mirina coil

I had a mirena and it was brilliant. It hurt having it put in and then the next 24hours I had period type cramps. Then I bled lightly for a week. I had spotting for six months, on and off, around the time of my period. For the next 3 1/2 years I had no periods. AMAZING! Then I had it taken out in June, had a bit of a withdrawal bleed, a month later I had a period and now I'm ttc.
It's different for everyone. I think if it works for you it can be the best from of contraception (I had an implanon and hated it, have also been on the pill)

had the marina after a D and C due to miscarrage of twins since then i have had headachs which i never get mood swings (not sure if this is due to not dealing with loss or coil) im considering getting the copper one fitted instead head had been murdering for weeks now :(

yes I too have been a victim of the mirena, had it put in June 09 post op for prolapse, have been a nutter ever since, mood swings, bloated, weight gain, crying at everything, tired all the time, but!!!! got lighter periods lol. Having it removed at Dr advice on the 22nd Jan and i cant wait. so want to be "normalish again" good luck to you all still suffering, would rather have a few days stuck home with heavy periods than feel like an alien xxxx

I had my coil fitted in Jan this year after 5 years of horrendous heavy periods resulting in a blood count of 8.
It was fantastic for 5 months and,to me ,seemed to settle straight away.
just spotting,which was a miracle to me after all the flooding and 2 week periods....
and hardly any pain...no sore boobs either...
however ,at the end of June I started with chronic back pain,aching hips and an awful dull ache in the tops of my legs....
then the motheR of all periods....[SHOCK]
I actually thought I was haemorraging........it was worse than ever before.
I went to the docs,...."see how you go on next month"....he said....{I think I,d have bled to death by then.
the prospect of another 2 week period and PMT made me cry all weekend..I felt wretched.
I saw the nurse,who could still feel the threads...but said I needed to be referred as I was losing far too much blood.
even went to a and e after sitting on the loo nearly all day and going through 14 super towels.....passing about 10 large clots in one day {sorry TMI}
they sent me home with crappy mefamenix acid
Eventually after 2 weeks,I went to family planning,who were wonderful...
the Doctor exclaimed," oh my word,Its hanging out of your cervix!"
she removed it and put me a new one in...which,I must admit,did hurt....no painkillers....{well hard!!!}
but it was worth it....
There is a chance this one may fall out,but I feel even for 5 months peace it is worth it.
I doubt they will keep putting new ones at that rate though....I think they are £90 a time.
I would recommend the Mirena to anyone....but the magic word is perseverence.

i had the mirena coil.. it was awful for the first nine months.. then everything settled down and periods stopped..

After 2and a bit years though the hormones started to disagree with me.. (this is why I cant take the pill..) so I had it removed.. i was pg with in 6weeks of having it removed.

After years of heavy, painful periods and embarassing "flooding", and numerous different pills, the only thing that has sorted me out is the mirena coil. I have had the coil for 8 years (on No.2) and have had no bleeding for about 7 1/2 years, no mood swings or weight gain. Generally kept well.
Recently married we are planning to start "trying" for a baby in the coming months and my doctor has informed me that my normal fertility will return to normal immediately after the coil is removed. Fingers crossed... If lucky enough to conceive, will definately have the coil again in the future.

hi im new to the site. i had a marina coil fitted in jan 08, i had no problems at all when i had it in, i was very happy with it. i had it removed on the 17th april due to a change of heart. we are now trying for baby number 4, i have had two normal peroids and am now suffering with mood swings, back ache, head ache, very tender boobs, but have done negative tests. is anyone else having problems ??

I had the mirina coil inserted last may. Prior to this I was having very heavy periods for about 2yrs. I had read some horror stories about the miina coil before I had it fitted. I was very apprehensive. Within 4 weeks I had made 4 visits to the doctors to have it removed. I was advised to try it a little longer but it was my choice and if I wanted it removing then they would do that also. The consultant told me it would take 6 months before I would see any benifit. At first I felt worse pain heavy bleeding moody weight gain. I did persevere with the coil and am I glad I did. my periods have become regular very light pain free. I am not saying it is for everyone but when I read all the bad experiences of other people before having it fitted it left me very negative. It has been a positve experience in the long term and the medical staff were exceptional and did listen to what I wanted. They were prepared to remove it if I was not happy. Perserverence was the best outcome for me.

hi i had to coil taken out on the 21st of april a few days later i had a period well i think it was a period i was bleeding for a couple of days not had a period since i was due to have 1on the 23rd of this month still waiting bn feeling dizzy for these past couple of days and im getting stomach cramps but no bleeding could i be preganat.we are trying.!!

fluffybunnyfeet how did you no you had overlated i havent bleed since the 14 of june had marina taken out on 17 but still neg

hi this is my first time on here i had the marina coil out on the 17 of june and am 3 weeks late but a negative test has any one got court so soon after having the coil removed

pinkladie - They told me to check my threads every month! DH can't feel them but I can.

