Sorry to butt in but can I just ask is Clomid just for people who do not ovulate or people who are having trouble conceiving. I've been TTC for over a year, and have had all the fetility tests, cycle monitoring, HSG, DP has been tested. All came bak ok and normal, blood test and ultra sound showed that all is normal and i ovluated (at least that month). I see the Dr on Thurs, but wondered what optins were, and of Clomid might help.....

Thanks

stac14 · 03/08/2009 14:11

Hello all,

This is quite long...

My trip to the gynae was horrible. First, I was waiting for well over an hour before the receptionist realised my file had been misplaced (I really wasn't in the mood to pick a fight with anyone, so I just sat there and read magazines). Then, the gynae had a bit of a go because I hadn't brought a menstrual diary with me and I couldn't really remember the last 7 months. My BMI has gone up by one point since I was there last year, so that wasn't really appreciated either

She said she would refer me to the endocrinologist, who will probably prescribe Metformin. At least that's good news.

Next, I said, "But what about this bleeding then?" She thinks it's PCOS-related, but decided to take a biopsy to be 100% certain that it isn't anything more than that. The biopsy was the most painful thing I can remember being put through in my life! I told her it made me have second thoughts about giving birth!

Anyway, while she was doing that, she asked about my employment, and I told her I want to work towards becoming an Occupational Therapist. I've never witnessed such a personality transformation! She was lovely after that.

While I was putting my shoes back on, the pain had pretty much subsided, so I was asking her about the prescription she gave me to stop the bleeding. As you do. I have to take it for 21 days.

She also said she doesn't want to give me Clomid yet. Not because she doesn't like me, but if I catch pregnant while I'm overweight, I may have to deal with many other complications during the pregnancy. She told me I'm still young and have time to lose weight before TTC. That's why she'd like the endocrinologist to see me first.

I had the prescription in my hand, and was just about to leave, when I came over all funny. She asked me to sit down again and said, "We don't want you fainting on us!" Then she and the nurse said I looked like I needed a good cry. So I did.

Once I'd composed my self a bit, I got out of there as quickly as I could and headed for the loo, sorted myself out a bit more, then left. I was shaking and sobbing all the way up the hill to my car.

I drove straight to my Mum's house. Had a cup of sweet tea and a couple of lovely Belgian cookies, and I felt a million times better

I'm still in a bit of pain, and I'm bleeding a lot more now, but I'm happy in the knowledge that something is finally being done for me.

I'll let you know when I get back from holiday stac14!! Im going to think about it - but I probably will.

stac14 · 31/07/2009 17:57

Hey clwc how did it go today? All good I hope

sunshine good to know the accupuncturist wasnt trying to make you go to him probably an indication he is professional, are you going to do it? xxx

Sunshine15 · 31/07/2009 13:20

Thanks Clwc. There's a highly recommended acupuncturist in my area that I have spoken to and even he said for me to hold off acupuncture until after a month of clomid - so he wasnt hard selling to me - and he said to come for a couple of sessions after a month - so I may well do (altho yes - v. expensive!!). As you say, mental wellbeing can work wonders too, and I feel I need a bit of balance at the mo with TTC!!!

I'll let you know how it goes, but going on hols for two weeks next week so wont be til after that.

Clwc · 31/07/2009 12:09

Hi Sunshine

I think that the success of acupuncture depends on the skill of the acupuncturist. Although, even if it doesn't work for fertility issues, it can make you feel more positive and healthier all round. When I went, it hurt. He told me it 'stings' because he has found the correct channel of chi. There is probably a placebo effect, which isn't a bad thing. The human mind can work wonders. You've got nothing to lose by trying alternatives. Oh, except for your hard-earned cash!

Let's hope this month's Clomid does work for you. x

OP posts:
Sunshine15 · 31/07/2009 08:51

Really hoping the clomid works and its good to hear some positive feedback.

Can I just add that lots of people recommend acupuncture to me, and if this month's clomid doesnt work, then Im going to go for some sessions I think.

Worth a try??

Clwc · 31/07/2009 00:05

Hiya stac. I'll probably be organised by the time the appointment comes. Mind you, I'm getting more and more nervous by the hour. I doubt I'll sleep very well tonight. I think it's fear of the unknown.

