Conflict in the Middle East

I’m not saying I’m pro Israel, however..:

Surely most people can understand that if Israel was Great Britain and Hamas came and massacred children and innocent people in early October, then Great Britain would go to war and absolutely hammer them back? You just have to look at the response to any other war we’ve had. Do you really think the British government would behave perfectly in this situation? Do you think any western nation would do anything else in response to such an attack? I can genuinely see British people screaming in the streets to murder all babies of Hamas if this was the case. (Not saying it’s right!! I just don’t think we would be better in any way!!)

Personally I find this a really complicated conflict due to the deep history and I feel deeply sorry for civilians on each side.

Supporters of Israel have not murdered in our western towns and cities.

Supporters of Palestine have.

I support Israel

Are you forgetting the 6 year old Palestinian-American boy who was murdered in the US for being Muslim? He was stabbed to death, his mother just survived her multiple stab wounds.

The “ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis” was why the boy and his mother – who also suffered more than a dozen stab wounds but survived – were targeted, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. (CNN)

Loved ones and strangers united in grief Monday at the funeral of a 6-year-old Chicago-area boy who was killed because he was Muslim, officials say.

Equating Hamas with ISIS is outright propaganda anyway. It's easier to throw such loaded equivalencies around, because then you can hate the other side easier and power the blood lust.

Absolutely do not look up why Hamas came about. That might break the spell.

Speaking of hatred and powering blood lust, this is the Hamas founding charter:

'the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).'

Hamas attack was horrendous.

Lots wrong with british history but as pp said Look at northern Ireland. The IRA bombed many British cities and killed many people. The British didn't carpet bomb northern Ireland.

Step up security
Close borders
Better intelligence
Go for hamas leaders

Stop comparing Hamas to the IRA.

'Footage of senior Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar calling for world domination has resurfaced online.

“We believe in what our Prophet Muhammad said: “Allah drew the ends of the world near one another for my sake, and I have seen its eastern and western ends. The dominion of my nation would reach those ends that have been drawn near me," Zahar said in the video that was published on MEMRI TV in December of 2022,

“The entire 510 million square kilometers of Planet Earth will come under [a system] where there is no injustice, no oppression, no Zionism, no treacherous Christianity and no killings and crimes like those being committed against the Palestinians, and against the Arabs in all the Arab countries, in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and other countries," he said.'

That isn't the issue, the poster may be backtracking now, but her original post didn't say Hamas. It has been deleted, but I did copy some in an earlier post.
She talked about supporters of Palestinians basically getting a shock when a jihadi knocked on their door with a gun, in a cruder way.

I'm not about to take anyone's word for what it said, and I don't really care anyway. I was making a separate point.

whereaw · 23/10/2023 22:46

The problem also is that once you defeat one radical Islamic organisation, another one appears. And these are people who live within a population, they are fathers and husbands with wives and children and elderly parents... so what is the answer? These are people who would happily inflict the worst evils on me and you and our children, and spit in our faces while doing so. So what is the answer?

It's by no means certain you can use the term radical Islamist here, or even Islamist, here. Let's see if this post stays up.

Hamas never wanted to live in peace and never ever will. They want to eradicate Israel. So what do people who wish for peace suggest? Remember, Hamas started this. I cannot watch the news full stop, and haven't for years because I cannot cope to see any of the cruel and unfair horrors that inflict children and innocent people, but I do ask what the people who are protesting against Israel suggest?

ssd · 23/10/2023 22:41

I keep reading that hamas is trying to wipe israel off the map. And when i watch the news all i see is Gaza being wiped off the map.

So who is actually being wiped out??

As per the good Jewish tradition, I will answer your question with another question.
What will happen if Israel stops the war with Hamas?
And, why does Hamas uses their own civilians as human shields? Hiding their weapons in schools, mosques etc? Because when Israel goes after them they shout "look, Israel is bombing our innocent people again!" People go on protests for Israel to stop... That's exactly what Hamas wants.

