Im not as educated as some people. Can't understand why in this day and age
people should be at war. I'm not on anyone's side. I feel so sad for the innocent people in this conflict. I know it's a couldren in the middle east.
But how can Hamas and Iserael think what they are doing is right.

Can someone tell me why the Jews have been hated since the beginning of time.
Wandering the deserd according to the bible.
Even in Shakespeare think 'merchant of Venice'
Just in the modern times think 'Hitler' who tried to destroy them.
Last night somewhere in Russia a plane from Iserael was stormed and the mob wanted to kill the Jews on board.

No. The only thing that accounts for it is antisemitism. The actions of Israel do not make otherwise non-racist people suddenly turn into racists. They just give racists a trigger to act out their racism. The blame stays with the racist.

@Donkeyseason

I agree

I don't think the world was given sufficient time to absorb the sheer scale and barbarism if the events of October 7th.

To allow marches which in effect allowed anti Semitic sentiments would have added salt in a gaping wound

I think it is incumbent on governments to support their local Jewish communities given that part of the population has the right to march through London bearing placards that imply the destruction of the Jewish state or hyperbolic statements about Israel's actions.

It feels that it really is brave unfortunately to come out to support Jews and highlight anti semitism and that is concerning.

Added to all that, the march against antisemitism is now under scrutiny.
I suppose some can't just shout their
bigotry from the rooftops, so they
have to be underhanded about it.

One theme that's run through all these threads is the assertion that if you want the bombing of Palistine to stop, you don't care about (even support) the people murdered and kidnapped in Israel. And if you care about the people murdered and kidnapped in Israel you don't care/ think it's justified, about the bombing and killing of the people in Gaza.

I care about both!
I absolutly 100% supported the lighting up of public buildings with the Israeli flag/colours after 6/10. And would also 100% support 'stop the bombing' and a ceasefire and hostage release. For one, I think the bombing is counter productive, you can't bomb your way out of an ideology. Imagine you are a young man/teenager growning up in Gaza, you see all this death and destruction around you, it's not going to make you sympathic to the Israeli plight is it.

I am from Poland, a place where war and holocaust are still very fresh memories. noone would deny it happened, every family has a story to tell, every school child goes on trip to Auschwitz, a number of books and movies are coverd in curriculum, the getto walls and other monuments in Warsaw and Krakow are still there to remind us of what "people did to people" YET you wouldnt beleive how totally accepted jokes about Jews being stingy are, they are printed in papers, being called a Jew is an insult and anti semitism amongs polititians and regular people is not even hidden. I really dont understand.
the only reason I can think of as mentioned before is that before the war Jewish were the rich hence the stingy jokes I think, so simple jelousy. and now many people still beleive that Jewish money controls the world. the New World Order and all that.

Donkeyseason · 01/11/2023 08:41

I think a lot of posters are correct in that the Gaza conflict has given 'justification' for this that were already anti Semitic licence to be more vocal in their views under the guise of Palestinian support

I agree with this and I also think a lot of people, who would vehemently deny being anti-Semitic, have wholly absorbed an anti-Semitic worldview.

If after a massacre like October 7th, your reaction is to go on a march which completely ignores the recent brutal massacre of one race of people, completely ignore it as if it is, at best a side issue, if you ignore those victims of atrocity, then you have absorbed an anti-Semitic view that those Jewish people are so lesser, that you can ignore their torture, ignore their murder and ignore the pain the March will cause the traumatized and grieving community.

And, of course, you will know that the March includes those who explicitly have celebrated the murders of Jewish people.

If you chose to ignore the Jewish victims and March alongside those celebrating the murder of Jewish people, and you genuinely think that is a good thing to do, then yes, you have absorbed an anti-Semitic worldview.

