Hatred of the Jewish Community

I think the Simon Schama programme is 'The Story of the Jews'.
I can't find it on iPlayer although it was originally on BBC2.
It is available on BBC Select (which is US/Canadian markets only) or Prime (but I think you have to pay for it now).

I disagree. We had the leader of the Labour Party being openly anti-Semitic and he got to run in a General Election where everyone fell over themselves to defend his overt racism.

No defending Corbyn, but Boris Johnson got to be fucking PM despite all of his racist rants over the decades.

I think there might be some truth in the 'rich and powerful' theory. In the same way I think Americans can be the victim of racism and also the 'you can't be racist against Americans' argument.

I should add, I'm not saying anti-semitism should be treated as worse than racism against any other culture or religion. All of it is unacceptable. But I think there's a blind eye turned to a lot of.

And I'm not sure what other ethnic minority would be expected to tolerate people celebrating - celebrating - a massacre of their people in the streets as Jews have seen happen for the Jewish people killed in the Israeli terror arracks, who were murdered for being Jewish. Please note I mean this separate to the Free Palestine protests, I am not suggesting they are celebrating terror attacks, that is obviously not the same thing. But there have certainly been large numbers of people globally celebrating the death of Jews, and other people defending their right to publicly to do so. I don't think that would be tolerated for any other ethnic group in the same way.

When I saw the images of the police tearing down the posters of the missing Israeli children it reminded me that some of this is about numbers. Jewish people are always in the minority. There are a significant number of people who are vocally and violent hostile to Jews and an even bigger number of people who will appease those bullies for a quieter, safer life. There are the haters and there are the people who are willing to do shameful things to avoid the mob turning on them too.

I'm not Jewish. I have family members who have married into Jewish families and converted to Judaism and their families and friends are very special. I've spent a lot of time in Israel on holiday over the years and love it there. We've always felt safe, included and welcome, which is especially important for our gay son.

I'm in my sixties, so can remember the 'boycott Israel products' that was around for so many years. People refusing to buy Soda Stream machines because they were made in Israel

With the event of the internet the conspiracy theories against Jews really thrived. Illuminati, New World Order, and a whole new load of crap circulated.

I think a lot of people view Jewish families as successful, business owners so there's a strong vein of jealousy running through the prejudice. If Jewish people had very dark skins I think the horrible casual hatred would be more guarded tbh.

I don't know what the answer is. I know that I'm very protective of the Jewish community.

Ah, there are good Jews and bad Jews. Good Jews do not want a nation state that exists as the only country in the world where they can exist free from the persecution of the state and their fellow citizens. Only bad Jews want this.

Surveys I have read have shown that most Jews in the UK support the existence of Israel. This distinction between ' zionists' (bad) and jews (good) is artificial and bogus. The overlap between people who are jewish and who people who support Israel is obviously very high.

Calling some Jews 'zionists' and that legitimating your hatred of them ( as seen in the above post) just seems to be a way for people who like to consider themselves anti-racist to have hatred for a group of people who are of a particular race, and to feel ok about this.

I suspect the people who do this are the same people who talk incessantly about the need to 'understand' the 'context' for Hamas's atrocities, but never talk about understanding the context for why Jewish people want their own nation state.

DH certainly has, after a big argument some years ago, must have been something in the news, after which I did some research as hadn’t really looked into the history properly before, most of which he didn’t know. His family not so much but I don’t have a lot to do with them these days thankfully and we moved away from the community.

There was an article in the news yesterday about a Palestinian teen who was shot in Jerusalem by Israeli soldiers, very much in the vein that the Israelis were the aggressors and he was shot for no reason but halfway down as if it wasn’t really important, it was mentioned that the boy had reportedly stabbed an Israeli police officer. Obviously it is terrible that a teenage boy had lost his life but hello, he was running amok with a knife having already stabbed a police officer in a time of extreme tension. Were the Israelis supposed to let him carry on or wait to disarm him peacefully at the risk of more people being stabbed.

As a Muslim I have never once heard in my life that Muslims hate Jews because the prophet Ishaq become the favoured son (nor is there any reference in our scripture of one son being favoured over another
The prophets Ishaq and Isma'il may peace be upon them are both highly respected prophets amongst Muslims.

I have thought about this a lot. I think it tends to be the right of the right that can be islamaphobic and the left of the left that can be antisemitic.
The right have much more control of the media and government in the UK so get an easier ride for their hatred than the left.
Both are equally as abhorrent.

I'm curious too. I've also noticed that politicians get away with anti-Muslim comments, but not anti semitism. Why is anti semitism seen as worse - is this solely because of European history?

It’s a hatred almost as old as Cane and Abel. Muslims believe they are descended from Ishmael, Abraham’s first wife (the Torah and Bible say handmaiden). When Sarah became pregnant at an advanced age and gave birth to Abraham’s son, Isaac, he became the favoured son and the ancestor of the Jewish people. Ishmael and Hagar were cast into the desert, but ultimately saved by God. People who believe in the literal truths of these stories will have animosity.

I married into a Muslim community and used to be very shocked at the casual hatred of Jews, when challenged they could not give a coherent answer as to why they hated them. It was indoctrinated from childhood. Obviously a generalisation but also my experience.
