How likely is it to get pregnant from one instance of unprotected sex twice?

Hello! Embarrassed to be making this post but my dh and I made a stupid mistake 3 days ago. It was our first "date" since our dd was born nearly a year ago and we got a little too tipsy and, yeah, I'm sure you can guess what happened.

After checking my period app, I've now realised that it occurred the day before I probably ovulated. So even more idiotic of me to have not been keeping track of that. I'm now really worried that I'm going to find out I'm pregnant in two weeks. Our first dd was conceived in similar circumstances, one instance of unprotected sex and bam, pregnant. Clearly, we didn't learn our lesson.

We were going to start trying for baby #2 in ~6 months but getting pregnant right now would really get in the way of some big life plans that we have coming up. I know that no one can tell me but I'm panicking a bit. Surely the chances of one instance of unprotected sex resulting in a pregnancy twice are pretty low?? I'm grasping at straws here! Has anyone had something similar happen? And how did it turn out?

I had one spontaneous night of unprotected sex a couple of months ago, it was around ovulation time, took the MAP (but not until 70th hour after so to be fair it was cutting it very fine)
It didn't work, and i am now 8wks pregnant.
I would say though....what's 6mths?! Surely if you are wanting to try then it isn't too much of an issue to be pregnant now? TIming isn't always perfectly planned, but that's life.
Hope things go well for you whatever happens.

Best of luck x

whereisit1 · 11/10/2025 15:22

Eek congratulations I guess! Hope it all works out for the best. Every time I've been pregnant it's been first time of trying x

Welp, I've had a positive digital today. Thank you everyone for your comments.

Every person on earth was conceived from one instance of unprotected sex soooo😅

You cant have spent much time on the conception board if you believe that! Lots of babies born without any sex at all these days.

OP - a perfectly timed cycle of trying naturally (which you've inadvertently now done) has around a 20% chance of success per month of getting the average woman pregnant. So there is a very real possibility you will get pregnant from this, although it's more likely you won't from a purely statistical perspective.

If the coil really isn't a possibility then there is nothing more you can do this cycle now to prevent that chance. All you can do is discuss options with your husband should you get a positive test in a week or so. At least you'll know early. If you don't end up pregnant best thing to do is get on some contraception.

You had unprotected sex in your fertile window - twice. You are fertile and conceived very easily last time. Hope you still have your baby gear.

Even if you explain it’s an emergency? Are you anywhere near a Marie Stopes clinic?

No, we're not living in the UK currently. Services are much more limited and everything moves very slowlyyyyy.

Looks like map is out of the question too then. I definitely won't be able to get a coil fitted in the next two days.

It wouldn't be the end of the world but it would put some things on hold for a while.

Mortima · 03/10/2025 12:19

Obviously possible, but the odds are in your favour in that there is always more chance of not conceiving than conceiving, even if you have sex at the right time.

Do you have any idea how accurate your app might be, e.g. have you tracked your ovulation since giving birth, or get any physical signs? Only that my periods have definitely changed since having a baby, and I seem to be ovulating earlier than before (I notice more symptoms, and overall cycles are shorter). So best case scenario, you might have actually ovulated a couple of days sooner than your app predicted, which would mean you're probably in the clear.

Just a waiting game now though I think, good luck.

Hollyhobbi · 03/10/2025 11:49

My eldest is proof it can happen!

DiscoBob · 03/10/2025 11:47

I think it depends on what point of your cycle but at any point it is possible, just less likely.

Just take MAP.

hoohaal · 03/10/2025 11:46

2 of my kids were conceived when I’d only had sex once around ovulation, but hopefully not the case for you if that’s not what you want.

I think if you are, then I would probably keep the baby if you were planning on trying in 6 months anyway. Appreciate this could get in the way of some plans, but there’s no certainty that you will get pregnant again (if you are).

keep us updated!!

Happened to me. First time it was unprotected I was young and stupid (I terminated this pregnancy) 6 months later I slept with someone else for the first time since the last and I was on the pill and got pregnant again. Only slept once with them both ended up pregnant both times.

The statistics say there’s around a 10-33% chance (they usually just state 20% as a ballpark figure) of conception during ovulation. So there’s still a significant chance of not being pregnant. In fact, a higher chance of not being pregnant, than being pregnant xx

Just replying to correct myself. That’s during ovulation. The day before is 42%. So still a higher chance that you’re not, but the odds are less favourable.

Pleasegetmeacoffeesotired · 03/10/2025 08:39

Thanks, everyone. Yes, I know we've been very stupid here. I don't know what we were thinking tbh.

I was hoping to find some comfort in statistics, but, you're right that all I can do is get the map and wait.

I am in exactly the same position. We have 2 DC - first was conceived within 2 cycles and 2nd was from unprotected sex once the day before ovulation. Got a bit carried away a few days ago, the day before I ovulated. We definitely do want a 3rd and had a conversation about it a couple of months ago maybe starting to try after xmas, so not the end of the world by any means if it happened now but would also affect some plans we have for next year! See what happens in 2 weeks if AF arrives or not I guess.

ThatLilacTiger · 03/10/2025 09:13

Having unprotected sex just before ovulation is like the only way to get pregnant 'naturally' so I don't think the chances are low at all. It's literally how it's done.

Babies just kind of happen sometimes though. My daughter squeaked through when I wasn't looking and the timing was pretty crap (just started a new, more senior job) but whatever, fuck around and find out init. She's the best baby girl who ever lived and the light of my life now, so even if you are pregnant, you'll just work your life out around it and love them to bits no matter what.

Tillow4ever · 03/10/2025 09:09

Obviously if you are pregnant, you do have options open to you that don’t include continuing the pregnancy if you don’t want to. There’s no shame in making that choice if it’s the right one for you - and the earlier you make it, the easier it is from what I understand. It’s not something I’ve done myself, so I can’t give a personal perspective, I’m going on what I have read on here previously.

it isn’t ideal, and if you do find you are pregnant, you need to make sure going forwards your contraception is sorted (not just you, your DH needs to step up here too - presumably he knew you weren’t on the pill, and given you say it’s to do with his work this big life change, he should have taken the responsibility of using a condom if he didn’t want those plans disrupting).

Good luck and I hope you don’t find yourself having to make a decision in 2 weeks time.

Daschund1 · 03/10/2025 09:05

DC1 wa conceived as you describe. We very wrongly assumed it would be almost as easy with DC2. We have almost ten years between DC1&2. Is it impossible?absolutely not, but statistics won't really help, nor MAP.

Would a private appointment to fit the coil be cheaper than changing or cancelling whatever big life plans would be affected by an unplanned pregnancy?

Big life plans are being paid for by my husband's employer so, technically, no it wouldn't be cheaper. Our move date would have to be pushed back though.

I do already have private insurance but it would take longer than two days to get a referral.

I conceived DS with only one instance of unprotected sex. As you know, it happens!