What's happening with you these days? Your appt is next week, isn't it?

Clwc · 30/07/2009 14:58

Thanks Attila,

I had come to the conclusion it would be something like cervical cysts, fibroids or polyps.

I had the same cons the first two times I went, and I imagine it'll be the same one this time.

Have a great holiday, wherever you're going. I hope it doesn't rain as much as it has been here, in South Wales!

Hi comeonbishbosh. Thanks for popping by to tell us your story

OP posts:
comeonbishbosh · 30/07/2009 13:05

Hello, just thought I would pop in with a success story, and good luck to all of you who are still trying. I was quite pessimistic about my chances, felt in many ways I was just wasting time (I'm 37 so I wanted to get a move on).

After coming off the pill I didn't have a period, then just one, then nothing, so after 7 months was referred to consultant (I knew PCOS was in my family so pushed to get an early referral and my GP v. understanding).

provera to get started, and then 50mg of Clomid, going up to 100mg after 6 months or so. No terrible side effects except feeling emotional / moody.

All the other tests came through OK, but while checking my tubes they noticed a polyp had developed in my womb. It hadn't been there 3 months earlier, could have been a side effect of the Clomid though consultant said that this was quite rare. Also, the polyp could have been acting like a coil and stopping conception. Anyway, had a small op to take it out (spinal anesthetic, one night in, about a week off work), and conceived next cycle round. Now 13 weeks preggers.

Should mention I also had 2 months of weekly acupuncture treatment before I conceived, I find it difficult to know how this might or might not have helped, but the acupuncturist was a specialist in fertility issues and did seem very knowledgeable. Can't say I found it a barrel of laughs though.

Hope that's encouraging. I only knew friends with PCOS who hadn't conceived on Clomid (though had eventually got pregnant) so it's good to have some positive stories.

Good luck to you all, it feels tough I know.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 30/07/2009 08:00

clwc

First and foremost, good luck with your appt on Friday ((sending good luck vibes your way)).

I've had thrush as well but it never gave me any problems with bleeding.

Any bleeding between periods should be investigated further to ascertain the cause. Its often not serious, it could be cervical erosion for instance which can be treated. Hopefully they will be able to tell you the exact cause.

I would certainly mention this to the cons along with the frequency of pain experienced. Continuity of care is vitally important, you should ideally be seeing the same person each visit and be seen on a regular basis.

(I will be on holiday from tomorrow for a couple of weeks).

Clwc · 30/07/2009 00:49

Hello all,

Welcome to the new ladies

Attila, if you come on here... I have an appt with my cons on Friday (31st). I have PCOS. The GP prescribed me Clomid, which I took for 2 cycles in early April and early May. She shouldn't have prescribed it (I was told) and didn't monitor me, so I stopped taking it. I think Clomid did mess up my periods. I had a lot of spotting between them. I am currently on my 33rd day of light bleeding. The nurse at my GP's surgery (different GP now) found only thrush. Do you have any idea what I should ask the cons when I see her? Could it simply be PCOS-related? Or might it be something more sinister? The only pain I have is occasional strong ovulation type twinges.

Hi, im new to this thread and to mumsnet and thought I should join up and join in because ttc is driving me insane!

been ttc for 12mth - started using OPK and realised I wasnt ovluating, doc diagnosed PCOS in one ovary and am now on clomid and on day 18 of first mth. Even though some of you say OPK not recommended or accurate for people with PCOS and on clomid but OPK tells me today is the day so will be bding tonight for sure.

ttc takes over your world doesnt it? Its a wonder I havent been given the sack for all the internet time i spend on the matter! How can you relax and let it happen when its all you think about, counting days, peeing on sticks, getting scans etc so on and so forth!

Haylp!!!

JLO26 · 29/07/2009 14:05

Hi stac24

I have pcos, diagnosed when i was 16. Scan showed both ovaries, nurse had struggle to find them but she said she couldnt see any folicles. Having bloods on day 21 just to see progesterone levels. I am hoping i still ovulate but not sure. The specialist has also given me tablets to induce period if it doesnt happen after day 28.

