Conflict in the Middle East

Is anyone's mental health affected by simply reading about the horrors of October 7th

I keep reading details in the Daily Mail and I know journalists have been given a video of the atrocities but it is absolutely harrowing. I understand large broadcasters can not go into detail as the events were to shocking for a general audience and in reality I think even written descriptions are worse than any thing I have read or watched.

Has anyone felt some outlet to express disgust is helpful (as some sort of therapy)?

‘We’ how many usernames are you talking about

You can be as combative as you wish. Be as ridiculing as you wish.

Propaganda will always be called out.

@MNHQ, Do a fact check before you delete given you allow so much Israeli propagandist posts to stand.

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 16:30

@pLtt78 boo hoo.
I don't know how much evidence you want more than accounts from first responders, a suicide and various articles.
So anything other than ' I saw it with my own eyes' is propaganda?

TRIGGER

PLt78

I've seen it, it was a report from one of the first responders. Two witnesses are mentioned.

Where did you read this? Please link to your source if you're going to make these kind of statements on MN.

His name was Hsim Ben Aryeh. Scroll down through this article.

You are asking generally about sources, I assume? Not just about this?

Faces of Israel's fallen: Soldiers, a peace activist, a family of 5 and more - Jewish Telegraphic Agency

Just a few of the hundreds and hundreds killed in a spasm of violence, reflecting the rich tapestry of Israeli life.

My post that you replied to was written in response to the two following posts:

”It's made me feel so sad. I'm not Jewish but I hate, and I can never understand why, Jewish people are always blamed for everything and made to be scapegoats. I hate it so much.”

Then another poster replied:
“Thanks for your comments. It means a lot. The answer is easy though, many many many people hate Jews. That's the simple reason behind it.”

The only way my post would not make sense to you is if you did not actually bother to follow who I was initially replying to, and what the conversation was about.

You have instead made up your own origin of my post, and then twisted it to suit your meaning, which is, frankly, really quite odd, and it is in fact your own post that does not make sense.

I don’t want to engage with someone who can’t do the basics of following a thread, it is a waste of time, so thank you for your reply but I won’t be replying again in response.

It doesn't make sense. You are claiming that antisemitism is because of the actions of the Israeli government, and suggesting that anyone thinking otherwise doesn't see Palestinian lives as having equal value. Nothing about that makes any sense whatsoever.

Thanks @ProvincialLady1 - you're absolutely right about the non sequitur.

I saw it too. I think he was actually one of the drivers taking survivors away from the area.

@Milkandhoneybees you seem to really have a bee in your bonnet about my posts!

I replied to a different poster who asked why Jewish people are being scapegoated for the actions of the Israeli government. I gave my opinion on why that was. You went off on one and accused me of bias. I can't understand why, unless you're looking for an argument.

If you have an alternative theory of why some people are accusing Jews of being responsible for the actions of the Israeli government, perhaps you could say what your theory is and we could debate that, instead of misreading my post.

Milkandhoneybees · 03/11/2023 15:25

ProvincialLady1 · 03/11/2023 14:56

Thanks, but none of that means your previous post made sense. It was a nonsequiter really - someone says there are people who hate Jews and you say the only reason you could think that is if you don't value Palestinian lives. It's nonsense, and it doesn't help that you immediately associate being Jewish with the actions of Israel as well as making a seemingly blanket statement denying the problem of antisemitism.

I'm not Jewish btw, but thank you for the compliment. 😊

@Acornsoup than what?

Acornsoup · 03/11/2023 14:57

The horrors since then have been much much worse

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 14:56

'Atrocity propaganda' aka what actually happened in full graphic, painful detail that we don't to hear as we prefer the Israel bad/ Hamas misunderstood narrative.

With a smattering of.... I wasn't there. I never saw a dead baby. So did it really happen?

ProvincialLady1 · 03/11/2023 14:56

Milkandhoneybees · 03/11/2023 14:23

@thinkfast @ProvincialLady1 I absolutely have empathy for anti-Semitism. I present as white-ish, I have Jewish ancestry (although I don’t know much about who they were, but it was something I found out), multiple people (both Jewish and not Jewish) have assumed I’m Jewish. My two best friends are both Jewish. I was even abused by the parents of one of my friends at school for being Jewish, despite not being Jewish, simply because of how I look!

Even though I present as white-ish, as soon as I explain where my parents came from, and I am “outed” as a secret ethnic minority, I have been on the receiving end of everything from the classic “go back home” (thanks, but I was born here) to being told by a work colleague that my parents must “have a sob story of arriving here on a banana boat” - one of my parents is indeed a refugee, so that was a fun one to navigate.

My two best friends have been my best friends for 15+ years, and something that we first bonded over, time and again, is having to make self-deprecating jokes in order to feel somewhat accepted. Our experiences are very similar.

With all that being said, I am absolutely tired of this concept that all dissent against the Israeli government is as a result of anti-Semitic feelings that have had a chance to take hold.

I absolutely agree that there are racists amongst us, but to suggest that one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent history, with a disgustingly high death toll of kids and babies, is only being so vehemently criticised is because of latent anti-Semitism requires such cognitive dissonance that I truly find it hard to fathom. That’s without even mentioning the oppression, torture and routine killing and detention of Palestinian kids that came before this.

How can you justify their suffering in your head and call it legitimate?

A little 6 year old kid was stabbed to death for being Muslim in the States. His mum barely survived her wounds. The killer used to be their friend, but listened to a large amount of right-wing talk radio prior to killing a child; his neighbour. There have also been other Muslims killed and hate crimes against Muslims off the back of this. Muslim women who wear hijab are very clearly “marked” and are prime targets for this.

So this is happening to both Muslims and Jewish people. People must unite, rather than turning inwards to only their own community and living with fear. Only those in power will stand to benefit.

I am so sorry people have made you feel shit for being Jewish, but for the vast, vast majority of us, this isn’t that, and if/when those people pop up, we’ll all tell them to fuck off!

Thanks, but none of that means your previous post made sense. "7 Oct frightened me with a glimpse of just how depraved a bunch of psychopaths can be. "

It is horrific and terrifying but how callous and murderous governments can be terrifies me more.

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 14:53

@IAmtheVampiresWife now waiting for the 'whataboutery' and those that understand Hamas had been provoked whilst simultaneously adding they don't support them though.....

To answer the original question of this thread, yes 7 Oct is deeply traumatizing. It's made worse, though, by posts on MN, like this one, insinuating that it was just a bit of Israeli propaganda.

Oh, and the open celebration of 7 Oct in streets around the world? Utterly sickening. (Yet, weirdly, no one actually admits to supporting Hamas. It doesn't add up...)

7 Oct frightened me with a glimpse of just how depraved a bunch of psychopaths can be. The reactions since, including here on MN, have frightened me with a glimpse of just how vicious people are generally. There's a lot at stake here, and it's not just the future of Israel.

I agree with you. I have avoided much on this but posts like this are not good for the reasons you put.

You should avoid reading the DailyFail which, as @Hellers beautifully put it, "revel in the gory details to a disgusting degree", besides the fact that their "journalism" -if you can call it that- leaves a lot to be desired.

Look up "Atrocity Propaganda".

Last night I read the report about Hamas roasting a baby in an oven and the heating element being found stuck to the baby's body. I couldn't sleep for thinking about this. Why do Hamas have to be so evil? Killing by shooting or bombing is one thing but why individual atrocities like this and decapitating an unborn baby?
