That's a top draw idea....

... it's done via martial law and closed military courts (if not administrative detention) and these are all sealed/cannot be made public unlike criminals prosecuted under a civic justice system. So all we really have are what human rights organisations have investigated and reported

Quite right, @MercanDede, but then I very much doubt the military courts prioritise sharing info with the various human rights people, so we're right back with speculation

True, although the human rights organisations, many of whom are Israeli lawyers do carry out their own investigations by interviewing eye witnesses, collecting evidence and so on. They don’t rely on what the military may or may not tell them or what the accused may or may not tell them.

But I will stop here. I think parking had a good suggestion to take this to another thread.

Reallifelurker · 26/11/2023 11:08

Ah, I see you've clarified this was aimed at me. May I suggest you re-read your post and see if you can spot the irony.

Lol, that doesn’t even mean anything.
Ok, ok, I’ll stop now

I think the reason people are discussing both here is because both are being released at the same time and generally the updates given on the news also update both together.
Just a suggestion maybe a different thread could be made to discuss the Palestinian detainees so as not to derail this one? Also BBC and other news outlets have been putting out stories of the detainees too and some of the background behind their arrests so maybe more appropriate to discuss on a new thread
Just a suggestion

I think it’s a good suggestion to keep this thread to the hostages taken by Hamas.

Based on what you said, she was bang on.

Making sweeping generalisations and negative assumptions about a group of people based on their ethnic background and religion. What would you call it?

No, she was not correct when she made accusations of Islamaphobia.

My above post was meat to quote this.

Yes, I forgot I hate the Irish as well 🙄

I dunno why you’re eye rolling when you haven’t actually refuted anything she said.

24 out of the 39 did not know why they were being held, were not charged and no legal process was followed, according to CNN. This is why I would not call them all 'prisoners', since no law was followed. I would not call them hostages, either - abductees, perhaps? but prisoner is inaccurate for over half of them. The others may have been prisoners in the legal sense.

The technical term for them is detainee or political prisoner. They aren’t technically hostages as there is no intent by those taking them into custody to use them as bargaining chips or ransom them for concessions. I agree they are not convicts which is the type of prisoner we are most used to in Europe. We don’t tend to have prisoners that are not either awaiting trial after arrest or serving a sentence after conviction of a crime.

Is this the gentleman that was told his daughter was dead then alive and was campaigning for her release?

Yes, Thomas and Emily Hand.

@Iwantcakeeveryday agreed. I saw the footage this morning of Emily hand and her dad being reunited. It was so moving.

Do you think the other children might be released today? Particularly the babies?

I would hope so but I just find it horrific to take them and keep them this long in the first place. babies! without their parents. It's just hideous.
I did see some photos of one of the released children on a bus and I just feel it's wrong to show us those. I don't need to see photos of them when they've just left and are clearly going to be traumatised. I feel everyone should respect their privacy.

Assuming it’s ok to mistreat children because they are just mini terrorists anyway has a slight hint of prejudice about it.

Absolutely - but then we'd need to know full information about their detention and I'm not sure that would be easy to find (and probably wouldn't be accepted by some even if it was)

You can’t really because it’s done via martial law and closed military courts (if not administrative detention) and these are all sealed/cannot be made public unlike criminals prosecuted under a civic justice system. That poster was simply addressing what you actually said, and she's 100% right.

You're justifying the detention and mistreatment of children, on the off chance that they might one day become suicide bombers? Can you actually hear yourself?

No, she was not correct when she made accusations of Islamaphobia.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 26/11/2023 10:48

Can we please keep this thread to its focus? I think some posters are being incredibly rude to raise other issues not related to the hostages. There are plenty of threads, post it somewhere else.

DirectionToPerfection · 26/11/2023 10:47

Cashncarry68 · 26/11/2023 10:29

Oh please quit with the emotive language and accusations. Do you know the background events to those children being detained?

Except they aren’t facts, fun or otherwise, many of the female and child Palestinian prisoners being released were held under administrative detention. Which is a special human rights violating power whereby the military can arrest and detain anyone for an indefinite period. They are never charged, they never had a trial, their guilt was never proven and yet they have been held for months or years in prison. Several cases, they did stand trial in a military court and despite being found innocent of the charges, were still sentenced to several years in prison on suspicion of guilt by association.

24 out of the 39 did not know why they were being held, were not charged and no legal process was followed, according to CNN. This is why I would not call them all 'prisoners', since no law was followed. I would not call them hostages, either - abductees, perhaps? but prisoner is inaccurate for over half of them. Do you know why he was throwing stones at the tank?

From Wikipedia

“Odeh's 17-year-old cousin Shadi, a Palestinian policeman, was killed during a confrontation with Israeli troops on 1 November. "When that happened, Faris said, 'I swear I'll avenge his death,'" Anam Odeh told the Post. "He went to Shadi's funeral wreath and placed a snapshot of himself in it. He said the wreath would be for him, too."

Later, Odeh was reportedly at the front of a group of young Palestinians throwing rocks at Israeli troops at the Karni crossing, when Israeli soldiers opened fire. His friends say that as Odeh crouched to pick up a stone, he was hit in the neck and that because he was so close to an Israeli tank that they had to wait an hour before they felt it was safe to remove his body and load it into an ambulance. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital”
