The news tonight was unbearable.
I am sickened that the West is not calling for a ceasefire or some restraint.
I found out today that Gaza is almost exactly the same size as the small Hebridean island of Jura. But whereas Jura has a few hundred residents, Gaza has 2.4 million packed in. You couldn't throw a stone into Gaza without it hitting someone, never mind a missile.
The children of Gaza are not terrorists and I wish Israel would stop.

‘epic suffering’ - that’s from the UN.
Israel can no longer claim any moral authority.
it’s creating generations of hatred and is in real danger of dragging us into another World
War.

I think the majority of people wish they would stop.
I don't know what the answer is.

Just so people stop quoting this, I mean I don't know what the long term resolution to the ongoing conflict should be, not only this current horrific situation. I should have added the words long term to start with.

‘I think the majority of people wish they would stop.
I don't know what the answer is.’

stop carpet bombing while pretending that’s going root out individual terrorists. It’s collective punishment.
No country claiming to be civilised punishes an entire country for the actions of the few.

the way to stop Gazan children being slaughtered is to stop killing them.

Israelis are now wondering why we aren’t talking about the dead from the Hamas attack as much any more. 2,000 +
and GROWING dead children - that’s why.

You're quoting me without tagging me, so I'll reply (again) - i mean the long term answer of how to resolve the ongoing conflict, not just what needs to hsppen immediately.

This is not about self defence any more. It's ethnic cleansing. It's about as proportionate at the UK obliterating the Catholic areas of Belfast and other towns in NI in response to IRA attacks.

And in doing something so obviously wrong, the Israeli government is providing fertile breeding ground for the next generation of Hamas. Perpetuating the cycle of violence. Young Palestinian boys who survive this will grow up hating Israel and seeing it as an enemy to be destroyed - because this is what Israel is teaching them right now.

Sippingmytea · 25/10/2023 07:07

It’s disgusting. It is so far beyond self-defence. I can’t believe anybody can justify the slaughter of innocent people. They need to stop bombing now.

KimberleyClark · 25/10/2023 06:29

SammyScrounge · 25/10/2023 01:22

Israel is under bombardment too and Hamas knows that the Israelis will retaliate. This is what happens in war, every war that ever was and ever will be.

Hamas cannot possibly bomb Israel to the same extent Israel is bombing Gaza because Hamas does not have an air force. Imagine if the UK government had sent the RAF to bomb Belfast in the hope of wiping out the IRA.

It’s been running out for weeks now??

Ive been perplexed by that too - and the water as well

Today I learnt that UN has huge warehouses in Gaza storing fuel medicines water etc - because they're not being topped up with new deliveries of aid they are now virtually empty

UN said yesterday they have 2 days of supplies left and after that they will not be able to function in Gaza

Also Hamas has been stealing fuel from the UN intended for hospital generators

@borris - I completely agree with you. I think women would find solutions or compromises whereas men seem unable to, usually because of ego

Ok but just from this country, Theresa May spearheaded bombing the fuck out of Syria and Iraq just a few short years ago.

Or doesn't that count because the telly didn't show you the destruction? Because, laughably, the British Government only accepted killing one civilian, because its precision strikes were so world-beating and amazing? The only one of its allies not to accept responsibility for thousands of civilian casualties, by the way.

Only official civilian victim of UK’s bombing campaign against IS appears not to exist

Contradictions over missions in Syria and Iraq deepens concern over Britain’s ‘perfect’ precision war

Gaza has a population density similar to London, has a lower population density than New York and is by no means the most densely populated place on Earth. Comparing it to Jura is a bit disingenuous. Why not choose a piece of land the same size in somewhere like Manila?

They’re also not entirely without electricity (lots of solar panels), food and water (Israel supplies around 10%). Hamas could have provided solutions to these problems and actually provided for and safeguarded their people instead of committing terrorist atrocities while sacrificing those same people.

One big difference between London and Gaza is it doesn't have a great big wall round it stopping anyone leaving and has control of it's own airport/airspace

London is also pretty dependent on 'outside aid' for food and fuel too but we're okay with that because they create all the wealth in the UK! Anything Israel supplies to Gaza is paid for by international aid some of which is of dubious provenance - it's not done for free

20% of Gazas electricity was supplied by solar panels pre the war - personally I'd not call that lots but maybe some? Wondered why there aren't more too. Though solar panels don't do well with flying shrapnel, they are hard to hide and very vulnerab;e on roof tops - just as Gaza has been lobbing missiles into Israel for years, Israel has been doing some light bombing of Gaza infrastructure too

Such a mess

lokimoki · 25/10/2023 04:32

This needs to stop. I'm worried the dead children piling up is going to be normalised and something we end up occasionally having to dig up for info as we continue living our life. This is how genocides happen. As for terrorists, the most elite army cannot single out terrorists or do operations without harming civilians simply don't want to actually eliminate terrorists and quite frankly purposely target civilians to wipe out their kind. Less people, more land to grab by Netanyahu ey?

Efacsen · 25/10/2023 04:19

Toothyfruity · 25/10/2023 00:16

Imagine if tens of thousands of bombs rained down on New York or London or any city It would be carnage. Same as it is in Gaza. Only Gaza has been blockaded for years so they are much worse off to begin with.

