Conceiving without orgasm

Lavendar01 · 06/07/2026 18:36

Been ttc for 4 years now no luck, ivf failed too. There are some concerns around egg and sperm quality but we have no choice but to trust that it can still happen naturally.

However we only do it around the week we "think" i am ovulating, my cycles are quite regular (confirmed through lh strips and bbt rise historically), perhaps a few in the year that are not. And even the few times we try, we struggle, especially me I can't orgasm and have read this happens to push the sperm into the cervix.

When you conceived, did you orgasm, if so, was it before or after partner ejaculated?

I sincerely hope this isn’t a requirement because I definitely did not get the memo 😂 Conceived my DD without an orgasm and, as far as I’m aware, my cervix simply had to get on with the job without my assistance 🙈
Please don’t add “must orgasm at precisely the right moment” to the already frankly ridiculous TTC to-do list!
Sending you lots of luck after such a long road 🤞❤️

If the problem is egg or sperm quality no amount of orgasming will help though. I TTC for years. We tried EVERYTHING. Normal sex. Me orgasming first. Me orgasming after. Me orgasming both before and after. Me not orgasming at all. Trying artificial methods to try and get the sperm higher up. Then the before and after and both and not at all tricks again. Sex daily. Sex twice a day. Sex every other day. Sex every third day. Using OPKs. Temping. Not doing any of that. Alternating these things every month. None worked for us because it was likely an egg quality issue. (Well actually the only one time we conceived I’d actually had flu the week before and we had sex once the day before ovulation with no orgasm for me because I was knackered and wanted to sleep. It ended in MMC though)

Sorry for your loss hun. May i ask if you were able to conceive again? I feel I could have written this post myself. We've tried everything, even home insemination. We both seem to have respective issues, which is why i believe its not worked.

I struggled to conceive despite tracking my cycles and I eventually fell pregnant when we had sex at a point when I thought I wasn't fertile. It happened at the same point in my cycle second time round when we only had sex once in a blue moon because DC1 was a terrible sleeper so I am absolutely certain of the date of conception. I must have been ovulating very early in my cycle just as my period finished, so by the time I thought I was fertile we'd missed the window. If I were you I'd relax a bit with the tracking, try to enjoy sex regularly and see what happens.

Edited

Would you have not know you were ovulating earlier, by calculating the days of cycle, as the luteal phase at most will be 14days?

Thats how I calculate if the ovulation is when I think it was, if mym period follows 13-14days after

Personally I think you need to find a clinic and/or tests that’ll actually investigate the specific issues you’ve highlighted and go from there.

Leopardspota · 14/07/2026 11:18

I struggled a lot to begin with and did lots of tracking. Then settled on every other day. Worked pretty quickly. Obvs all these stories are anecdotal! But if you’ve done allll the things you’re supposed to do, maybe stop tracking and just try to have fun every other day. I know it’s easier said than done, but maybe give yourself 2/3 months of just no dipping/ temping etc and then see what happens. It not, look into donor egg/sperm?

We conceived one other time naturally and twice via IVF. All ended in miscarriage. We were advised to try donor eggs but ultimately decided against it and while we’re not actively trying anymore (as in we don’t time sex) we have resigned ourselves to the fact we will remain childless now.

A few people have suggested opening up the ttc window to two weeks especially after the predicted ovulation date. Will be giving this a go.

Another thing I've read that may or may not be factual, but what if I have ovulated on the predicted day, and we then continue dtd in the tww, does the orgasm that causes the cervix and uterus to contract, impact the implantation?

have you thought about abandoning all plans and just doing it when the fancy takes you? Surely all this planning is tiring and stressful which certainly can impact a body

Cheese55 · 14/07/2026 12:28

Ive never heard of needing to orgasm before conceiving! Surely there would be a lot less babies if so.

Ignore the clap trap about orgasms. I mean that kindly. How would rape victims get pregnant and very young children if any of it were true

ImPamDoove · 14/07/2026 12:39

I don’t think anyone thinks it essential, but it also can’t hurt. Also, are people having sex without having an orgasm? Surely it’s part of the act?

