If Gaza, post-war, is still being run by extremists who attack Israel then the blockades will continue and yes they will struggle to run and country and rebuild anything.

So Israel will still control Gaza? They will still be using collective punishment on 2.2million people? You can't say you are having nothing to do with a country whilst you still control them.

The whole situation is f%#*ed.

Did the Palestinians actually vote Hamas in? Quite a lot of brainwashing seems to have gone on. Maybe on both sides.

It’s so far removed from multi-cultural life in the UK.

Thats what the records say, but seriously, do you think Hamas would count the votes for Fatah honestly? And not round people up at gunpoint and demand they vote for them or their sister will be….well you know…violence violence death, burn your house down.

They could build a port I suppose, yes.

If Israel lifts the sea blockade. Several NGOs have attempted to run the blockade to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza since 2005. All have failed.

Notmytotoro · 20/10/2023 21:12

Gaza is one of the countries who receives one of the highest levels of aid in the world.
After the war instead of spending that aid in funding terrorism they must spending it in rebuild their country and make more jobs for younger people, create more opportunities for their own people, they have huge unemployment and poverty.

First, Gaza is not a country. It is has no sovreignity. It is a territory occupied by Israel. No aid was spent on terrorism because all aid has been closely supervised by Israel and the UN. They could not “create opportunities” due to the blockade since 2005. Attempts were made but were all sabotaged by manipulation of the blockade.

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 21:15

@Humblebottomous Hamas was voted in

Because Britain and Russia are voting against peace and the US vetoing.

It’s obvious how Putin benefits from the distraction of a war elsewhere but how to Britain and the US benefit.?

It’s a weird world when China sounds like the grown up in the room.

As a matter of fact, Russia submitted cease fire and humanitarian resolution to the UN Security Council that was vetoed by the US. The second resolution was from Brazil asking for a humanitarian pause, also vetoed by the U.S. with the U.K. abstaining.

Russia has been trying for a cease fire and humanitarian aid since the start.

The place is being flattened, it's inhabitable

How will such a poor country ever rebuild itself?

So, whilst I am more than willing to accept that Hamas leadership likes to spend its foreign aid on whatever the fuck it likes, I now am not quite so sure it’s a simple fait accompli.

Hamas doesn’t get any of the foreign aid. Per the occupation laws of Israel, all humanitarian aid monetary or otherwise goes through Israel and Israel supervises how it is distributed, it is then distributed to UNWRA (it’s why only Palestinians have their own UN refugee agency), and other international organisations like international Red Cross/Red Crescent. Israel also limits how much can be bought and sent into Gaza as aid- food, medicine, etc.

Hamas’ funds are covertly acquired and are from them levying taxes on the hapless Gazan residents. It’s like Mafia “protection money”…

It is why Hamas has decades old or homemade weapons.

SomeCatFromJapan · 20/10/2023 21:09

Here is the BBC reporting on it, it means that Israel will cut all ties with Gaza post-conflict:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-67175094

At a guess I'd say that will also mean no border between the two and no permits given for work, medical treatments etc. The Gazans will need to use the Rafah border with Israel.

Israeli tanks seen on a road near Israel's border with the Gaza Strip, in southern Israel, 20 October

Israel aims to cut Gaza ties after war with Hamas

Israel's defence minister says the country's long-term plan is to cut ties completely with Gaza.

Downnative said that a
Israel will have nothing to do with Palestine. Nothing to do with Palestinian people or infrastructure. That is not control

So they plan to let Gaza build a port? Have an airport? Use all of their land?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 20/10/2023 21:06

Yes.

it's abhorrent

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/10/2023 21:04

To me ceasing responsibility means Israel will stop providing water, electricity etc to Gaza.why Hamas didn't spend the money on those things instead of weapons to murder innocent people is beyond me

Did you see the other thread about water earlier? Many people have been asking why Hamas haven’t concentrated on building and maintaining a drinking water supply before now. And yet, every well has to have Isreali government approval and planning permission. Which is very difficult to get. And without it, the Isreali army have Carte Blanche to destroy any unapproved wells. Which they do. So, whilst I am more than willing to accept that Hamas leadership likes to spend its foreign aid on whatever the fuck it likes, I now am not quite so sure it’s a simple fait accompli.

It was on radio 4 this evening.

Basically it means that once Hamas is destroyed Israel will have nothing to do with Gaza. They will have a new government, and Israel will have nothing to do with them

What downnative described doesn't sound like they would have nothing to do with Gaza? It sounded like they still plan to control them?

Sorry I didn't read the other comments.

I do think Gazans after this war need to have different government, one who truly cares about their people , a government who does not start a war..

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 20:46

@DownNative yes this is what was reported on radio 4

TopicalNameChange · 20/10/2023 20:45

Would you want Hamas for your neighbour? You would trust them?

It will also have to mean that Palestinian areas will have to be, to use Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi's words, a demilitarised State.

El-Sissi believes there wouldn't have been war if it had been demilitarised long ago.

DownNative · 20/10/2023 20:35

usererror99 · 20/10/2023 17:00

I'd imagine it means that where currently Gaza gets a certain amount of power from Israel this will stop. Where as previously aid, medicine, water food etc was able to cross between Gaza and Israel this will be stopped. If Gaza wants or needs anything they will have to get it via the border with Egypt. Israel will effectively seal its border with Gaza and leave them to it to be self sufficient and govern themselves. Can hardly blame them really

You're on right track and most in this thread are not.

@flufferknutter the phrase "cease responsibility for life" means afterwards the State Of Israel will have no formal obligations to Gaza going forward.

It doesn't mean what you thought.

It means Israel will say its no longer responsible for telecommunications, water, electricity and sewage networks, as well as the flow of people and goods into and out of the territory. Gaza will NOT be able to use Israeli currency.

Palestinian Authority was supposed to maintain responsibility for security within Gaza, protect civilians within Gaza and to prevent indiscriminate attacks on Israeli civilians. Palestinian Authority completely failed and Hamas took over.

Gaza will be on its own and I seriously doubt if people will be allowed to move between Israel & Gaza too.

Not surprising after Hamas took Gaza and spent the years since developing its terrorist weapons capabilities & infrastructure. Planned the attack on Israel having convinced Israel, Western Powers and other countries in the Middle East they're too busy governing Gaza Strip.

Israel intend on keeping Gaza at arms length and increasing a DMZ between them, hence Gaza will shrink.

No work permits for Gazans to go to Israel - partly how Hamas knew where to go no 7th October 2023.

There's no way Israel or any other State will be able to trust Gaza again. Not for a very, very, very long time at least.
