and in my opinion it's a direct result of people turning a blind eye to and excusing the horror of hamas and everything they stand for. It's allowed open season on anti Jewish hate. This has happened TODAY in France.

In Saudi Arabia… the post was talking about in Western Europe. I’m not saying that it doesn’t exist, but this person is going on as though we all encounter Islamic extremism from the Muslims we meet day to day. In my experience, this is just not true.

I have encountered it, I used to think they were sad individuals not representative of a wider world view, now I would hope they were on watchlist.
There are some wicked manipulators targeting vulnerable people, we have to make connections to each other to feed our humanity and build cohesive communities.

TBF many other pro Palestinian marchers step in to defend him.

I am very much pro-Israel but yes, I have seen this on a number of different videos, not just this one, of things happening on the marches - other protesters stepping in.

regularmumnotacoolmum · 05/11/2023 10:59

@IClaudine thank you for sharing. I see a few things here. I see the person with the placard wanting a reaction as there is no other reason for doing what he did in the middle of a pro-Palestine protest. I also see a handful of people giving him a negative reaction and behaving in a shameful and aggressive manner whilst the majority of people ignore or restrain those causing trouble including reiterating that it's no place for violence.

Agree. It's so depressing. I can't stand to see how many people are marching in favour of Hamas. I don't get it.

You really should go to a march before you say these ridiculous things - the marchers are for peace and for Palestine i.e. against Israel's long-term apartheid policies for one. To confuse this with pro-Hamas is depressing indeed, if not wilful ignorance.

I for one can't stand to see every criticism of Israeli policy labelled antisemitism.

They presumably do not think they are on an anti semetic hate march.

I don't think the marches are hate marches or anti-Semitic in the main, but there is definitely an element of that present. I have also seen some anti-Semitic posts on Facebook. Posts from people like me who are fairly left wing, not right wing nutters. It is really depressing.

Antisemitism has always been rife in the UK and I’m so sorry that it’s getting worse. For those saying they haven’t seen it I wonder where you live and who you mix with. It may be that comments are indeed being heard but just not recognised as antisemitism.

I heard a university lecturer making antisemitic comments back in the 90s, also people commenting on an antisemitic manner on Jewish co workers in more recent years. I of course called this out.

Yesterday an academic posted on LinkedIn that her Jewish neighbour went this weekend to buy smarties with his 5 year old daughter at a supermarket in the UK. A man next to them in the queue slammed down his shopping, shouted out that he wouldn’t shop next to murderers and stormed out. Not one member of staff approached the victims of this verbal abuse.

There are many conflicts in the world, eg 377,000 (yes really) people in Yemen have been killed in the last few years, 15000 from direct military action by the Saudis (who our govt support). But no protests. Why are people only interested when civilians are killed by Jewish people and not by felliw Muslims?

A good point that no one seems willing or able to answer

I think this is appalling. This is so scary. This is disgusting what they are doing.. I can't believe how our governments are are not standing together. I was sat watching a TV programme called gbn.. The guy on there is from new reform.. Unlike our idiots MPs.. Conservative and labour.. He said we need to man up and all these people should have their visa, ect taken off them and sent home.. I'm so sorry your going through all this.. I worry for our grand children..

Sorry what? Who should have their visa taken away from them? 🤯 Are you of the view that anybody pro-Palestinian must be an immigrant?

I haven't seen the footage but if you have a link to it, I'm willing to watch. I can't speak for others beyond what I have heard and seen myself so will speak of my personal stance. Despite the fact that I condemn Hamas and some of the actions of Hamas, I would never go to a Pro-palestine protest and make a board about Hamas being terrorists as it feeds the media narrative of the reason Palestinians are going through this is BECAUSE of Hamas when that's untrue. Palestinians have been going through this for the last 75 years. The thing that has changed is the awareness surrounding the situation and how much of it we get to see.

I'm not in London ora big city so have only seen the marches second hand but none of their banners etc.seem to be asking for the hostages to be returned or condemn Hamas, they just look like anti-Israel. But have heard lots of Jewish people here and elsewhere expressing concern for Gazan people. And again not in London but it looks like Jewish schools and organisations and even individuals are needing security and not Muslim ones. I am extremely ashamed of this need to protect Jewish people who have nothing to do with Israel as a British person.

