Very confused - can you have a period and be pregnant?

I am very confused! On day 8 of my normal cycle (ie 4-5 day period) I used a digital ovulation test and it came up with a but then did it for the next 6 days. My persona told me that I was ovulation on day 9 and 10 (second month of use). I called up the helpline to find out why so many smiley faces and they told me it is a possibility I could be pregnant (this would be wonderful!) So I have done 2 cheap pregnancy tests and they have both come out as positive (all this in the last hour so still in shock!). But I have only just had a period. Is it possible to have a period while pregnant as surely day 15 of a cycle would be too early to tell normally??

ANother, my "period" just seemed normal but I have always been very lucky with very light periods anyway and no morning sickness (so far and none for the last pregnancy). Now getting very tired (having naps at lunchtime!!) - I think it must be purely psycological as I'm sure I would not have felt tired had I not found out I was pregnant! The metallic taste sounds like a sign...

I have a book that says that implantation happens 10-11 days after fertilisation. I bled for 2 days after getting +ve pg result on DS3.
Prunegirl, I think you should do a test!

mmmmchocolate · 23/02/2005 16:07

Some one told me when i bled:

The hormone that triggers you period is shut off whilst your pregenant but if you carry a girl sometimes the hormones they produce trigger them off again.

How much truth is in that i don't know as i know people with boys who bled slightly but i gave birth to a girl x

Have just finished period, which came on right day.
It was very heavy for 2 days needing to change a super plus tampon every 4 hours. Then it stopped. I have still got sore breasts. The soreness usually goes once AF arrives but the bit under each arm is still tender and I'm aware of them IYSWIM.

I have had the metallic taste in my mouth since about 5 days before period started.

Those of you who have had periods while pg, were they particularly light, or did they seem normal? Is it possible that despite heavy bleeding I could be pg, do you think?

skerriesmum · 23/02/2005 15:40

Yup, my sil had them which is why her ds1 was a complete surprise (up to the day she had him!) Congratulations!

bozzy · 23/02/2005 15:37

Goodluck Prunegirl... I am still in shock! Have now done 4 tests (all positive!) Waiting for doc results (takes 5 days at lab!!) but I think I have to be! Not sure why the bleeding happens - doc was trying to explain about the egg implanting but lost me after that!!!!

Prunegirl, you could very well be pregnant... the doctor said it is quite common and so many women get caught out with their dates because they thought they experienced a period. The only reason I checked was because my ovulation kit was going a bit crazy! Have to take a test for the lab today - told DH last night in the kitchen and he lay down on the kitchen floor in shock! Very excited though - I haven't had my period since ds for 14 months due to having injection contraception, so had no idea if I was ovulating etc - very frustrating. So now very excited but slightly in denial still. Prunegirl, my period seemed relatively normal but I have only just started getting periods for a few months - think it was a bit lighter than normal but bang on period time. Goodluck. Thanks for everyone's messages!!

My gran had a baby at 47 after having full-on periods for 6 months. She started having problems with her stomach and bowels and it was only then it was discovered she was pregnant. She delivered a healthy son who is now a physician.

Twiglett · 21/02/2005 21:43

definitely at 6 weeks too prunegirl (I had it with DD and that's what they said at EPU .. that it burrows further around the time next period would have been due)

implantation bleeding normally happens around 6 weeks I believe (but wait to be corrected)

happymerryberries · 21/02/2005 18:41

My father was living proof that this is possible. His mother had a bleed every month during that pg!

I had rough periods for the first three months of pg - was always random and irregular anyways. But I have a lovely ds to show for it

COngratulations :c)

Just got back from the Doc's - I have to do a urine test in the morning and wait until Thurs for results.. but Doctor is convinced that if I have done 2 tests and they are positive then I must be pregnant.. the bleeding is called implantation bleeding ...and not my period (just as you have told me... still not convinced but mildly optimistic! The pregnancy tests are supposed to be 98% accurate - they just don't pick up pregnancy as quick as First Response....... fingers crossed..