Here is a list of famous Jews and what strikes me is how extensive the list is and how many of the figures I would not have instantly recognized as Jewish. Being a non Jew I wonder how many Jews in public do not discuss their culture of faith as well as not wearing obvious religious items? Is this because Jews have always recognised anti semitism as being omni present and take reasonable lengths to not hide their faith but not overly promote it out of fear?

Rachel Riley has given a moving account of the fear she feels being a Jewish woman for herself and family and it is galling for people to feel fundamentally unsafe due simply due to race in this country.

I think a lot of posters are correct in that the Gaza conflict has given 'justification' for this that were already anti Semitic licence to be more vocal in their views under the guise of Palestinian support.

I think it is also fair to comment that in the UK we have a larger Muslim population than Jewish and I think religion has become an elephant in the room with regard to anti semitism but needs to be discussed openly despite sensitivities. It has to be said that many that committed the October 7th atrocities had links to jihadi organisations and religion was a possible factor in their hatred of Jews. I am absolutely not saying all Muslims harbour anti Semitic thoughts but if we are to be serious about sources in the UK we need to acknowledge certain religions can fester anti semtism. Obviously historically anti semitism has been shown by all.races and creeds but currently there seems to be some hostility between Muslims and Jews (exacerbated by the middle east).

Famous Jews

The following is an alphabetical list of famous Jews. The people on the list are notable followers of Judaism (either from birth or following conversion) or people who professed a Jewish cultural identity. The list includes people who distinguished the...

The owner of the pharmacy shared a couple of tweets that referred to “filthy animals” and asking where is Iran now. Not at all clear whether the “filthy animals” were Jews, Israel or IDF, but a local campaign was started claiming the pharmacy owner had been posting anti semitic tweets specifically calling Jews various names and calling for the killing of Jews.

wow! This is like a master class in an anti-Semite defending anti-semitism.

Apparently calling Jews who are Israeli or Jews who are in the IDF ‘filthy animals’ is not anti-semitism.

I wish the anti-racist racists who use the term ‘Zionist’ to hide their race-based hate would have the honesty to use the term ‘Zionist Jews’ . But of course they won’t. Because then they would have to look into what they really meant.

A large group of Muslim people charging into an airport arriving from Tel Aviv at this point in time is quite obviously a reaction to what is happening in Gaza.

With a long history of both Muslim and Russian anti semitism behind it.

Donkeyseason · 01/11/2023 06:57

Itsjustagoogleaway · 31/10/2023 22:41

However the historical reasons for anti semitism don’t really account for
why there were problems with the flight from Tel Aviv arriving at the airport in Russia

That Is because of what Israel are doing to Palestinians in Gaza ……obviously!

is this a sarcastic ironic comment?
Because if not, it is a deeply ignorant and anti semitic comment.

Russia has a long history of violent anti semitism and Putin has recently been making anti semitic comments as part of his war against Ukraine ( apparently Zelensky is Jewish).

And that part of the Russia is predominantly Muslim and there is historically anti semitism there too.

Of course it is a 'reaction', but the reason they chose to react by attacking random Jews because they are Jews is the absolute definition of racism.Absolutely terrifying that you can't understand this. If the french government did something awful would you randomly attack a group of french students? Of course not.

I think a good way to gauge anti semitism.is to pin an Israeli flag.pin to your lapel or to overly.wear a star.of.David and see the reaction of people who you would come into contact with in day to at life.

mids2019 · 31/10/2023 23:29

One thing of present concern is anti semitism being shielded within some of the marches being held here in the UK. Though the majority of pro Palestine are perfectly peace abiding it cannot be denied that some are actively promoting anti Jewish views often in plain sight of police. It must be extremely concerning for Jews in this country to have to witness such virulent displays of hatred and think there may be a pull towards such views because of the present conflict.

