It may just be my computer ( no broad band in the sticks!)but the other thread was taking a long while to load and accept new messages so maybe we can start again here...

Well if you look on amazon under the reader reviews for taking charge of your fertility ( The mucus bible!) yes it appears loads of people had their problems sorted out by mucus watching!

I'm glad i'm not the only who hasnt had success with the kits. I thought i meant i wasnt ovulating. i'v spent a small fortune on them. Has anyone else has success with the mucus method?

sprout · 18/02/2003 14:59

Ovulation kits never have more than a fait blue line for me, either - but my gynae did a scan when I went for a checkup last month and said she could see that I'd just ovulated. So I'm a bit doubtful now about how reliable the kits are. I'm just assuming any line is better than none. I also think it varies from one brand to another.

grommit · 18/02/2003 14:10

how do the ovulation kits work? I did try Persona a few months back but kept forgetting check at the same time every day!

bells2 · 18/02/2003 14:05

They have worked for me although it took a while to figure out that I was not ovulating until day 21 or so. I ordered a load of cheapie ones over the internet so I could test every day for 2 weeks.

Marina · 18/02/2003 13:58

buttercup, I never had much luck with ovulation predictor kits either - charting (although I was "practising" at the time pending a consultant's appointment...) did it for me this time round. Previously I used a Persona, what a nuisance for you that your cycle is just a bit too long.
Elliott, best of luck tomorrow, hope the scan goes well.
Bayleaf, enjoy your meet-up!

buttercup · 18/02/2003 13:42

yes exactly the same for me. The mucus thing is definitely happening though different amounts each month. As you say, two weeks to wait and see.

dot1 · 18/02/2003 13:41

Hi Buttercup - I'm not sure about ovulation kits either. This month I got a faint line (which is better than usual - before my latest medication I didn't get any line at all!), but lots of mucus changes at the right time, which leads me to think I did ovulate. But it's really depressing when the ovulation kit says the line has to be as dark as the test line...

Ah well - 2 weeks to wait and see....

buttercup · 18/02/2003 13:30

I haven't posted on this thread (or any other) for a long time as I have been totally bogged down in work. I have been trying to conceive for five cycles. Last month had the sicky bug which seemed to be going round and thought that was it but then on-no-not-again the period came. Conceived quickly the first time. I have tried using the ovulation predictor kits but they dont seem to work for me. never get the deep blue line, just a feint one for a few days. Am now doing body temperature chart which seems to indicate that I am ovulating although looks more like a moutain range than the smooth line you are supposed to get. Has anyone else not found the predictor kits work for them - what does it mean do you think? Bought persona but cant use it because my cycle is slightly longer than the maximum 35 days. Also having problems getting my boyfriend to have sex more than once in 48 hours!

CookieMonster · 18/02/2003 13:23

Elliot, good luck with the scan tomorrow .... needles at the ready !!

grommit · 18/02/2003 11:57

Thanks Janinlondon - think you may be right! Must be something I ate....

janinlondon · 18/02/2003 11:49

Grommit darling, I think you may be clutching at the proverbial straws here. Sorry. Implantation rarely happens within a week of conceiving (presuming you are talking about the egg/sperm confluence, rather than anything else?) so your body would be doing brilliantly well to register something at that stage. Of course I could be wrong. Hope you're feeling better or worse (as the case may be, depending on the cause) soon!

elliott · 18/02/2003 10:03

Hi Bayleaf - yes, first scan tomorrow and hopefully start injections the next day. I'm worried that I haven't down regged again as I haven't really had any symptoms and my mucus looks suspiciously ovulatory (sorry for the graphic detail). Also had a couple of times when I was late taking the spray - last week got all the way to work before I remembered- had to turn round and go back again, I can really do without that at the moment!!
Other than that just plugging away.
Enjoy your meet up.
Hope everyone else doing ok.

