Miscarriage 5 weeks ago - BFP today -pregnant or residual HCG?

missamiss · 12/07/2009 21:44

Had an mc 5 weeks ago when I was 4/5 weeks pregnant. No period since, so out of curiosity/hope did a test today and got a BFP.

Am I likely to be pregnant, or could it just be residual HCG from the last pregnancy?

If this helps, basically if your still bleeding or have cramps from mc there prob is hcg still enough to show up as a pregnancy, As you was only 4/5 weeks generally i would presume that this is not the case and it may be a new pregnancy.. I had mc at 5 weeks and was pregnant the next month, but i lost that one too at 11 weeks, this mc took 10 weeks for my levels to come down and get a negative as some was still left inside (too small for d&c)hope this helps.. good luck missamiss

I know this may be no help to some ladies or maybe some help to others, I lost my baby at 11 weeks. I had a BFP for 5 weeks 5 days after my ERPC. It too a whopping 61 days for my next period. It will sort itself out, it will probably drive you mad in waiting for it, I was going mental as it felt the nightmare was never ending. Hold in there it will end and your body will sort itself out.

Sometimes there is no reassurance from your doctor or nurse but this forum has helped keep me calm. If anyone else wants reassurance or to talk to someone I am here. Its not easy and not everyone understands, what hurts most is how people tend to avoid the subject just when your ready to talk. Thinking of you all.

missamiss, sorry to read your message. I do hope things go OK over the next few days I will be thinking of you.
I went to the Docs yesterday as I have an uncomfortable feeling in my low right abdomen - he thinks its a uti, need to wait for test results before he'll prescribe anything. He did a pregnancy test which came up negative, but then explained the ones they use in the surgery are not nearly as sensitive as those available in Boots. I did a clear blue digital when I got home and thats still saying 1-2 weeks. So I guess I just need to test again in a few days and it will either go down if its left over from the D&C or up to 2-3 weeks if its a new pregnancy.

OnlyWantsOne · 17/07/2009 07:20

thats really horrid for you x x

littleboyblue · 17/07/2009 04:39

missamiss I'm so sorry I have no words of comfort. Although been through it 3 times myself, I know that nothing anyone says makes the slightest bit of difference to how you'll feel.

Take care

Miss I just wanted to say the exact same thing happened to me. I had a mc at 5 weeks in December then fell pregnant 4 weeks later and again mc in Jan.

It took me almost 6 weeks for my HCG levels to return to normal after that second mc, the consultant said it was due to extra HCG receptors in my body due to the 2 mcs in a row. During that time I never had a massive bleed but loads of random small bleeds and cramping which got annoying. I had to go to the hospital every 2/3 days to get blood taken, I felt like a pin cushion!

Hope you get it all sorted soon, 1 mc is bad enough but 2 is horrible.

BigTeuchLittleTeuch · 16/07/2009 22:57

hey missamiss, sorry to hear about the bleeding and I hope the bloods can clear up things for you asap so that you can move forward whatever happens.

Take care.

missamiss · 16/07/2009 20:59

Hi all, I started bleeding yesterday so although I was pregnant but it's not to be. Had blood taken at EPU today (which ironically was what confirmed the pregnancy) and will have another lot taken on Saturday.

Bluespix - I hope you get good news.
Arena - good luck with the birth

Hi I was about 10 weeks pregnant when I had my D&C although I think the baby had stopped developing around the 8 week stage. I think I will call the Doctor tomorrow.

arena · 15/07/2009 10:31

Hi Missamiss, sorry about your m/c. However i do think you are pregnant again.

I had a m/c last year in nov, and 4/5 weeks later i was still gettting postive pregnant test, i thought it may still be some of the tissue that was left behind as i opted for a natural m/c.

So i left it, in the end i finally went to the doctors i was feeling so ill, they sent me to the hospital, as they thought i was having a molar pregnancy, they did a scan, i was shocked to be told that i was 10 weeks pregnant, im 36 weeks now, so good luck and i hope you get the results your looking for.

rainbowdays · 15/07/2009 10:02

Missamiss - a scan at this stage will not show anything conclusive, as DarrellRivers said what you need is BHcg blood tests 48 hours apart to see if the levels are going up or down. Once I had it confirmed with me that I was miscarrying, I tested regularly with internet cheapy tests to show the tests gradually getting darker over the month, it was slow progress for me to get a negative test.

