The cenotaph and poppy sellers

Hi, would anyone mind explaining to me why the media seems to be portraying that remembrance commemorations are being targeted by pro-palestinian protests? I don't really know enough to know how the two things are linked.

That description of the footage of the poppy sellers at the station is misleading.

They weren't surrounded - most of the people in shot are just standing round in exactly the way people do on that concourse every single day. It looks low to averagely busy. There are couple of people wandering round with flags, as well as many who don't. Probably they are all waiting for theit trains, or to meet people off a train.

The reason there is no poppy stand on 11 Nov is that they all close up - it's surprisingly hard to find a poppy to buy on the day.

I suspect this is footage from one of the previous Saturdays, and that it was used by far right sites to encourage the EDL to turn up.

Don't worry, he just says that Hitler had the right idea slaughtering Zionists. I've been assured many times on here that when people say Zionists they don't actually mean Jews.

You know what, you’re right. That’s a really fair point, actually.

I’ve seen it said many times on here that people can’t say anything about Zionists without being accused of antisemitsm. This is good example of that.

If that's not a Far Right viewpoint. I don't know what is.

If you go far enough left you end up right (and vice versa). The far left and the far right are all thugs.

Yes, agreed.

I just don’t think this is an isolated viewpoint and I find it rather frightening.

And no one around him seems particularly bothered about what he's saying.

I hope he gets arrested.

No one seemed bothered either about the girl laughing at the Holocaust on Buchanan Street either. I never thought I’d ever see anything like that on the streets of Glasgow in my lifetime.

If that's not a Far Right viewpoint. I don't know what is.

Since the demonstrations began I’ve seen swastikas, antisemitic placards, people making taunts about the holocaust - all in the U.K. It’s certainly not all demonstrators, but it is enough of them.

Tommy Robinson and the idiots who showed up today are the old “far right”.

This is the new far right. And no one wants to discuss it.

It’s all gross. The far right racism. The antisemitism. And then when it appears on twitter, having to read even more racism and antisemitism in comments below. What the hell is wrong with people.

Whilst the march could have had ‘worse’ consequences today, it’s so damn depressing to read about the extremists of all persuasions who tagged along. And the other people online who support them.

I despair at these 'pro Palestinian' marches. They seem to be anti establishment marches populated by the same sad sacks who used to sell Socialist Worker on University Avenue in Glasgow in the 1970s

Indeed. Also these…

BethDuttonsTwin · 11/11/2023 22:40

Tommys little army split up and tried several times to get to the main march in smaller groups from several locations which the Met largely prevented to their credit (that's not something I say often).

Yes, the preventative arrests, as I said. Though I also read that “Tommy” skipped off in a taxi early doors leaving the riled up mini mob when he went.

Heres another thread where the police are asking for help identifying “peaceful protestors”. Doesn’t appear to be any Far Right on there, maybe because they were shut down and moved efficiently and quite rightly. My point was why such an intense focus on a quickly neutralised situation? Posts galore all over MN and other SM lamenting the behaviour of the Far Right protestors, with nary a mention from many of you, of the disgusting racist/violent/intimidating/anti-Semitic behaviours of multiple members of the “peaceful protestors”. The truth is that these incidents were always going to happen, because many of them were not there for peaceful reasons at all and they have nothing whatsoever to do with the small numbers of Far Right. The dishonesty and bias in this discussion is laughable and I don’t know how people can stand to not be properly informed and truthful about what is going on. I find it baffling.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 11/11/2023 22:35

The OP, which seems to have been hugely digressed from, was asking about remembrance commemorations/pro Palestinian protests. I responded saying that holding a huge March through London on Armistice day could be viewed as disrespectful.
From this, various posters have quoted me as supporting Suella Braverman/EDL, stating that poppy sellers have been attacked, and now that no one should be going about their daily business. None of which Is true but says a lot about how quick others are to twist the truth to suit them.

You do you. No one is going to bat an eyelid at anyone holding a kids party, but it's disingenuous to suggest it's on a par with half a million matching through London.

Ecdysiast · 11/11/2023 22:07

MissAtomicBomb1 · 11/11/2023 19:03

As I've said in previous posts, today should have been a respectful day of remembrance for the fallen in the WWs.

Instead the focus has been on the marches and the mindless racists who have tried to cause trouble. No need. The focus today should have been purely on the armistice events. It's one weekend a year

You can hand wring all you want but it was disrespectful to hold a march today. Any idiot could have foreseen that there would be trouble because the poppy is a dog whistle to a certain type of racist. My grandparents fought against antisemites & right wing Nazis, they shouldn't have been given the oxygen of publicity today.

@MissAtomicBomb1
I attended a child's birthday party today, Armistice Day. It was from 9:30-11:30. Do you think it was disrespectful of the hosts to have the party today?

Just asking because the whole class was invited, and none of the other parents seemed the least bit bothered by it (nor was I). No 2 minutes of silence was observed either.

Ecdysiast · 11/11/2023 21:55

Ibizafun · 11/11/2023 17:32

Would somebody mind explaining to me why the same numbers weren't marching in the UK when Russia invaded Ukraine?

@Ibizafun Um, maybe that's because the UK government was openly supporting Ukraine? A very different position to the one it's taking on Israel's decimation of Gaza.

Protesters wearing scarfs and Hamas headbands.

But no they're "peaceful", no "hate" here and the biggest problem here was a load knuckleheads, 10 hours ago, who were prevented from going to the cenotaph, had their bullshit shut down swiftly and efficiently and we never heard another word out of them. I am also reading that the majority of the 82 arrests were preventative arrests to get them out of the area and they've now all been released. I'll keep looking to confirm that though.

Further to my last, I've just seen there were over 100 arrests of those on the Palestine march today

(much smaller proportion then the EDL numbers were of their total number, but still deplorable)

And there were 308 arrests made at Notting Hill Carnival this year. Just for reference.

I'd prefer not to have linked to this X account but funnily enough, no other more palatable commentator seems to be shown it. Almost like it doesn't fit the narrative.

Yes horrible

It's not part of the march - it's back near Buckingham Palace a few hours after the march had ended.

(But I expect those caught on camera had been part of the march earlier).

And yes, that there are those who act like utter shits does "fit the narrative" and it's important to identify, arrest and idc prosecute those who break the law. Which also includes those who support Hamas, a proscribed organisation.

But that number (estimated around 150?) needs too be put in the context of 300,000+

MissAtomicBomb1 · 11/11/2023 20:43

@MCOut Yes, however London is the capital city of England and is of political and cultural significance to the nation as a whole. It is home to the cenotaph and the field of remembrance which are national monuments. It does not belong purely to the people who live there.

I’m not suggesting Remembrance events should not take place in London. Equally no one should prevent those who want to pay their respects from doing so. However, I’m arguing the expectation that everybody else should prioritise the observance of a culturally specific event is unreasonable. It’s unreasonable before you even consider the atrocities the march was calling attention to. It is not disrespectful to not partake in what does not concern you.

ScribblingPixie · 11/11/2023 21:07

From The Times: Michael Gove, the communities secretary, had to be bundled into a police van for his own safety after he was confronted by dozens of pro-Palestine activists while walking through Victoria station in central London.

BethDuttonsTwin · 11/11/2023 20:46

Accounts on what happened re Gove vary (only one tabloid says there was violence, police were there and I do think it'll be properly investigated.
