New thread for all ttcers who want to moan etc...

Best of luck bayleaf. I feel a bit of an imposter posting here, as we're still at the stage of hoping that "conventional" methods will work! Still at least things are more optimistic in some ways - cycle up to 27 days this time, after several which were only 15/17 days each, so there's probably a chance now at least.

Mum2Toby · 09/05/2003 20:29

Hi Nerthus!! Welcome to Mumsnet..... Good luck.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!! How late are you??

bayleaf · 09/05/2003 20:23

Hi there Nerthus and welcome to Mumsnet - I'm glad you're finding it useful so far.
I know exactly how you feel as I ended up trying for 2.4 years for dd ( all sorts of reasons - I had 3 miscarriages for one thing) and now have been trying for 20 months for a second one. If you can be bothered to read all the ''trying to conceive'' threads from beginning to end ( esp the first one) there are quite a lot of useful links and tips that I wish I'd known from the start.
I'm now going to talk ''ivf'' to those in the know ......
My date of Tuesday 13th is looking likely to be postponed as I'm hoping to go for a blastocyst FET on the FRiday.
OK translation for the rest of you...
Standard ivf procedure is to collect eggs, fertilise them and then put them back a couple of days later. One possible variant is to leave the embryos for another 3 days until they become 'blastocysts'( have no idea what it means other than it's a later stage in their development! I think by then they're 32 cell embryos but the science of it rather passes me by)
The down side of doing this is that many don't make it that far so if you don't have many embryos it's a non starter - and as not all that many are done the figures for success are unreliable - but it does look like it increases the chances of success - and ''logic'' implies that it is the weaker ones that are more likley to perish so by doing it you are maximising your chances of a strong one being put back.
It's a bit scarey doing it this way - but I fancy an ''all or nothing'' shot at it rather than 2-3 separate normal FETs using the 13 embryos up bit by bit - at least this way I don't have to put my life on hold for the next 6 months.
They're going to defrost them on Tuesday and tell me how they do ( it only takes 30 mins to defrost them)and depending on how many survive the thaw they'll either replace them as normal non blastocysts on the wednesday or as blastocyst ( God willing) on the Friday of next week. Just for fun I've got my interview for the job share head of department role on the Thursday! ( I'm the only applicant so not too scarey tho!)
I'm now on 6 HRT tablets a day ( normal dose 1) and I am MUCUS woman !!! Believe me you have never seen - or would want to see- so much mucus in you life.
Lucky WWW isn't reading this thread anymore!

Hi Everyone

I've just joined Mumsnet. Not a mum yet but longing to be one, been trying to get pregnant for ages, have been reading some of the 'ttc' posts, also the 'late period negative pregnancy test' ones as that's the situation I seem to be in at the moment. Just tearing my hair out with the am-I-aren't-I question going round and round in my head till I think I'm going demented when a helpful pregnant friend told me about this site a few days ago. Just wanted to say how amazing it is to read about everyone else's experiences. It's so helpful. Thank you so much!

bunny2 · 08/05/2003 21:37

Thanks everyone. Dh and I did have a long talk late last night. We have lots of other pressures on at the moment. He is not working right now and spends his time fretting about his next job. We are moving aswell so more stress there. I told him tearfully and angrily how I feel about ttc and I think we are going to try and be a bit more supportive of each other. Here's hoping.

bayleaf · 08/05/2003 20:24

Yep - Josie's experience is pretty much what I'll get from dh - except that he'll be pleased by a positive as it means we can STOP spending £££ on ivf and spend them on nice stuff instead - the baby will be a complete incidental!
He could not be more bessotted with dd but gave me a really hard time before she was born as he really wasn't keen on having kids and was ''putting up with it for me''.
Even now and knowing how much he loves dd he is ''having another cos I want one''.
last time I was TERRIFIED that I'd end up a single mum - this time I'm certain he'll be besotted eventually but it's a bummer that I get to put up with this lack of interest etc now just because he can't make a leap of faith and accept that he doesn't dote on dd just because she is a miraculously lovely, special girl ( tho of course she is!)- it's just because she is HIS and any other child will be the same!!!

bunny2- sorry things are not well with you and dh at the moment. It's true that ttc does put a terrible strain on your relationship and I'm not sure that there's a great deal you can do in your situation other than try to talk yourself round by remembering that you're bound to be feeling more anxious/miserable/desperate etc. than him simply by virtue of the fact that you're a woman . Sorry it sounds a bit Tammy Wynette ( he's just a man) but I'm not sure how else you can approach it.

