if you agree that Israel have a right to defend themselves by killing 1000s and 1000s of Palestinian citizens, then you must also agree that Hamas had a right to kill 900 civilians to protect Palestinians that Israel has been murdering all year long

This was your full quote. These two actions are not comparable. I am not saying I agree with it, but I imagine the Israeli government’s aim is to exact a response so overwhelming that no-one dares to attack them like this again. Whether or that that is likely to work, or have the opposite effect, is debateable. And people can argue till the cows come home about the morality of it and what a ‘proportional’ response would have been ( what Israel should have done is noticeably absent from these discussions, probably because that is very difficult to answer). But one can still see, even if one vehemently disagrees with the tactics, that the ultimate goal of the Israeli government is to protect their citizens and their country long term through their current actions.

There is no such justification for Hamas. They are the de facto government of Gaza. Their murder,,rape and torture of Israeli citizens was manifestly not going to protect their citizens and was deliberately carried out with an appalling level of barbarity, and filmed and posted online to goad the Israeli government with, to bring down retribution from the Israeli government onto their own citizens, which Hamas now celebrate as ‘martyrdom’.

Personally I don't think any civillians should be killed or harmed in the name of 'protection' but I don't understand how the people who do think Israel has a right to do that can argue against Hamas killing civillians. Either killing civillians is wrong or it isn't. It shouldn't matter which side of the wall it is happening on.
