I didn't think that Biden 'gave Netanyahu carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to'. I think I heard him say that he supports Israel's right to exist and to defend itself, but that retaliation in rage was something to think twice about, because it hadn't worked well after 9/11.

Mearsheimer is essentially a good egg, he opposed the 2nd Iraq war and stopped getting invited to be interviewed by the MSM, as he refused to beat the war drum.

There was virtually zero trouble during the protests , so looks like you and your friend Suella got it completely wrong.

Johnson and Truss feeling important on Sunday. Surely there is a way to dissolve that Truss was PM to stop her appearing again and to stop her getting the payments.

I don't know why Truss turns up to these things, she must surely be aware that she's only embarrassing herself. The whole country is going "WTF is she doing there?".

It's these sorts of comments that maje me question unionism. The part I come from is very British, nobody's really interested in leaving the union. But, from a pragmatic point of view, that might begin to change. Now that Ireland is a prosperous, secular state, being run by people who can find Ulster on a map begins to look more appealing!

I think the Sinn Fein spokesperson summed it up rather well when they said something along the lines of Braverman was demonstrating that she knew as much about Northern Ireland as she does about Palestine.

Braverman did though achieve the remarkable trick of uniting all the parties in NI in being utterly baffled by her comments.

On that I watched a wonderful discussion with Professor John Mearsheimer (an American political scientist and international relations scholar who belongs to the realist school of thought) the other day about this conflict and other conflicts. Some highlights below:

• The first 10 minutes is about the US China detente (relations have been strained since Bidens inauguration) and how it signals the acknowledgement by America that it can't fight wars on 3 fronts, Ukraine, Gaza and Taiwan.

• What was needed from the US was to cool them down, instead Biden ran over to Israel and gave Netanyahu carte blanch to act in any way he wanted.

• Mearsheimer knows many strong supporters of Israel who are currently deeply depressed as they know Israel can't defeat Hamas in a short time and public opinion will change.

• Need a political solution, but impossible to see.

• Mearsheimer at 30 mins: before October 7th Israel was effectively an apartheid state. In Israeli media it is common to call it apartheid, only controversial to say that
  In Western countries.
  Problem is since Oct 7th that fact has become common knowledge and Israel isn't able to manage the image anymore. Turning the Israeli world upside down.

• The world now sees the problem and will be looking for a solution meaning no return to the status quo. Once you start talking about how to solve it the issue of Apartheid and occupation comes to the fore causing enormous problems for the Israelis.

• How are different countries going to react? US, Russia, China, EU etc. Aka will the US continue to get away with feigning negotiations by offering the Palestinians crappy deals or will the BRICS nations force a framework for actual effective negotiations.

• The last 40 mins the talk changes to Ukraine and the state of that conflict. Mearsheimer was prescient in a lecture he gave in 2015 where he cautioned that “the West is leading Ukraine down the primrose path, and the end result is that Ukraine is going to get wrecked.”

@Circularargument not sure if notsoready4school has replied, about her post saying she was expecting something to happen on her lifetime, with tears in her eyes.

I think I get what she was meaning. She was referring to a PP comment on how the opinion in UK and many other Western countries is pro cease fire and peace within the public, and it is showing on their government representatives recent speeches.
I think notsoready4school has hope that a peaceful resolution to the conflict will happen soon and both Palestine and Israel can live in peace. Which is the very ideal resolution to this problem. She still has faith.
I have to confess that I have lost my faith long ago, after thinking many times along the lines "oh, maybe this time it will be the last one, they will settle in a peace agreement" since I have memory and I can remember the very same thing is happening today, going on when I was 8! But time and time again, they go back to violence and massive numbers of deaths :(

I was confused by the marching comments. Which marches in Northern Ireland was she referring to? Early on in the conflict there were marches on the loyalist side of paramilitary organisations that were at first allowed, but later banned when they got involved in terrorism. The Orange Order do love to march, and are very sectarian, however most lodges would chuck anybody out who was overtly supporting terrorism - that's not what they're about.

I found it ridiculous that out of all the MPs on the Tory benches Sunak couldn't find 1 to do the job of foreign secretary. What does that say about the state of the Tories.
And the fact that he has had to make Cameron, who until recently, was classed as the worst PM on record. It's made a mockery of democracy.
Not a Tory but he would have been better bringing Teresa May back.

We are emulating the USA now. Lots of American politicians have never seen a public vote. Take Blinken for example, he’s served as Secretary of State and national security advisor for several presidents and yet never been elected.

id agree if the general public studyed the various politicans and their policies with as much detail as people that eg, study football results, vote on dancing on ice, vote and watch big brother, ect

point is, yes give the public the vote and have direct representation but at least fully be knowledgeable about who and why your voting for.

My point is that we shouldn’t have to deploy a thousand police every Saturday to man protests. There would be adequate police on the streets of London on a Saturday if they weren’t forced to pull police away from other stuff like, you know, burglaries, rapes, knife crime etc etc, to babysit protestors.

Rishi was weak to put her in his cabinet, literally days after she was forced to resign for breaking the rules.

She might claim to be a Conservative, but she doesn't really understand what Conservatism is about. She has only ever been in it to climb the greasy pole.

That’s the point. They are not ‘managing’ the protests. Their way of dealing with it, is by not dealing with it. There have been incidences that have been completely ignored - shouts of jihad, anti-Semitic chants, inappropriate banners, poppy sellers being intimidated. Anti Semitic attacks have increased massively in London on the back of these protests. The reality is that police can’t safely intervene in these incidences due to sheer numbers. And I’m not going to even reference Robinson and his gang - they’re irrelevant, and by people and the media giving them any publicity and coverage, that’s exactly what they’re looking for.