Its a horrible waiting games isnt it!feeling a bit fed up with the whole thing

stac14 · 29/07/2009 13:26

Hey jlo Welcome to the thread. I didnt get scanned but did have cd 21 bloods and then bloods on cd 28 and cd35 so I could start provera again , think there is still a chance you may ovulate. What you been diagnosed with? I have pcos and am waiting to get an echovist scan to ensure no tube blockages.

How is everyone today? xx

JLO26 · 29/07/2009 11:52

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this board, i have starting clomid at 50mg from day 2 - 6. I am currently on day 12 and had a scan this morning, no signs of ovulation. Having a progesterone test on day 21. has anybody been in this siuation and actually ovulated?

If it does not work this month, i have to up the dose to 100mg. Has anybody had any successes with clomid?

Been trying for a baby for a year and miscarried last october. Lots of friends are having babies. I just want to be pregnant

fifi08 · 29/07/2009 11:26

morning everyone..

dig test positive.. dear Lord, the clomid may have actually worked..

Atilla, you surely are the definition of an expert patient.. i agree completely with what you say about unexplained infertility.. in my experience with the NHS unless you go about gaining not just the same but MORE info than the "professionals" you encounter you will be lost in the system.. for me it took me a good six months to realise that the clinic i initially attended was in no way going to treat our case any differently to anyone else not that i want "SPECIAL TREATMENT" i just mean they seem to have a schedule set out where they dictate what happens next and when and it doesn't matter if you can prove you can skip a step because it's not relevant to your case it falls on deaf ears, you just join the conveyor belt and that's that.. i arrived at the clinic with all my bloodtests done through my GP i thought it would save time, but was asked to repeat them ALL!!!! so that they could be on their computer system as they had no way of inputting tests done externally to their hospital!!! i asked for clomid for over a year and was declined, told to keep trying, waited for appointments that were 6-7 months apart for updates, saw a different person every time who read my notes for the first time once the consultation had begun, wasting my time by making simple mistakes and not even listening to what i was saying half the time.. and at one point i had actually slipped off their list and if i hadn't rung up to enquire what was the status of my case i'd still be waiting! and no apology! and after an 8 month wait (and that was the last time i attended that clinic)the day i attended the clinic they had to pull in novice staff to cope with a larger than usual clinic and an emergency that had kept the more experienced staff in theatre.. fair enough these things happen but the doctor who saw me was younger than me her hands shook and couldn't read the consultants handwriting on the report he had made when he had reviewed our case as to what the next step should be.. she then suggested i take metformin first as it worked the same way as clomid.. as nicely as possible i explained the difference to her while trying to hide my horror and shock and she quickly left the room to "ask some one else's opinion" .. i mean how can you have confidence in a system like that? it was the most disheartening and frustrating experience of my life.. in the end we felt we had no other choice but to go to a private clinic and the sad facts of it all is when you have a credit card (although with not much credit!)you ask for whatever you want and get it straight away..

and finally all this might, just might, be over.. or beginning ..fingers crossed

xxxxx

The most common tests that tend to be omitted are:-

Adequate x-rays of the uterus which may show abnormalities not otherwise seen at laparoscopy.

Hysteroscopy - telescope inspection of the inside of the uterus which may occasionally show abnormalities not seen otherwise

Repeated sperm counts over several weeks and months to make sure there is no subtle abnormality

Testing the sperm in special media such as swim up testsvelocity testing. However, when they are done, they often uncover a hidden cause for the suppposed unexplained problem

Thorough hormone tests to detect abnormalities of male hormone or early falls in progesterone

Scanning of the ovaries to see if follicles really are developing and there are no sign of polycystic ovaries.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 29/07/2009 09:10

wishinandhopin,

Unexplained infertility is infact no diangosis at all; it simply means that they have failed to find out what is wrong. Sometimes is is a "diagnosis" given when both parties have not been adequately investigated.

I am wondering why he has put you on clomid; I would be looking now to get a second opinion.

Will post up a list of tests that are often missed out.

stac14 · 28/07/2009 22:19

good luck fifi will keep fingers crossed for you

Hey *claire sounds like you had a nice relaxing holiday, when you due to test?

clwc not long till friday, I'm next week wish it would blood hurry up lol

Hey wishin I left you a message on the other thread but think I left it for kiwikat got there too late though, you've already spoke to your cons. I don't use opks cos of the pcos gives a false reading.

Hows everyone else? xxx