Also you're telling lies about water in Gaza. Since 1967 Israel has controlled water in the occupied territories and has interfered with any attempts to build water infrastructure. Licences are required from the Israeli authorities and they never give them. They've also poisoned and destroyed wells in the past.

So that's why people are drinking sea water right now.

Edited

The water situation is complicated and this is only part of the story

Gaza used to be self-sufficient for water. The Gaza Aquifer could supply the entire population until the population increased rapidly over the last 10 years or so and demand outgrew the supply

Due to rising sea levels the aquifer has become tainted with sea-water and in recent years it has become contaminated with faecal bacteria - it's now deemed not safe to drink though still okay for bathing, laundry etc

This is what people are drinking at the moment and there's not enough of it

So due to the failure of the aquifer other sources of drinking water have been sought via Israel [paid for by humanitarian aid] but also de-salination technology [not gone well because Hamas stole aid funds] - the de-salination plants need an electrical supply so they have fallen foul of the electricity/fuel for generators embargo and no longer functioning

Israel agreed to turn the water back on sometime last week but is only supplying it to the designated 'safe area' in southern Gaza - 4% of the usual amount

At the best of times Gaza runs thirsty but now the UN stock of bottled water is gone- water tankers are bringing some water in from from Egypt with the other humanitarian aid only for the south and nowhere near enough

It's all very precarious

SinnerBoy · 25/10/2023 02:54

I admire the old lady who shook hands with the terrorists and said "Peace." I can only hope that it will lead some of them to pause and think, "Jewish people are human, just like us."

I'm sorry, but you are wrong about the water; Netanyahu said that its not going back on until all of the hostages have been freed.

As the American expression has it, words are free, whisky costs money.

Israel fears for its very existence, as do the vast, vast majority of world Jewry, which supports Israel. They have to act. Militarily. There‘s no other option for them.

Nobody likes this conflict but let’s not pretend that it’s some sort of terrible one-sided thing. If terrorists hide behind civilians the deaths and horrors are on the terrorists, not on the people wishing just to exist.

Israel is less than 80 years old. Will this guarantee the next 80?

The State of Israel, Israeli people, and Jewish people the world over cannot hide behind this wishing just to exist because implict is this existence comes at the extiction of another group

Lookatmytoes · 24/10/2023 23:08

It’s horrific. The deaths on both sides are an abomination. The continued killing of Palestinian children grotesque.

I admired the words of the Israeli pensioner who was released today. Her gesture of peace towards those who had held her hostage had so much humanity and wisdom. Would that both sides could show these qualities.

That elderly lady reduced me to tears today.
The only person I've seen with a spark of humanity and dignity in this horror of horrors.
Please God make it stop.

Why is that the best you can hope for? How is that the best for the Palestinians?

Because the sooner Israel win, the less Palestinians will die.

FrankieStein403 · 25/10/2023 01:01

Given that 1,500 Israelis were killed the IDF will start negotiating when 8-10,000 Palestinians have been killed. They have always worked on a ratio of between 5:1 and 8:1.

Unfortunately that ratio goes up when it's a 'war', hence the overall ratio currently around 15:1.

The IDF doesn't seem to have learnt that repeating a course of action and expecting different results is insane.

Obviously Netanyahu's son doesn't fear for anything as he relaxes in Miami.

Best we can hope for now with the impending ground invasion is a quick victory for Israel, then peace. Gazans will pay a terrible price though.

But even then, there won't be peace will there, until Israel have taken over the entire territory. There is no peace in the West Bank, where there is no hamas, yet armed settlers attack Palestinians and destroy homes at will to expand territory (Sheikh Jarrah, Jenin, Nablus) and attack worshippers praying at Al Aqsa in Ramadan.

Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians by the numbers

Between 2010 and 2019, nearly 3,000 Israeli settler attacks killed at least 22 Palestinians and injured 1,258 others.

HiggleDyPigGeldy · 25/10/2023 00:50

What Israel is doing is horrific.
Taking the terrorist actions of Hamas militants as an excuse to exterminate thousands of innocent women and children, while driving more than a million into the most horrendous possible living condition.

However, it is unreasonable to conflate what Israel is doing with the views of Jews around the world - I for one am completely appalled. I am having trouble sleeping and find myself despairing as former friends and acquaintances (and sadly also a family member) declare to me they are now joining the army to “defend” Israel. I say former friends because any attempt to question what they are doing is treated like a total betrayal or attempt at self sabotage.

But let’s not forget Isreal is about the only country that stands up immediately for its citizens, as has been evidenced in history.

Don't be silly.

Should you expect the Uk or Us, or indeed any country to negotiate with terrorists?

YES!

Of course they bloody should.

Countries ALWAYS negotiate with terrorists.

Israel itself is born out of terrorisim - Zionist terrorists bomed the shit out of the British in the 20s-30s.
Ireland - a republic because of terrorisim
USA - a republic because of terrorisim

and on and on.

Right now it just depends on how much slaughter the Israelis are up for.

Because this is clearly about razing Gaza to the ground, ethnic cleaning and will end in a land grab.

Israel is losing all moral right.

Nethanyahu is very expensive in every possible imaginable.

Totally agree