As we are a few days further on now, a quick check for you to get an idea now, would be to test with the same make of test as you used on Sunday and see if the line is darker or lighter, it is not accurate, but would give you an idea of what might be happening.

I hope it is good news for you.

DarrellRivers · 15/07/2009 09:07

BHCG levels falling vary a great deal from pregnancy to pregnancy
Sometimes they take days to return to 0, and sometimes weeks.
I miscarried at 5+5/40 with a big bleed and clots, and was still showing positive pregnancy test 1 month later.
Scan showed nothing remaining but it took several weeks to return to normal
I researched loads of data, and it seems there is a wide range in the what happens to women's bhcg levels after m/c
Bhcg blood tests 48 hours apart to see whether going up or down is really the only way to get a definitive answer

skihorse · 15/07/2009 09:01

bluespix How far were you when you mc? The reason I ask is that it is my understanding that once you've had the D&C your hormone levels should fall VERY quickly... might be worth asking the doctor about this?

bluespix77 · 14/07/2009 22:50

hi, would be great to know how you get on. I had a D&C 3 weeks ago and am showing 1-2 weeks on the clearblue digital pregnancy tests. I got a bit excited and then worked out the D&C was only 3 weeks ago and that it maybe left over hormones!

littleboyblue · 14/07/2009 07:17

Thank you missamiss.
Goodluck. Let us know how it goes. x

missamiss · 13/07/2009 21:27

Joolsiam, Skihorse and Littleboyblue - sorry to hear about your losses. LBB, congrats on your DS.

Thanks for all your input and comments.

Rockdoctor, RubyLove and Rainbowdays - sorry to hear about your recent losses. RubyLove, good luck with testing tomorrow. It sounds positive.

I did a Clearblue Digital test this evening and it said 2-3 weeks, which I think is 4-5 weeks in regular counting.

I will ask for a scan to check if it is caused by retained tissue. I didn;t have any scans when I miscarried as it was the first day of our holiday in Turkey and such options weren't available.

rainbowdays · 13/07/2009 14:58

It does sound hopeful, but it is possible to not fully miscarry. I was 6 weeks pg when I started to miscarry at the end of May and it took til the 1st of July for me to get a negative test. I had "retained products" even at 6 weeks, so hence the reason for my levels going down so slowly. But with my previous miscarriages at 5 weeks I got negative tests within a day of starting bleeding.

So I hope that it is good news for you.

clventrone · 13/07/2009 14:45

Hi, if there is any retained tissue the pregnancy test can still be positive. See your GP and they should refer you for a scan at the local hospital and take bloods to confirm either a new pregnancy or if a little bit of tissue has been left behind.
Good luck I hope its good news

RubyLove1 · 13/07/2009 14:37

Im in the same boat also...hopefully! Had a mc on 25th May, was supposedly 7 wks.

Did 3 tests 2 weeks ago and got BFP on all three. Lady at EPAU said wait 2 weeks and test again, so will do so tomorrow. Since then I have been off work feeling incredibly sick and my boobs are very sore.

Good luck missamiss, hope its good news

Rockdoctor · 13/07/2009 09:52

missamiss - sorry to hear about your mc. I had one three weeks ago when I was about 6 weeks. I was still getting pregnancy symptoms last week but when I tested it was BFN.

Good luck - sounds like this is the real thing.

littleboyblue · 13/07/2009 08:55

I had a m/c at 6 weeks. 6 weeks later, did a HPT, got a BFP, went to doc who sent me for a scan, was 5.5 weeks pregnant. Ds2 is now 5 months old.

skihorse · 13/07/2009 08:43

I had a mc last month at 4+5 - I started bleeding on the Friday and Sunday midday I had a positive test with the old style kit and Monday evening I had a clearblue digital "Not pregnant". From what I understand it's very, very unlikely those hormones would still be hanging around... so CONGRATS!

happyatlast · 12/07/2009 23:19

Its ok, it was over 5 years ago and three weeks later I was pregnant with my beautiful son so it all turned out ok! I wouldnt have him had I not miscarried.

missamiss · 12/07/2009 22:55

Sorry to hear about your mc happyatlast.
