I thought this was an interesting article about Gaza’s systems of tunnels which would help explain what the IDF are trying to get at.

There just seems no solution but the death toll has to stop. Am thankful I’m a pacifist and an atheist - best way.

Surely you don’t want to see another October 7th either

In that case there will need to be a way to ensure it doesn’t happen again

It can’t just be there’s no answer

The answer isn't what the IDF is doing.
As I said, if that's all Neyanyhau can come up with, he has somehow become even worse than I thought, and that is already lower than I thought humanly possible.
Surely you don't want to see yet more Palestinians killed either.

Parkingt111 · 04/11/2023 19:06

The US know that Israel do not want a ceasefire so instead are trying to push for humanitarian pauses
But this has also been rejected by Israel

EasternStandard · 04/11/2023 19:03

ChickHenLittle · 04/11/2023 18:59

So... Israelis should be afforded safety from atrocities but Palestinians have to suffer through it?
What warped logic. I think all civilians should be safe from any harm, but the amount of people who find the Israeli government response is astounding.

There's currently calls for a ceasefire by a group of protestors in Tel Aviv right now too

Parkingt111 · 04/11/2023 19:02

From what I have read it's been said a few times that Hamas will not release hostages until a ceasefire is agreed upon. With the Implication that they do want a ceasefire

Israel always has to stand up to her enemies because the enemies are unreasonable and you cannot and should not negotiate with terrorists.

The IRA accepted the terms of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998 as a negotiated end to the Northern Ireland conflict.

thanks god you weren’t in power of the government

They are not carpet bombing ffs. Look it up!! It would all be over if Israel were to 'carpet bomb'. How many times does this have to be pointed out.

No you aren't obliged to speak to me at all but, if you insist there must be a ceasefire now, knowing it will only be Israel that will honour it, then I think you do have an obligation to work out for yourself what the ramifications are and be honest about what it is you are calling for.

I think you’re the one that needs to look up carpet bombing.

Israel has bombed hospitals, schools, mosques and churches and UN facilities. It has bombed journalists (and their families), doctors, and more recently a horse and carriage. Perhaps the horse was standing over a Hamas tunnel though, who knows.

Ohdearanotheryear · 04/11/2023 18:56

@SharonEllis if a ceasefire was agreed by Israel and Hamas carried on firing missiles in then it would give Hamas time to regroup. Hezbollah being another terrorist group attacking Israel from Lebanon would also continue firing towards Israel as well.
Israel have terrorist groups both sides who want to eliminate them.
It's a shame that the terrorist groups don't consider their own people at all.

I’ve answered this numerous times before on other threads.

nothing will stop it happening again unless there is a just peace which takes into account the rights of Palestinians. So long as they are oppressed Israelis will not have long lasting security.

Israel’s strategy of “mowing the lawn” every few years by bombing the crap out of Gaza didn’t buy it security on October 7th. These current atrocities definitely won’t either.

can you respond to the question as to what will stop Israel killing Palestinians in the West Bank where there is no Hamas. 200 so far the last month alone. What will stop that happening again ?

Edited

Hamas have said they will not stop. Peace will not make them stop, so what then?

In answer to your question voters in Israel may well do that if they vote for a government with different aims

But that still doesn’t ensure safety from atrocities for women and children in Israel

What will stop it happening again?

flattening the entire Gaza Strip and starving 2.3 million people won’t stop further Hamas attacks on Israel. you can tell yourself that though if it helps you morally reconcile what Israel is doing so you sleep at night.

if Hamas’s underground tunnels were in Israel proper, the army wouldn’t be carpet bombing to try and destroy Hamas and keep Israel safe from further attacks.

ChickHenLittle · 04/11/2023 18:47

Why are you asking a MN poster what should be done? We aren't politicians. Perhaps a better question is why can Netanyahu think of no other solution than destroy Gaza and so many innocents? I'm more concerned someone in such a position of power can't or won't take any other action.

De escalation is important but the whole Hezbollah are ‘reasonable’ is too much. They’re still terrorists.

Given Hamas have said they will not stop what next for you

You don’t want another October 7th so how would you stop it happening?

Edited

Ok, to clarify, I did not say Hezbollah are reasonable. I said their call for a ceasefire - which is something desperately needed in my view for humanitarian purposes - is more reasonable than what we’ve seen from western governments lately which is a bizarre moment in history. There’s a difference.

I’m not “elevating” their views, but whether you like it or not the role they could potentially play in escalation is significant.

and no I don’t think another 07 Oct attack is acceptable. Just as - I’m sure - you don’t think the ongoing killing of 8000+ Palestinians is acceptable ???

They carry out terrorist attacks, I don’t see why anyone would elevate their views

And you still haven’t addressed the Hamas issue for Israel. You can’t think another attack as on October 7th is acceptable?

the speech was widely seen to be restrained indicating they would not get involved but things would escalate if it expanded further to south Lebanon.

Even if Hezbollah want that (I mean it’s not that surprising given their allegiances and terrorist status) it doesn’t resolve the Hamas issue

And since they intend to keep up the violence and threats to Israelis it’s a problem that can’t be ignored