grommit · 18/02/2003 09:57

has anyone ever experienced morning/all day sickness within a week of conceiving...? Hopeful thinking (probably a tummy bug)

bayleaf · 18/02/2003 09:51

How're you doing elliot? It MUST be nearly 21 days by now - I know time goes slowly when you're down regging - but even so... When is your first scan?
Jane101 -presumably you're expecting to ov at the beginning of March - do you have to do the cyclogest thing with iui? Fingers crossed it's the 'right' side this time.
I'm physically recovered from the sore throat etc and feel 100% better psychologically (sp?)as a result - we had a busy weekend - away with dh's work and so time seems to be passing fairly quickly and I'm back to feeling quite happy about it all.
Just to add a little more excitment to my life I'm meeting up with two people from the ivf website attached to the chain of hospitals I use ( CARE) next Monday as we all live within 10 miles of each other and already have a dd aged 15-25 months - not quite as exciting as a Mumsnet meet-up but still!
AND it's half term next week - which I'm sure is a pain for most of you - but for me it means potentially 3 full days of dd in nursery to shop/chat/read/tidy/cook/whatever - bliss! ( Bad Mothers' club here I come!)

Jane101 · 14/02/2003 20:41

bluebear - congratulations!
bayleaf and elliot - I'm hoping for you. (Bad grammar, but YKWIM).
sprout - of course you can feel sorry for yourself, I know it's horrible when you convince yourself it's worked and then feel so let down when it hasn't.

bayleaf · 11/02/2003 16:44

Thanks you two. I know it's just the physical illness that is pulling me down emotionally but it still helps to get your thoughts on it all. I'm sure by the weekend I'll have got the virus on the run and I'll start to feel much better and more like my normal self - my usual '' I'll do something proactive and MAKE myself feel better is a bit of a failure as a strategy when you feel like death and just want to go back to bed!

OP posts:
CookieMonster · 11/02/2003 13:34

Bayleaf,
sorry to hear you're feeling a bit down with it all at the moment ... it's impossible to feel upbeat and positive all the time isn't it?
I want to wish you all the very best for your transfer in March and really really hope that all goes well. I had 3 embryos transferred each time and always thought 'I'll worry about triplets if it happens!!' .... I think it's worth it just to increase your chances of success.
As to thinking about 3 of 4 more failures, it's hard not to I know, but just try and focus on the next cycle and put your energies into that not into something which may not even happen.
Best wishes ... CM

elliott · 11/02/2003 13:31

bayleaf, glad you've got your next cycle sorted. I'm sure going for the natural cycle is a good idea - it sounds so gentle and non-invasive (she says enviously!!) PLus avoiding all those hormonal swings and the risks from superovulation etc etc. Do you have an approx date for transfer - probably won't be that different from mine!!

Sorry you're feeling fed up about it all. Birthdays don't help do they? It is such a game of chance and that uncertainty is hard to live with.

I must admit my way of coping with that uncertainty is to set limits - even before ds I never imagined that I would go on and on with treatment whatever. I hate that feeling of life being in limbo and I need to be able to see a time when I draw a line and move on. (of course I have not yet had to face this in reality, so don't know how long I really would have gone on, but that's the strategy I adopted). This time I feel even more strongly that I cannot do this many times - because now the resources (both financial and time/energy) I am putting in to treatment mean less left for ds. Its one thing bankrupting yourself when you have no children, quite another when you are potentially frittering away their university fees or similar!
The good thing about this is that I can think to myself, well at least by next year all this waiting and uncertainty will be OVER, and I will have a good idea whether I'm having more children. And if ds is going to be an only, I can try and focus on the good things about that, and maybe plan something that wouldn't be possible if I were pregnant/looking after two.

Well, that's theory anyway!! I'll get back to you when I'm on my 5th IVF....and of course I do know of people who have done loads of cycles and eventually got there, and I'm sure they don't regret it.

The other thing I find helps, when I am feeling really sad at the thought of perhaps never being pregnant again, is that I realise that I might always feel like that even if I had reached my desired family size - I'm sure that a lot of women have a sense of sadness when they know they're not going to have another baby (in fact perhaps those feelings are even stronger for the very maternal ones with huge families!!)