When I got pregnant with dd and showed dh the positive test, his immediate words were " God, I'm so unlucky" simply because I'd said that if the FET failed we could go on a holiday to Majorca , and also because he knew he wouldn't be getting any more sex for the next 9 months. I was appalled that he felt that way, but of course he now loves his little girl and I'm sure that he wouldn't swap her for a holiday in Majorca ( altho' he does still moan about the sex thing! ).

elliott · 08/05/2003 09:21

jane101, sorry no luck this month and hope you are able to go for it next month.
Bayleaf, hope scan goes ok and good luck for 13th.

Lots of luck to everyone else too.

mindy · 07/05/2003 23:17

bunny2 - not much to add but sypmpathy - I had ivf/icsi for our ds and dd and I remember becoming quite introverted at the time, just feeling I had to focus on getting pregnant, dp was supportive but I think trying to conceive is stressful as it starts to take over your life, sorry this isn't much help, but wishing you good luck.

bunny2 · 07/05/2003 21:31

I'm spending far too much time popping back to Mumsnet but here I am again. Ttc is putting a big strain on my relationship with dh. We always promised we would be supportive and keep communicating but recently I think we are drifting. I cant help but resent the fact that he is less committed to conceiving than I am. Today we have avoided conversation and shunned each other, just like my parents always do. Help, I dont want us to fall apart but the resentment is building up.

josiejump · 07/05/2003 20:27

Hi Bayleaf, yes am quite new to mumsnet but addicted already ( and no, haven't read that thread so won't get paranoid ). Spent some time thinking last night about all the things I did when ttc, such as watching what I ate and drank, taking some exercise, carrying a lucky charm about everywhere with me (!) and countless other weird and wonderful things, but one thing I did enjoy was a fortnightly session with a reflexologist-if nothing else, it was lovely and relaxing. Whether or not it made any difference I don't know ( didn't do it before FET ) but if you've got time to get a bit of pampering in before the 13th, I'd say go for it!

bunny2 · 07/05/2003 18:38

Bayleaf - I thought the doc was a bit dismissive too. However a blood test should show PCOS shouldnt it??? I have been looking at low g.i. diets as a way to lose a bit of weight (low cal diets dont work and lots of carbs do lead to weight gain with me) but I dont suppose there is any wirtue in starting one until I have a confirmation or not as the case may be. Good luck on the 13th (ds 3rd b'day too so maybe a good day for us both )

So glad I have this for support

dot1 · 07/05/2003 16:17

Hi Janz,

My cycle's normally 28 - 30 days, but I tend to get all the ovulation signs - mucus etc. early - usually between days 9 - 12, so this is slightly later, but I wasn't too surprised.

Ah well, here's hoping for June...

JanZ · 07/05/2003 14:53

Dot1 - if it's any reassurance, the fertility expert on Babyworld says that a cycle of less than 24 days is not likely to be fertile. So if you ovulated on Day 8, it's unlikely that the "rest" of your body would have been ready anyway! So maybe it's a blessing in disguise, as you would only have been disappointed in 2 weeks time.

Is your cyle normally very short? Maybe it's just your drugs kicking in and next month you'll be back to a more normal - and fertile - cycle, and your donor can be prepared!

dot1 · 07/05/2003 09:13

Hello!

Feeling slightly better today - resigned to waiting another month. Yes Bayleaf, the one good thing is that the medication - Metformin - must be kicking in - I couldn't believe the line I got on the OPK!! So maybe I'll get strong lines every month and stand more of a chance anyway..!

Bunny - I've got PCOS - confirmed by the 21 day blood test - and I haven't got facial hair!! I also have regular periods, which is atypical. But I am big (although trying to get smaller!) and have always had a real problem with acne, which is another symptom. You don't have to have all the symptoms - definitely ask for a 21 day progesterone test if you're at all worried. I'm now on Metformin, and it's hopefully doing the trick to get me ovulating.

Good luck Bayleaf - not long to wait!! Jane - sorry it's another month for you aswell to have to wait...

Meanwhile this month holds lots of excitement for me because we've got a court date for me to get parental responsibility for our ds!! Quite nervous as we've got to go to court, and we're not sure what to expect - in fact I think I'm going to start another thread somewhere else to see if anyone else knows what might happen!

bayleaf · 06/05/2003 21:54

Hi Josiej- I don't thnk we've ''met'' before have we? Are you new? ( sorry if you've been reading the oldies/newbies thread I don't have an 'agenda' in asking!!!)It's lovely to hear a positive ivf story and to have good vibes from someone who know about all the hassle involved.

