5/6 DPO TTC #2 but also weaning breastfeeding

Hi all!

Wondering if anyone is in the same position as me…

Husband and I have decided we’re ready to try for baby no2. I’ve been weaning my son off the breast for the last 3/4 weeks and feels like my hormones are starting to come back down to ‘normal’. I’m yet to have a period since I conceived in 2023 so I really have no clue where I am in my cycle or when AF will return. I did however have EWCM last week, first time I’ve seen any since before my first pregnancy.

I think I’d be 5/6 dpo today if I did ovulate last week.

Anyone been through the same? I really can’t remember what symptoms I used to get before AF so literally clueless at the moment.

I have sore boobs at times but that’s due to weaning breastfeeding - I think!

Anyone else in the TTW?

I definitely couldn’t imagine slowing down feeding when mine was 14 months, but he got more and more demanding during the day and was getting worse at night. So by 17 months or so, I had to!

I still feed him before naps and if he’s sick. And then just before bed, and first thing in the morning. Otherwise it has to be a no! He’s gotten used to it fairly quickly and it’s only been about 10 days. He’s still waking up at night, just not as often 😅

@Mismatc Yeah, my temps are definitely not as accurate as they should be as I’m also up a lot. But I figured it’s at least some information to work with, especially with no confirmed period yet!

Ahh ok, I didn’t know that about the sleep either @Mismatc . And my 16mo is still up twice a night although last night he slept 8:45-5:20am!! First time ever, so we’ll see if it’s the beginning or a one off 😂.

Hey @TheMauveHedgehog ! I totally feel you there. I didn’t want to wean at first for the sake of trying for a second, when it’s not a given is it and then end the feeding journey sooner then I wanted to. I got mastitis a couple of months ago and when offered the antibiotics that would stop me feeding I turned them down straight away and went for the alternative - so I definitely wasn’t ready but we were only feeding through the night still at that point. He became so wriggly when feeding, which was mainly for comfort, that I started to have a real aversion to it as it became so uncomfortable and I didn’t want it to end on me dreading having to feed him. Hope it’s not too long for you

I’m also breastfeeding my 14 month old still and wanting to conceive number 2 and no sign of periods returning. Only just made the decision to try again, but guess we could be in for a long haul as don’t want to stop feeding on demand. Feeling very torn!

The only problem with temping is that you need to be getting good sleep if you use a thermometer. My toddler wakes too much and I haven’t taken the plunge to buy a gadget to temp for me so I just use OPKs

Lookingtogrowthefanilysomemore · 24/08/2025 22:52

@Mismatc it was definitely as dark as, but wouldn’t have said darker.

I think, being honest, I would feel a bit gutted if it’s negative next week when I test. But at the same time, I feel like it would be the start of trying again if AF arrives and hopefully get to grips with my cycle again - so almost feel like I can’t be too gutted about it either 🤷🏻‍♀️.

@Rosieliz04 that is literally me! I’m the exact same. Hoping I am but don’t even know 😂.
Ohh ok, that’s good to know the with temping then and that they can work together so well. Will definitely consider it for next month if we’re not lucky this time round

@Lookingtogrowthefanilysomemore Yeah for some reason I’m still holding out hope for a miracle even though I don’t even know if I’m ovulating 🤣
But, it has happened, so you never know!

Yes, I tracked BBT first time round so that was really helpful in confirming ovulation as I wasn’t sure if I peaked (I think I only got to 1 or .89 as a peak). BBT confirms ovulation and the strip’s show that your body is about to try to ovulate. I found doing the two together really useful, I struggle with the CM as it all looks the same to me and don’t really want to study the toilet paper 😅. So I prefer using the strips and a thermometer instead!

1.16 is a positive result. Was the test line darker than the control? You could have a shot 🤞

Lookingtogrowthefanilysomemore · 24/08/2025 19:33

Hey @Rosieliz04

That’s interesting about the sporadic ewcm! Sounds familiar with the high but no peak. I remember using the easy @ home when I was first TTC and my peak was 1.36, so when I got a high of 1.16 I really thought the next test would peak but never did.

Ive heard from friends it can take a couple of months for everything to settle down and get back into a regular cycle so to speak, so I don’t know why I’m hoping to conceive this month when I really don’t know if I did ovulate. I’ve also spoken to other women in breastfeeding groups who never had their period as they conceived first try, so it does happen I guess.

Ive never done BBT as a way of tracking. Do you find it shows ovulation around the same time as the strips? If you used it when you were ttc your first?

Hi everyone! I’m also ttc#2 whilst breastfeeding.

No period yet but have been having from sporadic EWCM for the past few weeks. I’m night weaning my 18month off at the moment. So hoping my cycle will start soon.

Ever the optimist, I’m temping and doing ovulation strips, and I found a ‘high’ at the beginning of August but no peak and nothing but ‘low’ since.

I also had some spotting nearly 10 days ago, which definitely wasn’t implantation bleeding. So could be a first period? Which would make on CD14 and still waiting for a peak!

@Mismatc I agree with @Lookingtogrowthefanilysomemore that if interesting re the trying and failing to ovulate! Gives me some hope that my cycle might return soon.

Lookingtogrowthefanilysomemore · 24/08/2025 15:36

@Mismatc hey, thanks for replying and sharing your experience.

I forgot how hard the ttw is 🫠. I never reached a peak on the easy @ home tests, just high for two days and then back to low. It did come up as peak on clearblue though, but not really holding out much hope.

It could well be that my hormones are starting to balance out a bit and hence the change in discharge. I’d be very surprise but you cling onto the tiniest bit of hope don’t you!

wishing you all the best

I did also have EWCM on and off before ovulation happened as my body was trying and failing to ovulate. Yours sounds really hopeful though

Mismatc · 24/08/2025 13:05

I’m 5dpo and breastfeeding an 18 month old 🙂. I tried EVERYTHING to bring my cycles back and they returned in January. I first had very long cycles with late ovulation and a short luteal phase but my luteal phase got longer after a couple of cycles. A month or two ago I dropped to 2 feeds every 24 hours for a month and my cycle returned to 28 days with ovulation on day 14. I have been feeding on demand again for this cycle and I stoll ovulated on day 14

I’ve kind of been trying since my 18 month old’s birth and progressively struggling kore with not being pregnant yet. We go on holiday this week and I might fully wean when we get home

I haven’t had the same premenstrual symptoms when breastfeeding, usually I get sore boobs. I did still have period pains and mood changes. No doubt made worse by the anxiety of TTC. Fingers crossed for you that you’ve caught the first egg!
