Freaking out here, not trying for a baby right now. My period is one day late and I did a test first morning urine, left it on the side while I had a shower, came back later in the day to a SOLID second pink line.
Did another one in a panic and there is nothing there?

Is there anything else that could cause such a strong second line like that ? Maybe it got a bit wet when I left it out ?? Confused and panicking and I need to know

PLEASE HELP freaking out

Thank you everyone . Another negative today so I’m thinking definitely just a weird test freaking me out for fun!!! As I said it could have got a little wet as I left it on the side so I’m thinking dye flooding as someone mentioned .

I still haven’t had my period which is making me a little twitchy still - 2 days late which is not unheard of for me but I’m usually no more than 30 days and today is 31. I am getting a bit of cramping though so maybe I’m worrying over nothing

Sorry should have made clear - negative tests

Edenmum2 · 23/09/2026 13:16

I had many tests when I was trying to conceive where a line would appear later in the day, they really are only reliable in the time window stated.

Only HCG will make the test line appear.

Sometimes an unimplanted fertilised egg will produce a little HCG on its way through, giving what people call “a chemical pregnancy”. There is/was an embryo which either did not continue to develop or did not implant (or both) which produced HCG but then you get your period. One of those situations when if you hadn’t tested you’d never know.

So unfortunately you’re in limbo waiting for either a repeat positive test or a negative test + period.

There are other things that produce HCG but they’re incredibly unlikely and not good news. If you’re pre-menopausal and sexually active it’s far more likely to be conception (that may or may not progress) than anything sinister.

Good luck with the wait.

I mean in theory only HCG can make a test line appear but in real life other things actually can. Flooding a test can cause the dye to run into the test line. Leaving the test a long time can cause an evaporation line and for blue dye tests these can be very deceptive. Asda and Morrisons tests so often show lines which aren’t real. I’ve even tested them myself when there’s been zero chance of pregnancy and there’s still a faint line.

@Whatthefisthis1 this is a really stupid question but is that definitely a pregnancy test and not an ovulation test? If it’s definitely pregnancy, I would wait 2 days and test again. But in all honesty with 2 absolute negatives I personally would be inclined to think it’s just a weird test. A chemical pregnancy does not go from a strong line to absolutely nothing in less than a day.

It could be a chemical. I've had this before. Only time will tell unfortunately. You may need to wait another day or two to confirm.

Thanks for sharing . Will have to see what happens tomorrow I guess

A positive that strong is very unusual for not pregnant, definitely keep testing. Hope you’re ok.

This was my first thought too which is why I freaked out !

Is it possible for anything else to cause a pink line like that?!

ISAR · 23/09/2026 06:53

Yes test with a morning urine which is concentrated.

Whatthefisthis1 · 23/09/2026 06:42

Gosh I’m still worried , even after two negatives. Should I test again in the morning ?

What made that line is HCG, which is most likely from an embryo.

It might be too early for the HCG concentration to be reliably high enough to register on a test the rest of the day (which is why they say to use first morning urine).

It might be that the embryo didn’t implant.

Either way, you’ll need to test again in a few days and if it’s still negative with no period you’ll need to see a doctor.

So - you would say the top one is most likely positive and not caused by anything else eg reading it too late or the strip getting a bit wet or something?

it seems strange a frer would be negative though as aren’t they very sensitive?

perhaps it didn’t implant as you say
sorry for the questions !
