Tips on how to not test before missed period

I tested early on my two pregnancies before and had two successful pregnancies then I had an early miscarriage and a chemical miscarriage last year and I was trying my hardest not to test early because of the heartbreak I experienced from the last two times. I’ve been trying this month and hoping I get a positive next month but I don’t know how I am going to stop myself from testing early, I worry so much after having the miscarriages anyone else finding it hard not to test so early x

My girls are loving being big (and big big) sisters and love holding her, reading to her and feeding her. We’re having to combi feed and I have to echo @LaTable - I HATE the extra faff, compared to just whacking a boob out, and the associated worries of having to wake her overnight, guilt if I don’t manage to top up every feed etc etc (plus frustration at not finding time to express more than once a day if I’m lucky…). And worrying about weigh-ins and whether she’ll continue to gain as she’s started to 😩

Laria19 · 23/02/2026 16:46

They get on great with her and then go back to living their lives 😅how about your girls ? @LaTable X

Sounds like you've got that figured out and routine down!
How are your bigger ones finding having a little sister?

Laria19 · 21/02/2026 22:47

Ah so pretty similar to my set up for Blair’s nap time. I know we do have to remind ourselves they haven’t been earth side for very long😅. Actually bottle feeding is grand we just boil the kettle pour the water into the bottles and let them cool room temp. Don’t know why anyone would warm up a bottle as milk is supposed to be room temp anyways 😅but sure each to their own 😊

Non existent haha we do white noise and her room is basically pitch black day and night because I'm too lazy to open and close her shutters every nap.
She's started getting very distracted during feeds now, and my eldest cannot stand the noise so we go to Annie's room more often then not where its quiet (this was similar to my first dd, 2nd was happy to feed and sleep anywhere), and she'll happily fall asleep on the boob but wakes as soon as it's not in her mouth anymore which is killer. Nights are better though. So I guess you win some you lose some 🤷‍♀️ also she's still just 3 month and a baby so I shouldn't be surprised. It's just frustrating that I spend literally all day not being able to do anything because I'm feeding her to sleep constantly or trying to settle her because she's tired but won't nap 🫠 good job she's bloody cute....

Hats off to you for bottle feeding, I was just talking to a friend the other day about that as she bottle fed too, I don't know how you guys do it without the convenience of just whipping a boob out for every occasion without waiting for bottles to be made and warmed 😂

Laria19 · 21/02/2026 21:45

Blair has gotten better at napping during the day she was not good at the beginning unlike my other two who loved a nap😅She’s not mad on a soother either, takes it here and there but does like having it at bed time. I tried breastfeeding agin this time around and it just wasn’t happening for us so I gave up and happily giving her bottles. I salute you for persevering. God help your nips though 😅what’s your routine like trying to put her down for a nap x @LaTable

LaTable · 21/02/2026 18:57

That's really lovely, I bet it suits her so well! 🥰
Is Blair also just never napping during the day or is it just mine? I don't know if it's because the kids have been off school, if it's just 3 month nasties or if she just generally hates sleeping haha she doesn't take a dummy either so my nipples are at breaking point 🫠

Laria19 · 21/02/2026 14:32

Oh she has the same name as my favourite childhood film 🥰beautiful name. My little girl is named Blair 💖 @LaTable

LaTable · 21/02/2026 07:41

Anastasia, the kids just call her Annie though and I call her fanakers or fanakerpants 🤣
What about your little one @Laria19?

Laria19 · 18/02/2026 21:40

Ye it’s super convenient for us, saves us waiting around in an office waiting to be called 😅what did you call your little girl id you don’t mind me asking 🙂 @LaTable

OP posts:
LaTable · 18/02/2026 20:36

Oh goodness, well firstly congratulations on making it with no interventions yay!
Also Freya is a beautiful name, one i love but cpuldnt use because the brand of cat biscuits we get is called freya and apparel that wouldnt do! Super glad at least some beautiful girl gets to use it 🤣
Absolutely feel your pain with the two day non stop contractions - they wear you down!
Also fingers crossed for the feeding and weight gain getting better! It will help the jaundice too im sure.
Did you end up having to cancel the registration appointment? @curliegirlie
@Laria19very envious of the online registration you can do! We have to register our within 3 days... except they normally keep you in for 5 so it a man's job apparently 🙄

Laria19 · 16/02/2026 16:32

Oh that sucks they don’t give you a time for the midwife visit, we arrange times here in Ireland and now we can register the baby’s Information online which means it makes it easier for us. Just remember you are doing great especially with all the stuff that life is throwing at you right now 🫶 @curliegirlie

OP posts:
curliegirlie · 16/02/2026 13:08

The birth wasn’t too bad really - and I avoided having a c-section, other interventions, and no stitches needed! - I think the worst bit was the last day on the antenatal ward, waiting to be re-examined…

The jaundice/weight gain (or lack thereof) has felt a bit tough though. Today we’ve basically been waiting for a midwife visit for another weigh in and because they don’t give a time we’ll have to cancel the registration we’ve booked for 4pm 😩

Laria19 · 15/02/2026 23:23

Oh @curliegirlie you both seemed to of had a tough time but it’s worth it in the end when you get to know your little one is safe and in her mammas arms ☺️hope your looking after yourself 💖oh and I love the name Freya x

