As the title suggests, if you’re over 35 and TTC your first, I’d love to hear from you! Would be nice to hear from a few of us in the same boat 🙂

Hello! I'm 38, got pregnant first cycle in Oct but had a complete miscarriage 3 weeks ago at 8 weeks (though baby stopped growing at 6). I may have ovulated last week but not sure. I only track EWCM and had some at CD 14, I count the day of my miscarriage as CD 1. But post MC hormones and cycles are wonky, so could be a failed attempt! We BD twice since and this is the only cycle I will be equally pleased to see my period as a BFP, as it means I can ttc actively again.

I'm in London and the average age for first time mums where I live/work is mid 30s so please don't feel too old! In fact my 28 year old colleague attended NCT and said she was the only one younger than 35, and none of the group were IVF pregnancies either. Of my friend group of 12 women, everyone had their first DC post 35 except one who had hers at 27 (but had 2 MCs between 25-27), and one at 42 using IVF but she'd been trying since 33.

My nan was an OBGYN consultant who had my uncle and mum at 39 and 42 (naturally) and always said that while egg quantity may decrease with age, quality doesn't decrease so drastically as to affect fertility in the way we are led to believe. There are so many other factors at play for a successful live birth, and actually in her day there were a lot of miscarriages no one ever talked about in younger women (and not recorded so they don't make stats). Also sperm quality also decreases with age but obv men are not scared into testing and guilt trips, or spend a single day worrying about it. She was a strong feminist and believed that as woman gained more independence in the 70s - allowed to vote, have mortgages, credit, jobs etc, the way to ensure they did none of that was scare them into pregnancy younger. Which kept them at home. A lot of medical research is sponsored by private organisations, individuals, shockingly religious groups who are silent sponsors, and pharma companies with agendas, so it's not as unbiased as we think. That's why there such little attention paid to women's health issues other than to put the fear into you about avoiding pregnancy (making it entirely our responsibility) and then guilting you for not trying young enough (also our responsibility).

So many women worry they are infertile or too old and don't even consider that the male partner could be the problem. My friend spent 2 years feeling guilty after failing to conceive, that she should have started sooner rather than focus on her career. They went for IVF and her DH had to get tested the first time where it showed she had no issues but he had very low sperm motility and morphology. So 2 years that he lived feeling absolutely fine about his swimmers and she carried all the guilt. The consultant who confirmed our miscarriage took great pains to tell DH and me this wasn't anything I did but likely chromosomal abnormalities due to genetic material from both of us combining wrong (this is most miscarriages). Basically men are 50% of the conception puzzle too.

The NHS guidance is to wait for one period post MC to start again but that's for dating purposes only, the WHO says to wait for 6 months (something UK researchers have challenged) - so you can see there is no clarity or agreement even in the medical community on how women's bodies work!

So I made a promise to myself to not feel guilty or blame myself for ttc challenges as conception, pregnancy and being a mum are all hard enough. You are all amazing for even trying. Be kind to yourself and proud that you are so resilient and strong to keep going even when it feels horrible and pointless.

This is such a great post & a really good reminder to us all ❤️ so sorry for your loss. I hope 2025 brings you everything you want ❤️

@houwseevryweekend I’m so glad you’re here! 1)because a few of us really needed to read your post today and 2)I’m no longer the only 38 year old here 😂
Sorry to hear about your loss ❤️

One thing I noticed is my ewcm, I only had one month where I had two proper days of it. Every other month it was barely there at all.

@houwseevryweekend i love this way of thinking!! Medical misogyny is a huge topic and so little understood by women, if we really knew everything they’d be suffragette style protests. I’m sure of it!

@houwseevryweekend thank you for this, I really needed a little pep talk to keep me going🥹. I'm so sorry for your loss ❤️

@overthinkersanonnymus I don’t blame you, so disheartening and I think at this time of year, it’s knowing that you’re going into a new year with much the same ahead of you. If I see any good deals on digitals I think I’ll just stock up, stark as they are I’d rather that than guesswork.