Many women don’t orgasm during actual sex. They do with other methods though. And what the OP was asking was about the theory that during orgasm the cervix dips and helps the sperm move where it needs to go. So if you orgasm before your husband during foreplay (or even first during sex) then that theory wouldn’t work as the sperm isn’t there yet. But it isn’t really relevant anyway as orgasm is not required for conception.

I had cycles that could be anything from 17 days up to 41 days when trying to conceive so had no idea when was the "best time".

I read a pamphlet recommending the woman lie on her back with her legs up in the air afterwards. I tried it and was successful on the first attempt. A friend who'd also struggled to conceive her second baby tried it too and was successful.

I tried that as well for 3 years and was never successful.

I have read many times that one of the biggest difficulties in ttc (asides form any actual
medical or fertility problems) is not having sex often enough on a regular basis. You are much better off just relaxing and having sex as often as you can rather than getting hung up on dates and cycles which are stressing you out and making the whole thing a chore rather than an exciting and intimate time

I think you’re in the place where you’re questioning everything. Honestly this wouldn’t matter or not so please don’t think it’s your ‘fault’ if that makes sense? My advice would be to have a month off to relax the schedule, do it when you want to and if you want to, then the next month do it every other day. Ovulation tests never worked for me so we just did it every other day as that’s what the doctor advised was best (previously we were doing it every day which apparently doesn’t give you the best sperm). I never know which crazy theory worked for us in the end. Both times I conceived I tipped myself upside down for a while afterwards but I highly doubt that’s relevant, I just worried I’d blame myself if I didn’t try! Gosh we all do crazy things

True, its so easy to grt caught into every little variable.

Tipped upside down, by that do you mean legs raised up in the air? If so i've heard so many people on mumsnet share that the one time they did that they conceived. My question is, practicially, how would you do that? As soon as your partner pulls out its hard enough to keep the semen inside but then scooting to push legs up against the head of bed or wall, its alot of movement and all the semen would come out no?

No, that didn't work for me. I've always had a fairly regular cycle between 26-28 days but I seem to ovulate around day 8-10 based on when I've conceived meaning my luteal phase must be around 16-18 days. There's been a difference of 4-5 days between my due date based on my last period and the scan measurements both pregnancies. I've just googled it and a longer luteal phase can be an indicator of hormone imbalance which makes sense because I've since been diagnosed with endometriosis. If you're not trying to conceive earlier in your cycle and always waiting for your fertile window it's definitely worth giving it a go.

inkgirl · 14/07/2026 18:29

I didnt when I conceived my kids. Have you tried conceive plus lube? Tried 2 years for my eldest used that and fell pregnant first month using it.

tarheelbaby · 14/07/2026 18:40

We all know that abstinence is the surest way NOT to get pg. If you are only having sex a few times during one week each month, your chances of conception are seriously reduced, especially if you are worried about sperm/egg quality.

Most advice recommends DTD several times a week between periods, not just waiting until you think you might be ovulating. Bodies are all different and only having sex during a certain week really limits your chances.

I wasted 5 months having sex at the wrong time. The month we DTD earlier was the successful one. For DD2, I tested this theory and was first time lucky. (DH was a bit disappointed - he'd been looking forward to a 'long campaign')

If orgasms were required for conception, the planet would definitely be underpopulated.

We used that for a year, and nothing. Honestly, I’d leave it to the experts if you have been ttc for a long time and have been unsuccessful.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 14/07/2026 18:43

I never orgasm during sex. I have two children one conceived the second month of trying and one the first month after only trying 4 days during that month.

Afterwards just swivel round on your bum and put your legs up on the wall and lie flat on your back. Try and tilt your pelvis up a bit at times. I also used the conceive plus lube someone just mentioned. My eldest is nearly 4 and I remember this all so clearly, I wish you the very best of luck.

Oh wow, I thought it was only that girl from Bridgerton who thought this!! Anyway, I got pregnant both times without orgasm. I had twins when I had unprotected sex earlier in my cycle than I thought I could get pregnant.
