He was elevated to the House of Lords as a life peer in 2020. Hence Lord title. It's not very well-known but PMs can choose ministers from the House of Lords!

Being allowed constitutionally doesn't make it ok.

I am also in favour of a second House as a check and balance (although I would like it to be made up of a more representative sample).

But shoehorning unelected people into the top tiers of the Government is completely unacceptable. I think this 'rule' needs changing...

I am happy Suella and her evilness has gone though.

I've learnt something this morning. Member of the House of Lords can be cabinet members. I don't think this is acceptable, we don't elect them. I do think there is some merit to an unelected second chamber but only to provide checks and balances to the elected chamber.

I'm glad SB has been sacked. I'm not usually in favour of cabinet members being sacked for saying unpopular or controversial things but her recent statements about the protest on Saturday were deliberately inflammatory and that is unacceptable behaviour for a government minister.

How does Cameron become a minister if he's not an MP?
You may wonder how it's possible for David Cameron to become a secretary of state.

In short, he'd have to be sworn into the House of Lords - the upper house of the UK Parliament - as a matter of urgency.

A former prime minister has re-entered government before.

Alec Douglas-Home - Conservative PM from 1963 to 1964 - came back as Ted Heath's foreign secretary, serving from 1970 to 1974.

He, though, was an MP when returning to government.

Thats so true @Ohlalalalala . Almost every politician has seen whats been going on in Gaza and wondering 'but how does this play out for me?'. Its just despicable. I always wondered how the nazis managed to kill millions of people and no one stopped them. I can understand it more now. People at the top are at the top as they are naturally self serving. In other words they aren't nice people. And they always do what suits them first.

I am British and I am concerned about this as well. It should NOT be possible for an unelected person to be in Government. Even one who was previously elected. I agree that this is the opposite of democracy and I am VERY angry.

Just mentioning that our politicians follow whatever America does and apparently they're getting increasingly mad with Netanyahu and the optics of the images coming out of Gaza and the effects on their election potential. USA may be preparing to tell Israel no.

It's too little too late; Gaza is destroyed and we all witnessed a genocide.

The hypocritical "leaders" are just concerned about the optics as you put it. They don't think in terms of morality and sanctity of human life but in terms of election and vote and if the thousands being murdered daily impacts negatively or not on their political advancement. Disgusting.