BFN for me today at 11dpo too. After my dodgy indent line yesterday, I'm in a foul mood.

Clara202 · 31/12/2024 10:31

BFN for me today also on a digital clear blue ultra early and on a cheapie. Just want AF to arrive now to get on with it, cycle day 30, 10dpo. I feel really disappointed today and I’m not sure why as I knew this wasn’t going to be our month.
I think seeing the ‘Not Pregnant’ on the digital was a bit more stark than a line not showing up on a strip. I feel like maybe I’ve missed the boat. I listened to a podcast yesterday and I’m shocked to say I didn’t fully understand eggs and how egg freezing actually works until now. We should all be doing it at age 25!

I'm so sorry for your BFN too! It really sucks seeing it in writing.
It's hard not to feel disappointed, even though you try not to get your hopes up. There are sooo many things I wish I'd known sooner about TTC! We said that we would give it 3 months after Hycosy and then get the ball rolling with IVF which absolutely terrifies me!
Be kind to yourself, you haven't missed the boat, our time will come❤️

BFN for me this morning 😔 I said after my Hycosy that I wasn't going to pin all my hopes on it, after hearing such success stories.. but I can't help feel sad! That was my 1 and only test I have left so I think I'm just going to wait it out now.. my AF is due next mon/Tues so a little while to go yet!

Clara202 · 30/12/2024 21:28

@HollyGolightly4 there does seem to be a lot of announcements of late. I’m possibly just more in tune to it as it’s occupying my own mind.

BabyTin2025 · 30/12/2024 21:21

@KittyFantastica Ah thank you for the advice! Glow app still isn’t showing peak but might have tested too late. I get absolutely god awful pains when I’m ovulating so I know round about when it all kicks off!

@HollyGolightly4 i can completely relate. MMC 6 years ago, nothing since. Traumatic as had to have surgery. All friends etc now have families and it hurts a lot.

Wishing you all the best of luck! I’ll keep you in my thoughts xx

HollyGolightly4 · 30/12/2024 21:15

Hi, this is me! Not ovulated yet this month but hoping it will be tomorrow/day after. It's been a long time for us, one 12 week miscarriage. All tests normal. Really struggling with all the announcements etc online and in real life.

KittyFantastica · 30/12/2024 21:12

Oops, sorry @BabyTin2025, I hit send too quickly.

I got my peak 28th and it was over in a day much like yours, so I expect I ovulated 29th, or at the latest today. My EWCM has dried up already, so I'd guess it's already happened.

You could try inseminating tomorrow if possible too for maximum chances!

Hi gals,

I’m technically now in the tww. Not sure if I ovulated today or yday. I’ll pop a picture on if anyone can advise? DH and I are TTC through at home insemination, which we did last night so if I ovulated today, then we are in with a shot. I am 36 (37 on NYD) so my clock is ticking. Best of luck to you all x

Hiya, ovulation happens 12-48 hours after the peak LH is reached, so could be tomorrow or the day after :)

@overthinkersanonnymus, I can definitely see something there! Hopefully it's the real deal 🤞🏽 are these tests notorious for evaps then? I usually use Wondfo cheapies, although I have had indents on them in the past!

I think all tests are notoriously bad for it. That's why you need to always re test with your normal brand, and then with another brand.

I've been stung before with lots of indents in a row and then went to confirm with a digital, to give to my partner, and it was negative.

It wasn't a chemical or anything like that. It was a genuine negative.

overthinkersanonnymus · 30/12/2024 16:56

@Clara202 it appeared straight away, but when it's completely dry, there is nothing there. It's completely white.

I think it may be a dodgy batch because I retested (about 28 times) 😂 and only one more of them got the indent. The rest were all totally white even when wet.

Clara202 · 30/12/2024 14:24

@overthinkersanonnymus I’ve never had any sort of line, indent or otherwise! How do you know it’s an indent and not the real thing? The amount of time it takes to appear?

Hey @Clara202 I'm 10dpo today and had a whopper of an indent
