Continuing broad discussion of the release of detainees, hostages and prisoners and the agreements around this.

I came on here to see the discussion on those released but it seems a derailment prevented that from happening at all!

I thought this new thread would prevent that.

In the past I have noticed that it generally comes to light or more in focus when a Palestinian detainee goes on a hunger strike

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 08:12

@Reallifelurker I think with the Israel/Palestine conflict there are so many issues with such a long history that somethings just sort of get brushed under the carpet

The system used to trial Palestinians including minors in the occupied west bank certainly needs to be over hauled and at the least there should be the same system and processes used for both Israelis and Palestinians

Reallifelurker · 27/11/2023 08:07

Legally how does that work? He was in the ICU when the trial happened so no way for him to defend himself or even attempt to say his side of the story

It sounds like Israel views Palestinians as inherently criminal/guilty. Institutionalised racism.

What surprises me is that this isn’t challenged more. It’s like something Russia would do.

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 07:59

This was reported last night on the BBC about one of the 14 year old Palestinian boys who was freed yesterday

Al-Zaghal, said to be aged 14, was shot in the head and hit by shrapnel in the lower part of his body in August this year as he went out to buy bread, according to his uncle. Israeli authorities said he was trying to throw a petrol bomb at a settlement post in the area.
Al-Zaghal’s trial was held in absentia as he was still in intensive care at an Israeli hospital in west Jerusalem at the time.
He was seen today removing an electronic bracelet from his leg at the hospital where he’s receiving medical treatment.

Legally how does that work? He was in the ICU when the trial happened so no way for him to defend himself or even attempt to say his side of the story

Parkingt111 · 27/11/2023 07:56

@Reallifelurker thank you for that

“Administrative detention orders last for a period of 6 months but can be renewed indefinitely”

Hopefully they reach an agreement. It shouldn’t be a pause but a stop

I am hopeful that during the hostage transfer the plight of the Palestinian hostages is given more media coverage. Absolutely shocking the more I look in to it. The army are able to arrest and detain whomsoever they will without due process. How can this be left unchallenged?

stormy4319trevor · 27/11/2023 00:01

@Parkingt111 What a horrifying report. It's unbelievable to treat anyone like this, let alone children. I must go to bed, but I will see if there is a petition about this tomorrow.

Regarding Palestinian detainees and their treatment in prison

Posted today on the BBC
Earlier this year, Save the Children published new research that revealed that Palestinian children detained in the Israeli military detention system face physical and emotional abuse.
According to the humanitarian organization, 86% of them are beaten and 69% are strip-searched. Meanwhile, 42% are injured at the point of arrest including gunshot wounds and broken bones, the children’s rights organization reported.
It added that some children report sexual violence while others are “transferred to court or between detention centers in small cages”.

@Trulywonderful civilians are probably just focusing on staying alive and finding food and water. They are already being killed by Israel I doubt at this time they would want to risk being killed by Hamas too

The only way I see is if Qatar or Egypt negotiate with the PIJ or other groups directly if Hamas can't get through to them
But that would then involve Israel also having to come back to the table

There's alot we also probably don't know but hoping it does get resolved for the sake of everyone innocent involved

I mean over the next few months regarding the civilians reaching a tipping point. The terrorist groups are going to be a lot leaker and more disorganised by then. Owning a gun is sign of manhood in many places including Gaza. So the civilian population have guns too. My father of middle eastern origin used to have guns even here in the UK. He had a gun licence of course.

Anyway the current deal with hostage release is up to tomorrow. After that Israel will continue it only if Hamas find and hand over 10 hostages a day. That bit has already been agreed by Israel.

Can't remember how many prisoners Israel releases in return. I don't think the Qatar sheik said.

I like that six and nine POV thing.
Someone should pin it to the top of this boards topic list 🙃

Oh yes definitely

I have used it a few times on these boards

Trulywonderful · 26/11/2023 22:22

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 22:11

@Trulywonderful yes Israel is definitely not going to do that. It seems the PIJ seems to be an even more extreme version of Hamas if that's even possible

Always a more vile group waiting in the sidelines of these things. Happens wherever terrorists are controling an area.

Maybe civilian pressure will force Hamas and Co to negotiate even if some groups are not keen. I have seen a few videos online of Gazans calling out Hamas lately. Yes they hate Israel for bombing them but some definitely blame these terrorists groups for starting this escalation of the situation

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 22:05

So the truce right now is only between Hamas and the Israeli government
If PIJ and other groups are refusing to give up the hostages they have then what will happen?
As someone mentioned before in the past Hamas and PIJ have not always been friends and it seems they aren't happy with the terms of the truce Hamas has accepted as the PIJ want all palestinian detainees released

Interesting point

Qatar has only said Hamas is coordinator with the other groups. They haven't really mentioned details

Israel definitely is unlikely to release all prisoners. If they were willing to do that it would have happened at the start. Was it 6000 prisoners Hamas first ask to be released?

Nothing I have said isn't about what is available via media reports.

I would imagine BabaBarrio could say the same though. People interpret things differently and really we don’t know who’s got it right.

True

Parkingt111 · 26/11/2023 22:02

@Reallifelurker yes it's been mentioned in a few reports now that some hostages are held by the PIJ. How many I don't know. I also don't know if this has been verified although saying that how exactly can this be verified

I would think even if Hamas didn't know exactly how many with the names to the exact figure I would think they would atleast know the majority.
But I don't have much knowledge on how they operate so that's just my own speculation and I could be totally wrong

Trulywonderful · 26/11/2023 22:02

Reallifelurker · 26/11/2023 21:56

Also some of the hostages are held by PIJ and not Hamas

Well I’d never even heard of them. So are they the ones who have the hostages Hamas has been instructed to retrieve?

I found this but I can’t read it either. Still for anyone signed up to The Wall Street Journal

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/israel-hamas-war-gaza-strip-2023-11-21/card/palestinian-islamic-jihad-says-it-won-t-release-its-israeli-hostages-EZyNJwMid7qorXrI9dyz

Yes there are a few Jihad groups in Gaza like the Qatar article I posted spoke about

Hamas is coordinating with three other Jihad groups about the release of hostages according to Qatar.