Dd wasn't ivf - we're ivf/icsi and dh seemed to be fine before just now he's not and I'm too old to wait and see if he gets better.
I'm feelig quite positive about the FET as

  1. my clinic ( the Park in Nottingham) is excellent and has the best results outside London's top place and their FET results are now 20 something percent per cycle ( ivf 30%)
  2. I know more people who have got pregnant thru ivf in inauspicious situations - eg one embryo replaced/ low quality/FET - than I do from good quality ones! Jane101 - you sound very stoical - I'm impressed! AS you say tho, a set back isn't as bad ( or as expensive!) as a fail and on natural cycles next month does come round reasonably quickly.

Hi boogs ... yup I do have a 'thing' ... I like to write and I am currently in the process of writing a book!!!! So I will concentrate on that ... great idea!
This thread does make me feel so lucky that I am not suffering from PCOS or anything like that and that I already have DS without having years of IVF etc ...
Thinking of everyone here ........ love Ghosty XXXXX

josiejump · 06/05/2003 20:48

Bayleaf, wishing you all the best on the 13th. My dd is a "frostie" baby and my twins the result of IVF. I agree with the idea that mental attitude is important. The boys were our 4th attempt at IVF ( plus many FET cycles too) and I'd reached the point where I'd had enough and said to DH that if it didn't work that time I wasn't going to go through it again. I really had very little hope of it working and was beginning to plan our lifetime of travelling the world together and getting rich! I have to say that I only did the pg test to prove to my Mum that I wasn't pg, but that positive result was probably the happiest day of my life.

Similarly, with the FET, I didn't hold out too much hope as the clinic only had a 3% success rate. Again, a big surprise and I honestly can't believe how lucky we've been.

I'll be thinking of you on the day and sending positive thoughts your way.

Jane101 · 06/05/2003 20:47

Bayleaf and elliot, thanks for thinking of me, but unfortunately we're not going ahead this month, as I'm ovulating on the wrong side again. I'm disappointed, but not terribly upset. It's not as bad as an actual failed attempt.

Bayleaf, I hope everything goes well for you this time.

bayleaf · 06/05/2003 20:08

Bunny your GP does seem a bit daft as many people who are Polycystic ( or more precisely have PCOS ) don't have ALL the symptoms- I've ofen wondered if I have PCOS - but my consultant has said it's not a big deal if I do or not and plenty of people who are PC do seem to get pregnant OK.
I have read ( on here as well as else where that a low glycemic index diet can help if you are - (see www.mendosa.com for details of glycemic ratings if it means nothing to you)
The blood test ( presumably a day 21 test ) is a good start tho.

Hi all. Big hugs to those having a frustrating time.Would a holiday be possible for anyone? Might be good to take minds off ttc for a little while and to get refreshed? There's some great deals out there at the mo although I appreciate the difficulties (impossibilities?) in travelling at short notice with littluns.
Ghosty I reckon going on the pill to regulate your cycle would be a step forward. Not only would you feel more in control (indirectly) of you cycle/fertility, it would also force you to put ttc on the back-burner. Your dr's probab right about the stress being counterproductive, so this would benefit you in the mid-term and possibly long-term if it results in a pgcy. I know it seems like a few months is 3 wasted cycles and/or wasted time but it would be an investment.
Have you got any hobbies or projects you can immerse yourself in (apart from ds!) to tide you over? I've been doing alot of reading and planning our new decor, complete with working drawings! Nothing life changing but I have found it's taken my mind off the m/c, and whatever is gonna happen next.
Hope this helps you decide what to do. Remenber to go with your instincts. xxx

bunny2 · 06/05/2003 14:41

I went to see the Doc today. She said she would normally send me away for another 6 months but due to my old age (37) better start immediately. Nice to know being old is useful in some way. Thursday I am having blood tests to see what my hormones are doing. I insisted I have all the signs of PCOS but after scrutinizing my face she declared no probelm with facial hair (has she heard of Jolen I wonder?) and therefore probably dont have PCOS.

quackers · 06/05/2003 13:42

I am sorry to hear this Dot!
Smiley face smiley face smiley face!!

bayleaf · 06/05/2003 13:00

Oh what a bummer Dot - a month seems such a long time doesn't it? Especially when you had already done ''being patient''. Really can appreciate how you feel ( in the old days, trying for dd, dh was often sent abroad at not much notice).
On the plus side it does seem like your ov is going OK now - are you on medication?