Anyway that may not help any. I know we all have our own ways of dealing with this stuff. Just doing some therapeutic offloading really!

bayleaf · 11/02/2003 11:16

Sprout - you have EVERY right to feel down - in some ways it's worse when there's ''nothing wrong'' and you are condemmed to having to bd at certain times of the month, every month, whether you want to or not, seemingly for all perpetuity!

I know, I've tried both and I can't really say this is that much worse - just more expensive!
The thing that gets me down is time passing - me being 39 in March and dd already being 2...

WWW - I'd say that sound v positive as 'natural, ''wanted'' sex is supposed to work far better than procreational bd....

I've booked a frozen embryo transfer in March - and I'm risking going for a 'natural' cycle ( ie no drugs) but this is a risk as if I don't ovulate it'll be cancelled and I'm not sure I will ovulate as when I was charting before there were odd months when I didn't.
I know I shall be soooooooooo frustrated and pi**ed off if that happens - but the alternative is the whole down reg and stimulate thing as tho you were having ivf - AND a likely EC/ET date just when we've booked a nice weekend away at one of those hotels in the Mumsnet 'hotels with childcare'review!!
I've also elected to have 3 put back next time which he says is fine.

One thing that has made me feel a bit 'down' tho - (not terribly logically but still, since when did emotions need logic...)
My consultant is a nice bloke and very open and friendly - I knew that he had a ds 6-7ish and twins 2.5 - all icsi - I didn't realise till last night tho that altho the first ds was a easy first time success, they had about 13 or so embryos put back ( ie at least 5 failures) before the twins came along - and at the time his wife was only mid 30s - and there's nothing ''wrong'' with her - just his sperm. He was just emphasising to me that so much of it seems to be ''chance'' and I really do appreciate his honesty and openess about it all, it does help - but having to imagine another 3 or 4 failures before success is pretty depressing!!!!

Ok the logical part of my brain knows that's stupid and does not actually affect my chances in any way - but I've had some sort of virus since Friday - and still have raging sore throat and feel cr*p so is kind of hard to put self in positive frame of mind at the moment.
Also have a smear test in an hour's time - oh my cup runneth over!

congratulations bluebear!! Hope the first trimester passes quickly and uneventfully. Will this be number two for you?
www, I'd say with 'not many days' when you didn't dtd who knows what might happen...

bluebear · 10/02/2003 19:43

I posted on the original thread - have been using persona - and am almost 5 weeks pregnant. Haven't told anyone in real life yet.

Good luck to everyone!!

WideWebWitch · 10/02/2003 18:14

Thanks for asking elliott. We've had lots of sex this month (because we wanted to, not just because of trying) but I'm sure I'm not pregnant although my period is a week away. I'm premenstrual for one thing and still haven't got around to working out when I ovulate for another. So although there weren't that many days when we didn't have sex we could still have just about missed ovulation (if I am ovulating, don't even know that for sure!) I feel Ok about it in a kind of 'if it happens it happens if it doesn't, never mind' kind of way. I think I was expecting it to happen straight away and was disappointed at first but I've decided really that what will be will be...

elliott · 10/02/2003 13:53

sprout
I do know exactly where you're coming from - most of my time spent ttc ds was like that, as I had no reason to think it wouldn't just happen normally. So don't talk your feelings down - they're real enough!

sprout · 10/02/2003 13:44

I think I last posted on the previous thread, but I'm still ttc... "with conventional methods" (and a bit of help from Persona/ovulation sticks). Eleven cycles and still counting. At least we already have dd, and I had a mc before that, so know it's physically possible.
But that doesn't stop me feeling pretty fed up from time to time - especially this weekend when not only did my period arrive just as I'd convinced myself we'd cracked it this month, and then had the worst period pains I've had for ages. I realise it's nothing at all in comparison with the agonies some of you are going through with IVF, but I did feel a mite sorry for myself.
