Conceived several days before ovulation, should I expect another girl?

Somehow we have conceived a complete suprise baby at about 4-5 days prior to ovulation. We have 2 girls - 4 and 2.

I never thought of it before but I'm now reading a lot online that only girl X sperm would survive that long to fertilise the egg.

Should I expect a girl again?

Anyone else only do the deed that far away from expected ovulation (and not again) and still have a boy?

mine was a girl after two boys

ok here is how you can work out what you are having, follow this step by step or it may not work:

  1. get a glass of orange juice
  2. then a glass of milk
  3. put both glasses out with your breakfast tomorrow
  4. wait 4 months and have a scan
  5. ask the person doing the scan

Two of mine were conceived the day after my period finished, both were boys.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 02/08/2026 19:38

No, this is a theory with no proven evidence. It may be a girl, it may be a boy. Thankfully it’s not something we can control

I fell pregnant whilst still on my period, 32 day cycle
DC3 is definitely a very wonderful boy

wow, how is that possible. i guess you mean you did the deed during, but then it must have survived until ovulation. but thats one mean feat for any swimmer!

Op surely this can’t be a serious question

MDDR · 02/08/2026 23:15

Conceived both of mine on the day of ovulation - A boy and a girl.

Pearandavocado · 02/08/2026 23:22

I conceived on day 8 of my cycle and had a daughter. I have read of this theory before but didn't know if it was true. Guessing that if it was accurate many more people would be trying to predict the sex of their baby.

Rangder · 03/08/2026 07:27

It’s 50/50. You’ll get people absolutely certain that they conceived a girl because it was 5 days before ovulation. You can find all the “Yes all of mine were girls all conceived really early before ovulation!!” Then you’ll get the people with the absolute opposite experience. You can find people online to support whatever experience you want. But the reality is it’s 50/50.

onesinglepringle · 03/08/2026 07:29

(Edit as I realise you must have meant the day you had sex was 5 days before ovulation)

It's 50/50 whether it's a boy or girl, whenever you conceive.

I have 2 boys. One conceived on ovulation, once conceived 5 day before.

There is an enduring myth that X sperm live longer than Y sperm. This was popularised in the 1960s by Shettles, and based on the hypothesis that because X sperm have slightly more genetic material that they must be bigger, and therefore swim slower but also be more robust and take longer to degrade. Modern imaging techniques have entirely disproved this - X and Y sperm are actually an identical size and shape and therefore neither has an advantage on terms of either speed or endurance.

Sorry! You will have to wait until your anomaly scan!

I thought it was impossible, leading me to not even twig I was pregnant until 18 weeks 😵‍💫
only explanation I have is we flew the morning after DTD and maybe flight somehow mucks up ovulation ???
we were on holiday with DS1 and 2 in one room, we definitely did not shag at all
I know with certainty when I conceived

I really didn’t want another child, DS1 was very difficult and I was fighting for a Statement for him. My marriage was abusive and toxic. We had big financial issues. I was under so much pressure and really struggling, my doctor was willing to sign off a late abortion due to my mental state.

DC3 is now 19 and the best surprise I’ve ever had, he is a gift. sometimes life just happens hey

Op surely this can’t be a serious question

If I say it wasn't then that would make my post ragebait. in honesty it was half serious ... I'm quite a logical person, engineer by nature. I need facts and figures, science and explanation. BUT a part of me has no control over this, not much patience, so i guess i try and find something solid, even in places where there is no logic - early symptoms, this shettles theory, etc. I know deep down there shouldn't be any.

OP if you like facts and figure then there's about a 50% chance your baby will be a boy!

Congratulations on your pregnancy
