What should the Israeli government do?

I thought I'd start this thread to explicitly ask the question. What should the Israeli government do?

I honestly don't know. I appreciate that Israel was attacked on October 7, and that they need to respond. I'm sure everyone wants peace, but what can Israel do?

@MrTiddlesTheCat the safe corridor would absolutely need to be handled with international support and aid, so that they literally have a place to go for food and medical care that is not a warzone. I am not suggesting any type of forced removal but literally a safe place for them as an option that is away from the terror that is now in Gaza, and until it is safe for them to return (which should be as soon as possible). This could be run by the UN as a refugee camp until it is safe. Location wise it could be in Israel or Egypt but neutral international support and care would be paramount. I am only trying to think of ways to limit the horrible death and suffering.

There are already UN refugee camps. Clearly that's not a solution.

WarmWinterSun · 07/11/2023 10:54

@Oliotya where did I suggest the indiscriminate killing of men? Of course that would be terrible. If a safe corridor was opened up for all Palestinians to leave Gaza, would Hamas fighters stay or also leave through the corridor and then plot attacks from within the camps? I genuinely don’t know. I am really open to ideas about how Hamas can be stopped while limiting the death of innocent people.

No of course that’s not what I said. Israel should create a safe corridor for women, children and the elderly but then it will have to fight the war that needs to be fought against Hamas. I am very much not advocating genocide or killing anyone! This is, I’m afraid, a war now but harm to the vulnerable must absolutely be limited as far as possible in accordance with international law.

All men do not become legitimate targets in war. That's not how it works. Just as being female or old doesn't automatically make you innocent. International law doesn't allow for indiscriminate killing of men, women or children.

No, not advocating genocide at all.m, or killing innocent people. Far from it. I’m advocating creating a safe corridor for the vulnerable before Israel engages on the ground with Hamas, to get them to safety. It’s not perfect. I don’t know how else death and suffering could be limited while also stopping Hamas. I am not the world expert on this and am open to other ideas in line with this thread, which is about what Israel ought to do.”

You mean “safe corridors” like the roads people were told to use to move to escape the bombing, The roads which were then bombed, killing refugees trying to escape.

Israel must create a safe corridor for all women, children and the elderly. Then enter Gaza on the ground and destroy Hamas. Innocent Palestinian men will die but I don’t see another way.

Safe corridor to where?

You’re seriously advocating genocide? That’s been tried before and all right minded people railed against it.
Why is it ok in Palestine?

@EasterIssland

I realise it’s awful. I don’t see another way to stop Hamas which is intent and armed to carry out the eradication of all Jews. I hope there is a better way but I don’t see another answer. Calling for a ceasefire is hollow when Hamas has no intention of stopping or returning the civilians it kidnapped.

pro Israel people keep saying that ceasefire means making hamas stronger and you can’t see any other way. Well im glad UN can see another way as they’re calling for a ceasefire

btw men are also important to for the world , without a man you’d not be here so stop supporting killing men as if we didn’t need them in this world.

there are also women within hamas , shall we kill all women then rather than let them escape ?

ssd · 07/11/2023 10:35

Jesus kill the men!!! Thats a great solution Hmm

So basically kill all the men? Kill off the Palestinian blood line. That’s genocide.

Respect international humanitarian law.

What do we do when the breakers of those international laws are not permitted to be criticised?
**
Therein lies the problem.

Exactly this.

EasterIssland · 07/11/2023 10:18

I thought this was about releasing the hostages , but as many have said this war is really about power and nothing to do with hostages

TheABC · 07/11/2023 10:17

@piddocktrumperiness, your optimism made me smile. Full freedom and rights under a secular state would indeed be the dream. Perhaps in our children's lifetime - there's too much anger, pain racism and hate to process for it to be realised in ours.

I agree with you on the settlement expansion and mildly disagree with you on using Lebanon as a governance model - it's a failed state, rife with corruption, in part because of the sclerotic power sharing framework. We're seeing a similar problem with DUP and the Northern Ireland Executive, right now.

Oh well let’s kill innocent men we don’t need them at the end of the day. Shit happens you should have chosen to be a woman 🤔

I agree: Israel in charge of Gaza will be a disaster. Afghanistan x1000.

This is a case where an international peacekeeping force that acts as a buffer between the two might be the least of all evils. I don't know who will step up, though.

Netanyahu is deranged
He wants to send more Israeli soldiers after the war to look over Gaza
And how does he think these soldiers who will now 100% be seen as aggresive occupiers be treated there?
Its almost like he is instigating a whole new round of violence

And I am saying Israel isn't 100% a victim and to stop pretending the Palestinians are. We are saying the same thing but about the other side. Yet when I'm saying it I get accused of excusing illegal settlers despite saying several times that I don't support them

OK fair enough
And I did agree with your other points about a two state solution
Although what Netanyahu said today is being called out Israel planning a sort of occupation of Gaza again after the war
I think this is a recipe for disaster for both Israel and palestine

This is how I feel. It feels like Israel will never just own up to their wrongdoings. There is always a but. Peace will never come while Israel won't accept that they are not 100% the victim in everything.

Humdingerydoo · 07/11/2023 09:51

@Parkingt111
I'm not excusing illegal settlers, I don't agree with them. I still think it's a chicken and egg situation though as I remember well all the attacks that used to happen in Israel by people from the West Bank. The countless suicide bombers, stabbers, shooters. I remember my cousin going clubbing and almost being blown up. She survived, her friends didn't. Israelis haven't yet forgotten the existential threat coming from the West Bank for so many years

OuiOuiKitty · 07/11/2023 09:48

EasterIssland · 07/11/2023 09:46

I just saw this and I don’t agree with it. It should be an independent agency taking care of the security and not them. They should be two independent countries

I agree. Israel have caused so much trauma there. I can't imagine how they should be allowed to continue what is a military occupation. Life is only going to get worse and worse for Palestinians under those circumstances and everyone will get more and more unhappy until boom! It all kicks off again.