If Israel stops bombing Gaza, Hamas wins. I really wish they didn't have to do that. I worry about Gazan civilians as much as you do.

But how else should Israel get rid of Hamas??
Should they ask them politely to stop?

What blows my mind is that there were so many anti-Israel protests, but not a single anti-Hamas protest.

I’m anti Netanyahu and anti Hamas. My sympathies lie with the innocent Israeli and Palestinians. An Israeli life isn’t worth more than a Palestinian and vice versa. Both sides are guilty.

Thank you @Lamelie

It seems that some (including admin) concluded this to be an anti-Muslim post.

Let me clarify again, I was specifically taking about Hamas.
Hamas is a radical islamist organization.

I am not saying that all Muslims are radical Islamists.
Hamas is.

It's by no means certain you can use the term radical Islamist here, or even Islamist, here. Let's see if this post stays up.

Lelophants · 23/10/2023 20:48

No, but perhaps you can still empathise for why it’s happened, especially if it was your loved ones.

So maybe you can understand as well why Hamas gets so much support in Palestine … when people have been kicked out of their houses, families broken by a few people being killed by Israel , no water etc … you don’t have much more to lose

TomeTome · 23/10/2023 22:23

There is no justification for bombing and killing thousands of civilians including huge numbers of children. Anyone who thinks that’s ok has lost sight of their humanity and should be ashamed of themselves.

cherryblossomwoman · 23/10/2023 22:23

Lamelie · 23/10/2023 21:55

It’s an an important distinction and yes of course. Hamas don’t even represent all Palestinians.

No-one has said Hamas has done any good for Palestine, that I can see.

Could you explain how people are confused? How could supporting Palestinian civilians mean supporting Hamas?

People have killed other people to claim their territory and resources since time immemorial. Many times they used ideological or religious reasons as to why it's OK to do this. Britain is as guilty as many others in this respect. It still goes on and UK is happy to sell weapons knowing they will kill innocent civilians.

Britain killed lots of innocent civilians in WW2. I don't hear much collective guilt about it though, oddly enough. Although given British people's current masochistic streak, I shouldn't tempt fate.

Was Britain killing innocent civilians in WW2 because they wanted to claim other people's territory and resources? They didn't do a great job of that really did they.

How many civilians have to die to make it better?

Every single time... The IRA wanted independence for northern Ireland. They did not want to eradicate the British state and remove its inhabitants so the Irish could live in it, they did not want to genocide the English, they had not spent centuries ruling over the English and treating them as second class citizens on their own land,. They were not seeking global dominion for their god or the Day of Judgment. This is the Hamas founding charter:

'the Islamic Resistance Movement aspires to the realisation of Allah's promise, no matter how long that should take. The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him salvation, has said:

"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. No op. Look at northern Ireland. The IRA bombed many British cities and killed many people. The British didn't carpet bomb northern Ireland.

What Israel is doing in retaliation is wrong. There must be a way for a sophisticated country like Israel to find hamas supporters without indiscriminately killing thousands of civilians. Saying oh hamas hide in hospitals so we'll bomb wherever etc is morally wrong. The British could have said oh the IRA hide in communities and hospitals we'll bomb the hell out the place...but they didn't. Ask yourself why.

Bloody Sunday. The first one was a retaliation. It didn’t happen in the north in happened in Dublin but it is an example of what happened to those who fought for freedom.

I am pro-Israel.

What people don't seem to understand is that Israel right now is trying to eliminate Hamas. They don't want to kill civilians in Gaza. But if they don't go after Hamas then they are going to come back for more atrocities. Hamas is not about improving Palestinians' situation. Hamas' goal is to wipe Israel off the map. There is simply no other way. Hamas is a plague that needs to be eliminated.

100% accurate

The British have a shocking history which is shameful and our government has behaved very poorly in recent years too. I wouldn't support our govt going to war in similar circumstances and I don't support Israel either.