In terms of violent attacks statistically Muslims fare worse. Since 7/11 I think 6 Muslims have been stabbed to death which has been related to the conflict. It's interesting that any antisemitism discussion on here always brings out the Islamophobes.

regularmumnotacoolmum · 05/11/2023 10:45

@ScribblingPixie I think the other thing to note is that Hamas has already been publicly condemned as a terrorist organisation. Whereas the Israeli government who are committing crimes of a much greater scale are legitimised and supported. You don't expect to see placards around the U.K banning paedophillia, murder, rape or theft because those things are already illegal.

IClaudine · 05/11/2023 10:45

As usual, some people are keen to minimise and excuse anti-Semitism. It really is the oldest and most deeply ingrained hatred.

OppsUpsSide · 05/11/2023 10:42

There’s such little mention of the hostages in all these discussions.
Does anyone know why people tear down their posters in protest? What the significance of that is meant to be?

ScribblingPixie · 05/11/2023 09:20

I hear pro-Palestinians condemning Hamas all the time

Have you seen the video of the Iranian man carrying a placard saying 'Hamas are terrorists' at the march getting attacked? His criticism didn't seem to go down well.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 05/11/2023 10:38

@Lamelie Anyone excusing the attacks should rightly be called out and I do. There is simply no excuse to kill innocent people for political ideologies. I've only seen the recent attacks being discussed in the broader context of Israel's government policies, settler expansion and IDF treatment of Palestinian people/children in Gaza and the West Bank. I wouldn't say it is Anti Semetic to discuss these issues as a contributory factor in Hamas terrorism. Many Jewish Israelis also recognise that these are contributing factors to radicalisation and terrorism in the region. This discussion shouldn't be silenced or censored, even if it is uncomfortable to hear, as otherwise it buries the issues and the cycle of violence continues.

Lamelie · 05/11/2023 10:17

ItsRainingTacos79 · 05/11/2023 10:13

@Lamelie Surely all acts of terrorism need to be unpicked to understand why they happened.

No. There’s understanding the context v excusing.

@MCOut

Never in my life have I met a Muslim who is anti-Christian

This thread is about anti-Senitism not anti-Christian sentiment.

You cannot even see what I’m responding to 🙄 but yes, the next time somebody pops up both a racist and islamophobic comment suggesting that anti-christian and antisemitic sentiment is going on equally when that’s obviously not the case, I’ll let that stand.

Rehab4rightmove · 05/11/2023 09:28

@Cropcycle I'm so sorry you feel unsafe. It should not be the case.

Reallifelurker · 05/11/2023 00:10

Sadly I've seen so many posters on MN in all but using exact words to excuse what hamas has done. They 'whatabout' instead of calling it out as a henious and terrorist act

Could you explain what these “whatabouts” that amount to excusing/supporting Hamas tend to consist of?

There’s a narrative that blathers about the context of the 7 October attacks. It’s intellectually flabby and antisemitic in consequence rather than intent but still needs calling out.

AbsoluteYawns · 05/11/2023 07:20

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard I've not seen one single placard calling out Hamas on the marches. It's chilling how there are no chants to free the Gazan people from their bloodthirsty leadership. It's ALL about Israel and Jewish people.

That's what I think leads to the anti semetism and this shocking evil stabbing in France. It really feels like the left dont care about Jews. It's felt like that for a long time here. Its a real time recreation of Germany in the 1930s. People feeling emboldened to release their hate therefore allowing others to feed off that and commit such acts.

The evil person who committed the assault in France wanted people to know why they did it. So much so they stopped to graffiti the woman's door. It's just so horrifying...and still so many will say there isn't any anti semetism as a result of the war.

I've never been to a single march/protest/vigil where it's all about Jewish people. In fact the only time Jewish people have even been mentioned is by actual Jewish people who are speaking. It's only the Jewish posters on here, who don't seem to have even attended any of said events, who insist this is all about Jewish people.

No idea what @Teentaxidriver said but every religion/ideology has some extremists. Just yesterday an Arab muslim student was targeted in a hit and run at Stanford University. In the U.K Jo Cox was murdered due to a an extremist with right wing views. Earlier in October a 6 year old muslim child was brutally murdered after having been stabbed 26 times simply for being muslim. None of these attacks including the one that happened yesterday in Lyon are ok. The genocide and ethnic cleansing of an entire population is also not ok. I hear pro-Palestinians condemning Hamas all the time but I don't hear as many Jewish people condemning the acts of the Israeli Government and its forces. I see mostly justification or words to the effect of we have no other choice.

I'm not in London ora big city so have only seen the marches second hand but none of their banners etc.seem to be asking for the hostages to be returned or condemn Hamas, they just look like anti-Israel.
