The impossible decision - a 3rd child?

Hello all!
First time poster here.
I have a 7 year old DD and almost 5 year old DS. I feel completely obsessed about having a 3rd child. I never thought I'd feel this way. When I had DS I threw everything away at every stage. I have no maternity clothes, baby clothes, bassinet has gone, car seat etc etc. I felt pretty sure I was done, I never expected to feel like this, particularly after all this time.
I'm torn between thinking I should just appreciate the two I have and wanting to add another member to the family. How does anyone make this decision?
The crazy thing is that I had two very traumatic births and had intense PND with my first and also a very mentally difficult pregnancy with my second. Both my kids are also going through different SEND journeys.
Me and DH have discussed it briefly but I'm scared to talk it through properly because I don't think he is on board and I'm scared to try to accept that that stage of my life is over.
I always wanted 3 kids, my family is small so I always wanted to create a larger one for myself.
I have many fears about it - I'm scared of another birth and any possible health problems for me or baby, I'm scared of PND, I'm scared of not being able to cope as I may have forgotten what the baby/toddler stages are like, I'm scared of the risks of disability, I'm scared of holding the other two back with a baby in tow and a big age gap.
Despite all of this I am thinking about it 24/7 and obsessing. I did feel like this before both of my children - does that mean it is hormonal? Will it pass? I almost wish the noise would stop and I could just be happy with what I have. But I can't stop imagining another member of our family. We could do it financially and we have the space.
How does anyone make this decision?
I would love to hear any kind of advice/feedback. Does anyone regret having a third child? I have no support and I'm a SAHM.. could I cope? Will I get pregnant and instantly regret this? Is the age gap a big issue? I'm at a complete loss honestly, any advice is appreciated.

In your situation I would enjoy the two I have and look at going back to work.
I have four and rearing children has been a long slog, they need you for much longer now.

minipie · 08/08/2026 23:54

If in doubt, don’t. You’ve given lots of good reasons NOT to have a third and only one reason TO - which is you have a hormonal urge. Not a good enough reason to outweigh all the cons IMO.

Ask yourself what happens if you had the third and then still wanted another? And another?

FunPartyIdeas · 09/08/2026 00:00

@ForPeachBee How old are you currently?

ForPeachBee · 09/08/2026 07:16

@FunPartyIdeas I'm 33 x

@minipie It's not just a hormonal urge, I love the idea of adding another personality to our family. I feel that with both at school I could really focus on baby too. I've always wanted 3 children and I don't agree that I would keep wanting more because I know how hard it was having a baby and a toddler, I wouldn't want to do that again and then my age starts to become a factor after that as well as money etc.

It’s possible you will cope fine but also consider your third could be twins. Yes you will have your large family but it could be restrictive to your existing children.

MixedBananas · 09/08/2026 09:53

Go for it. You can afford to and the kids are older and at school.
Ignore all the negativity.

FunPartyIdeas · 09/08/2026 11:04

@ForPeachBee The only thing I would say is have you considered how it will be in peri? I started feeling peri at 42 so say in another 10 years time your kids will be 17, 15 and 9/10. That's a lot.
I had my last at 39 - two other kids with my ex-husband but they only lived with me 50/50. My three are now 19, 16 and 6. The older two are self-sufficient, eldest at uni, but the little one is, well, little! I work a demanding job and now 45 when perimenopause is is full-swing and it's something I'd never considered!
However, I think you said you're a SAHM so it might be easier for you?
Having said that, being a SAHM would my idea of a complete nightmare!!
I have no regrets about making my now husband a dad and our LO is definitely his first and last. He is incredibly present; we share childcare and housework equally. And my older two being with their dad half of the time meant we could give lots of attention to our baby/toddler when they were away, whilst ensuring we made time for them when they came home.
Would I have had a third under different circumstances? I don't think so. Ages of around 9, 7 and newborn full-time will be incredibly hard. Then there's peri/meno on top in about a decade. How involved is dad?

Stripybag52 · 09/08/2026 11:13

If you feel your circumstances are right I say go for it. I had my third at 37 when my older two were 5 and 3. Id always had it in my head I wanted three but I still had a wobble about whether it was right for us or not. In the end it was something I read on here that swayed me, something like you could end up regretting not having a third but you would never regret having that third baby when they are here. And its true, I would have regretted not having her. She's completed our family and after her I knew I was done. I love having three, its crazy but so much fun.

sweetchill · 09/08/2026 11:15

Your age is in your favour, I don’t think the gap is crazy big, sounds like money would be ok. Like you say, older ones will be at school so you’d get lots of time with baby and to try and keep on top of things.

The bit that gives more pause is your children’s SEND and what the details of that - will you be able to be as available to them as they need, would they cope with the challenges of a baby/toddler in their space.

I think just talk to your DH. He will perhaps see it a bit more objectively than you and hopefully you can work it out together.

FunPartyIdeas · 09/08/2026 18:21

And, most importantly, your DH needs to want a third child too.

ForPeachBee · 09/08/2026 20:08

@FunPartyIdeas very good points. Isn't it cruel that nature tends to align teenage hormones with menopause?! DH is amazing and does all he can to help me despite having a demanding job which involves him being away alot. Obviously the most important next step is for us to have a proper talk about it. I've been scared to have 'the chat' because I don't want to let go of the hope I guess but I would never bring a child into the world who wasn't wanted by both parents.

@sweetchill yes I do worry about this. My son has gone from being obsessed with babies to saying they are annoying because all they do is cry. They both struggle with noise and my daughter definitely took the birth of her brother badly but she sadly had to witness some unpleasant things. She is an amazing sister though and I have no doubt that she would love being the oldest and helping mummy. Thankfully they have great support at school and are doing well but I do feel scared for the future and how their needs with change as they get older

We agonised but decided not to as SEND journey here too and we were concerned about having a third dc with really significant needs. Ten years on when we chat about it DP and I say thank god we didn’t have another one.

Viviennemary · 09/08/2026 20:18

Nobody can make this decision. Only you and your partner. I think affordability is a big factor these days. Size of your house. Your jobs.

ForPeachBee · 09/08/2026 20:21

@Onceuponatimethen that's our biggest fear too, I don't know how to get past that one. Thank you for sharing x
