YOU brought the island of Ireland along with resulting partition of it into Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as a way to compare with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Not me! 🙈

So, of course you're not going to engage.

Like I said, the two situations were and are very different.

Years and years?! Nope, I've not been on Mumsnet for "years and years!" 🤣

Of course you have been here for multiple years. When I posted what I did I said to my dh who is sat beside me 'this one DownNative isn't going to be able to resist trying to stick a needle in some how' and surprise, surprise up you popped as predictable as rain in Galway. I've seen your posts, I know how you feel about Ireland, why you feel that way is something you should work out with a qualified professional. I'm not derailing the thread any further.

Is the IDF slaughtering and torturing thousands of Palestinians since 1948 fighting back against them objecting to having their homes taken?

You didn’t answer my question. Yours doesn’t make any sense.
Is Hamas slaughtering and torturing 1400 innocent people and injuring 5000 more in one day part of the Palestinians having “the audacity to fight back”?

Who, me?

I'm probably of the same religious background as the PP you quoted - Catholic. Definitely not a colonialist by any means.

But whatever floats your boat. 🤷‍♂️

"Empire"?! 🤣

I'm deffo not engaging with you on the topic of Ireland. You have consistently posted for years and years on this issue. Still hung up about it, taking any opportunity you can get to slag Ireland off. We've moved on down here in the Republic I suggest you find a way to move on too.

Ah, the Republic of Ireland. That's not really how it went, but hey! And the GDP is so skewed by US multinational corporations that the Irish Government doesn't use that. See Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2008 winner.

You know as well as I do that the Anglo-Irish Treaty was accepted by Michael Collins and Sinn Féin. And that the British Government backed Collins' Pro-Treaty IRA against Anti-Treaty IRA too. Dominion status until 1949 when the Free State became a Republic.

A very different situation to that of the Palestinian leadership who rejected every single possible deal. In 2011, Abbas admitted that it was a mistake to reject the 1947 deal.

Very different situation.

Smug gloating over the plight of the Palestinians who were displaced and forced out and then had the audacity to fight back. Bullies often go crying to the teacher though. It's a well trodden strategy.

I'm not engaging with someone who blames a country for being occupied. I live in a country that was occupied, we freed ourselves from oppression and 100years later are thriving far more than our occupiers, with a GDP per capita of more than twice theirs. Countries cannot thrive under occupation. Free Palestine from occupation, come back to me in 100 years and we will see how it went for them.

And I’m not sure how the meaning of “ceasing Israel’s responsibility for life in the Gaza strip” isn’t clear?

Your post implies that for 75 years the Palestinians have been helpless observers of their own misfortunes, without agency.

i don’t think that’s true: for 75 years (actually more than 75 years) they’ve been active participants in the events that have shaped Israel, the Palestinian Territories, and the wider Middle East.

My question is, how has the strategy or strategies that the various Palestinian factions have employed, for nearly four generations, worked out for them?

Maybe it’s time to take stock and ask how it’s going. Seems to be going ok for Israel, for sure.

The Palestinians have been subjugated, controlled, imprisoned, brutalised, bombed and had their land and homes stolen since 1948.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

The Nakba came as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War when Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Iraq and Lebanon invaded following Israel's declaration of independence.

That conflict saw population transfer as Palestinians were moved out and Jewish people were also moved out of neighbouring Arab States.

Had those five Arab States not invaded and tried to strangle the State of Israel ar birth, things may well have been different.

The United Nations' 1947 partition plan should have been accepted by the Palestinians. Since then, they've rejected every possible deal to the point where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman said they should accept it or shut up.

I wouldn't be surprised if some believe their leaders should have accepted the 1947 plan. Ah, yes...Abbas admitted that in 2011.

Hamas oppose permanently coexisting alongside Israel. Another reason to get rid of them.

As you said, "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction."

I don't think it would be anyone's 'strategy' to be victims of genocide? Your post is kinda weird tbh. It feels like you are gloating about Israelis committing genocide?

SomeCatFromJapan · 20/10/2023 22:10

The official reason for this was security and self defence.

Tbf 7 October did illustrate that need rather well.

Hear, hear @SomeCatFromJapan There is absolutely no question that the Palestinians have been unjustifiably oppressed and this absolutely needs to change, but sometimes the dissembling on display here is unbelievable. From 1993-2008 before the increased security controls/blockades in Gaza and the West Bank, there were 85 suicide bombings in Israel, carried out mainly by Hamas, Fatah and the PIJ, killing 733 people in total. Hamas broke through the Gaza blockade and killed 1400 civilians and injured over 5000 in one day. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to suggest security and self defence are critical. It’s possible to be compassionate and condemn the treatment of the Palestinians without being so dismissive of the suffering of Israelis and their need for protection.

I didn’t ask why you think Israel has done better.

I asked if you think the Palestinians’ strategy has worked out well for them.

And if you think they should do the same again.
