People like you pretending it is just like any other border aren't helping the conversation either.

No, it's not like any other border, but it doesn't help the conversation either to ignore part of the reason why the border how it is, is for Israeli national security, and I would have thought that events of 7 October would have made that quite clear.

Again, I think it's utterly shit for ordinary Gazans caught up in the situation.

Great then maybe stop pretending it is like any other border then. It is unhelpful in the extreme and eejits read what you say and believe you.

SomeCatFromJapan · 20/10/2023 21:45

The civilians did not attack anyone. 50% of the population are children. That poster said Israel shouldn't help them because they are Hamas. That means at least 50% aren't Hamas.

Again, the ordinary civilians and children in Russian didn't invade Ukraine either. But sanctions were nevertheless put in place.
Ordinary children in Germany didn't invade Poland, we still bombed them in their homes, and they ours.

The UK doesn't produce enough food to support its population either. Does that mean they don't produce any food?

Slightly different topic but Israel supplied the British with food during our lockdown shortages. The food was diverted from wherever it was grown or made, whether that be Israel or somewhere else. I realised some supermarkets had more kosher stamps and Hebrew on labels than I have ever seen before. So asked a store manager why.

DownNative · 20/10/2023 21:45

Gruntsandgroans · 20/10/2023 21:03

What downnative described doesn't sound like they would have nothing to do with Gaza? It sounded like they still plan to control them?

They will keep Gaza at arms length in every way afterwards. That's phrase 3.

Before that, it's important that they destroy Hamas. Hopefully they're able to do so as both Israelis and Palestinians need that threat gone.

A demilitarised Palestinian State is what it's hoped will emerge at the end of this. That kind of State could then build things like ports. A non-aggressive demilitarised Palestine will be unconditional.

Very different to the Hamas era 2005-2023.

You are conflating all Palestinians with Hamas yet again.

Hamas is the ruling party of Gaza though, it's a fair point asking why Israel would help a country that just attacked them.
In practice I would love to see them ensure a water supply and let humanitarian aid in, btw.

SomeCatFromJapan · 20/10/2023 21:42

For instance when Russia invaded Ukraine, there were sanctions put in place. No-one was saying that was unfair because it was Putin not ordinary Russians.

SomeCatFromJapan · 20/10/2023 21:38

Gaza has farmers as Israel well knows, they like to use them as target practice.

I genuinely don't think comments like this are helpful. People could make hyberbolic, inflammatory statements about actions on both sides but how does that help actually having a sensible discussion?

Why else would they shoot at them as they farm their own land? To be kind?

I don't see why we shouldn't call out what Israel does. How Israel control people inside Gaza, prevent them from farming on 33% of the fertile land and from what downnative said they plan to increase that. People like you pretending it is just like any other border aren't helping the conversation either.

@Trulywonderful But if Israel does not want Gaza, why did Eli Cohen say that Gaza's territory will be decreased after the war?

They have been talking about a bigger buffer zone all along border. So probably this. It would help save lives on both sides but there is an argument to whose land is used. I would say half each to save argument but I doubt that will happen.

Else if something else I have not heard anything or read anything about it.

Why would Israel "help" when Hamas have slaughtered and kidnapped 1,400+ people? Did you ask America to "help" Al Qaeda in the aftermath of 9/11?

You are conflating all Palestinians with Hamas yet again.

I'm just curious - for those people who are strong supporters of Hamas and the Palestinian struggle - and that strategy that they have employed over the last 75 and more years - how's that working out for the people of Gaza? Is it going they way you hoped?

I don't think you will find any supporters of Hamas here, nevermind strong supporters.

Trulywonderful · 20/10/2023 21:35

BagForLifer · 20/10/2023 21:25

Was it a real and fair election or was it rigged in any way?

It was as fair as it could be made really. Not as bad as some places but not like say the UK. Also was nearly 20 years ago.

The majority of Palestinian citizens have said in surveys since the 2021 rocket conflict that they blame for causing conflict. They also blame Hamas for unemployment and utility issues. However they have majority stated they want the dismantling of Israel.

If they had another election befthis conflict and it was fair. I believe the Palestinians would have voted out Hamas. Probably for a party that stated it wanted to dismantle but was mostly interested in solving unemployment and improving living conditions.

AlwaysPrettyOnTheInside · 20/10/2023 21:33

Why do they need permission from Israel when the bottom border of gaza meets Egypt? Why can't Egypt just send trucks over that bit?

Also with regards to water, gaza has sea on one side, why don't they have desalination plants?

And why don't they produce any of their own food?

If this situation now has always been a possibility, why haven't they taken measures to be self sufficient?

Latest reports say it isn't Egypt blocking aid, they can't get agreement from the Israeli government for more than 20 trucks. An Egyptian minister has said they're angry at the misrepresentation that Egypt are the ones blocking aid.
I don't know exactly who is behind it, but you'd think whoever is blocking it would just agree and put conflict on the back burner for a moment.

So Israel will still control Gaza? They will still be using collective punishment on 2.2million people? You can't say you are having nothing to do with a country whilst you still control them.

No, they'll just control their border. The USA for instance doesn't control Mexico.

In practical terms, yes it'll be shit for Gaza but what choice will Israel have if that's that or give free rein to terrorist attacks?

Are you saying that Mexico have no ports or airports? Have no control over their airspace? Or are you saying that Israel will give let Gaza have seaports and airports?

They won't do the job as gate keepers to Gaza like they were asked to do by the UN anymore. Once they pull out ground troops. They will treat Gaza like any other neighbouring state. Someone else like Egypt or the UN will have to police them from now on Israel has frankly had enough. If they were to help in anyway or stay to rebuild people will say they are land grabbing Gaza. The fact the willingly gave up Gaza in 2005 seems to be forgotten. Israel has never wanted Gaza anyway that land isn't seen as part of Israel even by settler idiots. Only a had full of Jews lived there and had to leave in 2005. The UN can't ask them to be gate keepers then complain for years about them not doing it properly. So the UN can sort that out themselves know as far as Israel is concerned. Once they do heaven knows what in a ground assault. They are no longer playing ball to international demands to do things for a place that they have always seen as a foreign country.

This all has a terrible after affect on Gazen citizens. I they will supply water and a few other things for a set agreed amount of time. Long enough for alternative supplies to be made available. It is also sad the Gazens that were coming to work in Israel each day will be stopped on top of possibly losing their houses. Not seeing them being allowed across the border now and unemployment is terrible in Gaza even before this.
