Guardian journalists in 2014 encountered armed men inside one hospital, and sightings of senior Hamas leaders inside the Shifa hospital have been documented.
During the 2014 conflict the UN reported weapons were found inside two UN schools and there have been numerous reports of Palestinian armed factions in Gaza firing rockets and other weapons from close to protected civilian locations. It is also clear that Hamas has operated from residential buildings.
Making the issue more complicated, however, is the nature of Gaza and conflict there. As the territory consists mostly of an extremely dense urban environment, it is perhaps not surprising that Hamas operates in civilian areas.
International law also makes clear that even if an armed force is improperly using civilian objects to shield itself, its opponent is still required to protect civilians from disproportionate harm.

In my opinion, no. The problem is that no nation state whose citizens have been targeted in a horrific terrorist attack is going to have the self restraint to sit back and do nothing because those same terrorists are using their countrymen as shields. Even Hamas knew that, which is why they deliberately took Israeli hostages.

And yet a 2009 Amnesty report was unable to find evidence of this but did find evidence of the IDF using Palestinians as human shields against Hamas. The Israeli Supreme Court ruled it unlawful but testimony of former IDF soldiers suggests it still goes on.

There are approximately 25,000 members of Hamas (I looked and checked their membership & my work colleague is a ME Senior Research Fellow and is a trusted source who said he'd broadly agree with that figure). Are you telling me that on the very last killing of the 25,000th Hamas fighters Israel would immediately withdraw and stop their military campaign?

Think about it.

There is no military advantage to bombing a refugee camp is there? What military leader would kill refugees who pose no threat to them and leave Hamas alive to continue to fight them? Would you call that good military leadership? Those rockets cost £50,000 each.

There is, however, a military advantage in bombing senior Hamas commanders and wiping out their bases.

They can't bomb everywhere and claim Hamas is there.

A refugee camp is intended as a temporary accommodation. This refugee camp has been there since 1948. The great grandchildren of those who lost their homes in 1948 are classed as refugees though they, their parents and their parents parents have never been displaced. It’s a residential area.