Pro Palestinian views can morph into something a lot darker and ultimately hatred of Jews for some of these is no restraint. I actually feel there is an argument to limit such marches until it is assured that there is no anti Semitic voice within these crowds. If we do not do this as allow a public festering of anti Jewish feeling and there is somehow justification as it being conflated with public protest.

we also need to avoid hyperbole about the actions of Israel in this grim conflict. Israel is not ethnically cleansing Gaza or commiting genocide. Yes, unfortunately there are civilian deaths in a war of this nature but that is certainly.different to.deliberate and systematic targeting of civilians (as Hamas demosntrated). Using exaggerated language leads to the perception Israel and by extension Jews actively wish for the destruction of a population which is very much not the case.

The key word here is "reportedly". Every single Palestinian who is shot, tortured, sexually abused at the hands of Israel has "reportedly" committed a terrible crime. Believe me, if he'd stabbed a soldier he would gave been killed there and then, he wouldn't have had a chance to even turn around.
Just today a Palestinian man was shot in the back of the head by settlers whilst picking olives with his wife and children. She said they were sitting under the trees having lunch, settlers ran after them firing shots so they ran away. He was hit from behind and killed. This group of settlers said he was waving a gun around so they shot him in self defence. Unluckily for them, someone captured the whole thing on his mobile. The settlers literally arrived in a mob and started firing at this family. A lawyer said they will face no repercussions. Palestinians are always "reportedly" the "perpetrators".

lets not forget Palestinians who are stripped, tied up, burnt and sodomised by Israeli settlers.

Lets not forget………all with proof!

DH certainly has, after a big argument some years ago, must have been something in the news, after which I did some research as hadn’t really looked into the history properly before, most of which he didn’t know. His family not so much but I don’t have a lot to do with them these days thankfully and we moved away from the community.

There was an article in the news yesterday about a Palestinian teen who was shot in Jerusalem by Israeli soldiers, very much in the vein that the Israelis were the aggressors and he was shot for no reason but halfway down as if it wasn’t really important, it was mentioned that the boy had reportedly stabbed an Israeli police officer. Obviously it is terrible that a teenage boy had lost his life but hello, he was running amok with a knife having already stabbed a police officer in a time of extreme tension. Were the Israelis supposed to let him carry on or wait to disarm him peacefully at the risk of more people being stabbed.

This just sums it up really. Daily Mail article so don’t click if you don’t want to:

I disagree, antisemitism is seen as the worst.

You could be racist, disabilist and islamophobic and still keep your job.

Even on threads here, look how long a thread which is racist against black people gets to stand.

Newspapers can post racist stories and images and get away with it. See many racist cartoon portrayals and articles. Then see if someone will get away posting something antisemitic, they would get fired straight away.

Being called antisemitic is the biggest stain of someone's character and image after that its transphobia.

Are you joking?

No you’re right, there were some anti semitic events before Israel.

My family are Iraqi Muslims and they have always talked about what happened to the Jews in Iraq as being a real shame as the ordinary person had a normal relationship with them. Many Jews left Iraq very reluctantly. I also once dated an Iraqi Jew whose family left Iraq in the late 90s so there were definitely a handful who put it off as long as possible, but don’t think any are left since the invasion.

My in-laws left in the 1970s and they still speak fondly of their lives there :) They all worked for various Muslim family-owned companies and were treated like a party of the family. It was all very integrated (minus them not being allowed passports etc) but it simply got too dangerous for them so they left. Some of them weren't so lucky and were executed in the town square. Have you seen Remember Baghdad on Netflix? You and your family might find it interesting. I'm sure none of it will be new information to any of you, but might still be of interest!

Sorry, none of that was really relevant to the topic at hand, was it 😅 Just always nice to "meet" someone who knows a bit of what my family might have experienced!

Some Jews in Iraq stayed until the 1970s before they were forced out, yes. In fact, I met someone who didn't leave until the late 90s, which I found unusual! Others were forced out long before Israel was established. They were second class citizens all along, some just put up with it a lot longer than others. There were also events like the Fargud pogrom in 1941, so before Israel. Some of my family had already left before that though as it had been made clear to them they weren't welcome.