A bit of a belated update as my new little girl is now 2.5 weeks old! Despite all hopes, I didn’t start before my induction….I tried to have a sweep at 39+1, but my cervix was still closed; I went in for my scheduled Foley’s balloon induction the Sunday before last, but my cervix was still unfavourable, so I went back home and then came back the following day to have the gel (1ml). Things started slowly, but as things had finally got going, when I had the second dose it was another 1ml dose late on Monday evening. That seemed to do the trick for more regular contractions, although throughout Tuesday I was able to breathe through them. However, by Tuesday evening that was getting trickier, and although they were only every 6 minutes or so, they were long and intense, and from Tuesday night I was struggling not to cry out, which I was really conscious about, as I was in a shared antenatal ward. Late Tuesday I had an examination and was 3cm, but I wasn’t re-examined for another 16 hours or so (partly because the Labour ward was full, so they had nowhere to put me even if I was dilated enough). This pissed me off so much, as the way they described it, although I was on the list for the Labour ward, people coming in with spontaneous labours would be prioritised, even if less dilated, I was seriously worried I’d end up giving birth in the antenatal ward and by that point was desperate for gas and air after two days labouring on paracetamol and codeine which did precisely nothing! Luckily, I finally got reexamined mid Wednesday afternoon and eventually got into the Labour ward at about 4.30, so could use a birthing ball, gas and air, and had an epidural at about 7, which was a huge relief after 2 days of relentless contractions! When I got to the pushing stage, I was reminded how rubbish I am at that bit - ended up with about 6 people in the room urging me on - but I finally managed it, without needing to resort to the instrument tray, and Freya was born on her due date at 22.11!

We were discharged the following afternoon, but then noticed the following day that she was looking a bit yellowy. The MW who did the Day 2 visit was fairly dismissive (just told us to see how she was by Day 5), but by the Saturday her eye whites were also yellow, so back to hospital we went. Sure enough they confirmed she had jaundice and would need blue light therapy, so we were readmitted over the weekend. The nights in particular were pretty horrific as Freya absolutely hated both the blue light and having to wear goggles/a blindfold, but the light did their job and we were discharged again on Monday afternoon. We then went back and forth to hospital all week for bilirubin tests. On the Wednesday it had started to decrease, but then had increased again on the Thursday and Friday, which meant we were readmitted yet again until last Sunday. Freya was particularly furious at the disco cot at night time, but luckily on her second stay they removed the top light first, so she didn’t have to wear the eye mask, which helped a bit. It was so horrible having to keep her in the cot the entire time when she just wanted cuddles.

She’s now 18 days old and hasn’t been gaining weight as quickly as they’d like to see, which is a bit stressful and is meaning having to introduce formula top ups and trying to find time (which I’m failing miserably at…) for regular expressing. I’m just looking forward to things calming down a bit…

On a more positive note, she also had a 90% tongue tie, which we got divided the Friday before last and we didn’t have to fight for it so hard (possibly partly because of the jaundice), which I hope will lead to better feeding 🤞🤞🤞

Hello 👋 I was just thinking about how you gals are getting on with your little ones 😊my baby just turned 3 months old and she is getting so big😭

Hope you girls are doing well!
How are all the precious little bundles getting along?
Mine is almost 3 months and time is flying! She's the spitting image of both my big ones, and although sleeps better than they ever did we are still basically attached to me 24/7 😅

Laria19 · 09/12/2025 21:41

@LaTable It seems we have very similar newborns 😅mine hates been out down and wants in the arms all the time. I had to be induced at 41+2. First time ever been induced, only good thing was she was born 6 hrs after the induction I was worried I was going to be in it for the long hall. Waters had to be broken like my other births, she wasn’t progressing much so I opted for the epidural which takes 20 mins to set up and 20 mins to work, well let’s just say I sat still for an epidural while having horrendous contraction to then only end up having her 20 mins later 😅I didn’t even get to feel the affects of the epidural as I had to tell the midwife I needed to push. 2-3 pushes and she was out. Recovery was good and baby was healthy☺️

How did your private scan go? What's baby boy measuring? @Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate
She was absolutely the hardest birth yet (and baby, she won't settle with anybody but me and won't be put down for even 2 minutes without screaming bloody murder 😅)
She basically just wouldn't descend so labour took forever (days of constant contractions because my body doesn't do anything textbook) and then she was back to back and decided to twist once her head was out and almost got her shoulder stuck, that was an odd feeling I must admit haha but once she finally got low enough it was 20 minutes from being at the hospital and "yep baby will be here soon" cm dilated to born. Thankfully didn't birth in the car! And absolutely the most uncomfortable birth I've had - her waters didn't break and release until she was out. Soooo much pressure.
At least for my 2nd her waters broke before she crowned so there was at least 3 minutes of relief from it before she was born and contractions actually did something unstead of just squeezing a bag full of liquid! But apart from that it was easy enough, and no tearing or anything else traumatic so grateful for that!
How was your labour @Laria19?

Hope you ladies are all doing well with your pregnancies (and newborn) x
My little one arrived 40+1 just the same as her sister! She's a little velcro baby and another mini me and now I want a billion more 😍😍

Mega mega congratulations! I’m 32+2, had a dream last night that I had a quick and fairly painless birth in the kitchen of all places, was a bit disappointed to wake up still pregnant 😂.

I have a growth scan booked for the 18th followed by a consultant appt on the 23rd…so convenient 😩

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 04/12/2025 05:44

Also, is it appropriate to ask how the birth went @LaTable? I do love a birth story but appreciate some don't!! X

Chocolateeggsarebetterthannormalchocolate · 04/12/2025 05:30

Congratulations @LaTable🥰 wonderful news!

I've got a private scan on Sunday at 30 weeks, so still 10 to go! No word from the midwife after my GTT test.. I'm amazed! Apparently he's a whopper in there though 🤣