Maybe thats what it is.... perhaps you need a new coil??

Toothache, never been able to feel my threads, and nor has my dh! Never had any of these symptoms for the last 4 years, do you think its ready to come out?

Thanks Rachey . I didn't have any periods at all when it was fitted. Still had the mood swings when I would have been due on. I have tried to use this as an indicator etc for when my period should have been due but that has been completely blown out of the water! Apart from feeling incredibly tired in the afternoons I have noticed my boobs are much bigger, hubbies v. happy but he doesn't have to carry them around all day!
My kids are 16, 14, 11,8 and 3 1/2. Three boys and two girls . My eldest is sitting his GCSE' and wants to become a doctor...so hold on girls he may be available for future information!!

Pinkladie - There is at least one MN'er who conceived with the Mirena Coil in!! I don't know if it had fallen out and she hadn't noticed though. Are your threads still there? It is highly unlikely that you are pregnant though.

Hi to everyone, I'm new to mumsnet and would like to share my experience of the mirena! had it fitted in july 2001, it was very painful, took painkillers for the first day, and the pain soon subsided. I had constant spotting for about the first 6 months, then had nothing at all and no pain, didn't like the fact that i didn't know when i was on my period, other than feeling v emotional! Did feel paranoid about being pregnant but after many negative pregnancy tests did feel happier and its great to have spontaneous sex without the worry! Nearly 4 years on I'm not so happy, at the moment i'm suffering with lots of pregnancy like symptoms- sore breasts, sickness, headaches, dizziness, frequent going to to the loo, and am paranoid that i'm pregnant, after having 2 children already and deciding not to have anymore i'm terrified of being pregnant again! Is there anyone on mumsnet that has concieved whilst on the mirena, if not does anyone no the chances of this happening!

You could be! I'm sure it wouldn't be long anyway. Did you have periods while you had the coil in? How old are your kids?

I haven't had any bleeding or spotting at all Rach . I have become really tired about 2ish for the last three days, feel like i could sleep for England. Your reply has made me feel a little more positive that i could be. It's three weeks now and still no bleeding so here's hoping. One other thing what do all the abbreviations mean? trying to work them out but to no avail....Oh and congratulations!!

Hi fluffybunnyfeet (no.6 - wow, and I'm only no.4!)

I had a mirena coil for a year (only about 2 periods in that time - last one in November). I had it taken out on March 11th - had some heavy flooding with clots 3 days later and then again 2 wks after that (not really like a period at all, more like post-birth lochia but it only lasted a day or two - sorry if TMI!). I didn't notice ovulating at all (and I was looking! - I usually get a pain and plenty of fertile CM). 5 wks after the second bout of bleeding (I got a BFP! I could be about 10 weeks pregnant now or I could be less depending on when I ovulated - I have a dating scan in 2 wks to find out. I suppose I could have conceived less than 4 wks after it was taken out, I've been told there's no reason why you can't conceive straight away. You brave girl!

Hi new on here and trying for babe no6 . Had my mirena removed on the 17th May. Immediately started trying. Have not had any bleeding and ovulated Friday last week(in total agony) okay now. Has anyone ever conceived or heard of someone falling so quickly after having merina out.

IMO I don't think the mirena coil makes you put on any more weight than any other oral contraceptive - in fact it has a lower dose of progesterone than the mini pill because it's absorbed locally, so any symptoms should be less than the mini pill. It's no more painful to fit than a smear, but I did have quite bad cramping for a couple of days. The heavy bleeding lasted for a while but then it settled down and I had only 2 very light periods all year. I had it out to get pregant again (and conceived almost straight away) but I would have been happy to leave it for a few years. You can forget about it, dp could feel the strings now and again but it wasn't a problem. I suppose it's not for everyone.

i was thinking of having he mirena fitted ive just had my third baby and dont wont another for 4 to 5 years my gp recommended the mirena as i told her i had a good bit of weight to lose and thought the pill made me gain more and the depo ingection some people bleed or weeks on it she made the mirena sound great at first i was afraid it wouldhurt like hell now ive a thousand things on my mind
