PCOS - Metformin

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with PCOS, I have moved from England to Wales - I asked my doctor to prescribe me Metformin. My GP stated she cannot prescribe it but will refer me to a gynaecologist and also email them to see if they can give permission for me to start Metformin in the meantime. Annoyingly, my friend in England was prescribed it straight away.

Does anyone have any experience of this and know 1) how long I will roughly have to wait for a gynaecology appointment and 2) how long it will take them to get back to my GP about Metformin?

really hopeful Metformin will help regulate my cycles and allow us to conceive (we have been trying for well over a year now)

I also have PCOS been trying to conceive for a year and half. My GP asked an endocrinology consultant for advice about prescribing metformin, but unfortunately they advised against it, and my GP wouldn’t prescribe it either. I think it’s quite hit and miss in the UK when it comes to using it off-label for PCOS😞

I decided to start Mounjaro privately after hearing some really positive things about it for PCOS, as my periods had disappeared for around 8 months. Within a month of starting it, my periods came back, and I’m now ovulating and having regular monthly cycles! I literally swear by it for PCOS if you are able to get it! Good luck with everything!☺️X

Sorry for the delay! do you know why they advised against it? My GP is waiting for Gynae to get back to them, they rejected my referral but my GP thinks it was rejected with advice to start me on metformin. However, been waiting over 3 weeks to find out what Gynae has actually said in the referral letter! I have started it on my own now though as I’m sick of waiting, I purchased it from offline (legit pharmacy) but I have also purchased mounjaro and will start that this week! Good luck to you! 🥰

Im hopeful something positive happens, my next step is to go private if Gynae refuse to prescribe me it! Xx

They said my BMI wasn’t high enough but PCOS doesn’t just affect people with higher BMI’s, I just feel like they aren’t as clued up on it here! That’s amazing about the Mounjaro and do not blame you about getting it on private prescription I was also going to do the same 🤣

Yes that’s not true at all, you can have lean PCOS. I literally had to advise my doctor that my blood’s are consistent with PCOS and worked out my FAI for her, after she said my bloods were fine. She then agreed with me that I have PCOS! Shocking.

I have been prescribed metformin and folic acid today, finally!!

Oooh yay! good news Letrozole! I have heard really good things about that, my BMI is above 35 so I cannot be referred but hoping with mounjaro it’ll bring it down nicely and if I don’t catch by then, Letrozole will help! But finally getting somewhere after so long! So exciting for both of us! Always here if you need to offload or chat! :) Xx
