@bunnykins123 yeah, after she said that I wasn't sure anymore I wanted the Doppler to be used... However, felt grateful the midwife encouraged me to as hearing HB gave some reassurance.
But had she not heard anything, I'd have arranged a private scan asap.
@Indianna2006 she explained why it's harder at 24 weeks and while I can't remember fully, it was to do with baby's size/positioning, and she mentioned it gets even trickier at 28w 🤔

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 22:28

I’m sure this babe is gonna have loads of hair 🤔
This indigestion heart burn is annoying everytime I lay down at night. Yuck all the acid wants to come up.

currently chewing on rennies before bedtime every night like there going out of stock or something 🙄🤣 keeping them in business I guess. Every little helps

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 22:25

@bunnykins123 it was just a flat out no before I’d even asked lol 😂🙈 new policy we don’t now listen at 16w because of x,y and z bla bla bla 😂
but meant I convinced DH for gender scan which DD came to so turned out in my favour really lol.

@LuckyMoonstone ah thats good. Deff ask consultant then if not. Or ask him they aswell!! Why not. They seem to do it.

calimc83 · 15/03/2023 22:21

@bunnykins123 I'm sure I felt teeny movements super early..and I had an anterior placenta x

calimc83 · 15/03/2023 22:20

@LuckyMoonstone yeah my consultant checked for me. I didn't even have to ask..I 💯 wasn't prepared mentally for a scan though and sent me into a panic! 😆 @bunnykins123 I think my eldest is getting a bit jealous tbh..she's fine with the baby but she was super stroppy tonight. It's hard as I'm constantly telling them to be careful of mummy's sore tummy etc and she's just fed all evening so they haven't had much time with me..don't want to push them away by any means but don't want a 3yr old dive bombing me at the mo 🙈 xx

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 22:19

and I am carrying extra weight around my middle so feel like I’ll be one of those people where a heartbeat can’t be heard even if everything is actually ok

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 22:17

@bunnykins123 well I was hoping to have had a consultant appointment by now so that I could ask that exact question! But the first chance I will get to ask anyone is with my midwife at 16 weeks. So I’ll explain to her about the loss (which she knows a little bit) and see if she takes pity on me and tries to get me a scan before 20 weeks.

calimc83 · 15/03/2023 22:16

@LuckyMoonstone ohh yes please! We don't even have a shortlist yet..@MrsJGrealish oh I need to know...😬 x

bunnykins123 · 15/03/2023 22:15

@calimc83 thank you!! It is such a relief as I wasn't sure I was feeling much but since, I feel like I'm mayyyybe feeling stuff (maybe it's psychological!). So glad to hear little lady is doing well, even if she is keeping you up all hours! How's the older kiddies adapting to having another another sibling? 💕

@Indianna2006 @LuckyMoonstone that's so true, it varies by trust. With DD they did listen at 16 weeks but I wondered if maybe they had stopped since. I spent a bit too long googling today before the scan and found a lot about overweight people too struggling to find the heartbeat. It does seem a bit unfair that some are offered it and others not. @Indianna2006 did you ask to hear the heartbeat or was it a flat out no?

@MrsJGrealish I have a very funny mental image of that now 😂 omg did you freak out?! I would have been a wreck if they had been so blaze about it! Tell us the name on FB??

@LuckyMoonstone have you maybe considered asking the NHS if they will scan you around 16 weeks to check? Given the circumstances they may make an exception? If they offered with DS, chances are they will offer it again I suspect.

@Indianna2006 I know. I really do. My sensible head is saying it's a terrible idea but my tired, fatigued, anxious mind is just wanting me to feed the anxiety more. It's £19 per month rolling so if I get it and start feeling babe, I may just leave it in the box. Eek. Or just try it after a scan to see how easy / hard it is to find. God, why do we do these things to ourselves?!?

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 22:02

@Indianna2006 yes my first consultant appointment is 4 days later! I am having a mix of both apparently. So yes I could ask him/her as well, good idea

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:54

@LuckyMoonstone exactly deffo ask. If not will you be consultant led at all? Due to last time or not?
As if so friend who is 4 weeks behind me when mw wouldn’t do at 16w which she knew as I’d told her they prob wouldn’t as she lives same are as me. She asked at her consultant appointment at 17 w and he checked for her. So could be an idea? If not? xx

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 21:52

@Indianna2006 yeah lottery and circumstance I guess. I will say all of this to my midwife when I see her, if you don’t ask you don’t get

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:47

@LuckyMoonstone yeah totally get that. I guess just go through options of what you could do in those scenarios. Which I guess are

  1. they say they can’t check for it
  2. they will check for it but can’t refer for scan if nothing found
  3. or they will check and refer if nothing found which is the option you want.

seems a bit of a bloody lottery. Must be based on location for sure. Xx

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:45

I personally wouldn’t use a doppler. Only because..you don’t know what you’re looking for. And you think oh yeh easy enough to find baby’s heartbeat.

Everytime Midwife listens to baby’s heartbeat at my appointments. She keeps moving the things around like she can’t find it an I’m like isn’t it that? She said no. That’s your veins pumping and your own heartbeat. Which you can also hear through your belly and when your main veins pump into your pelvis. It sounds bloody same to me.
so it is black and white as to there is only one heartbeat in your belly… so you could easily mistake your baby having a heart beat as your own. I’ve never bothered. Once they kick. You won’t feel like you need to use a Doppler. So hopefully it won’t be long for any of your nearing 20 ish weeks xxx

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 21:44

I have booked a private scan for 2 days after my midwife appointment, same as last time, but having to find out id lost the baby in the private clinic just made it feel 10000x worse than at hospital, and I can’t go through that again

MrsJGrealish · 15/03/2023 21:44

@bunnykins123 he probably does..he never gives me water and he felt my boobs and was like mmm quizzically not enjoyment (well he is a man probably enjoyment on some level🙄😂)

17 weeks..and a heartbeat 💗 I'm so happy for you ❤️❤️ my gp couldn't find DS2s heartbeat and said ah well it's probably there. Probably?? Like she was so bad I changed practice after that.

@calimc83 my friend had a little girl 2 weeks ago and she chose a lovely name. Kinda old fashioned but I don't wanna say on an open forum because I know of no other babies called this. Totally outting myself with that one 🤣

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:42

@bunnykins123 ugh my pelvis is being right agg. I am waddling about so much mum today at school said looked like I was fed up and in pain. I was like I am a bit. But not long. And very grateful I’ve almost got there before it plays up.
try some pregnancy yoga maybe. Keep it all supple and stretched as much as possible.
deffo have find it harder second time. Having if a child already makes it harder. And I deffo am bigger and just clicker and clunkier 🤣

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:41

@Happinessandrainbows funny how yours said totally diff as well about it being easier to find.
I don’t see how that’s accurate. Makes more sense to me it’s harder to find smaller they are. It’s VERY loud at 28 weeks and thereafter. Like there is no denying it’s a heart beat. It sounds quite different to at 16 weeks imo which can be quite faint and not as distinguishable.

Indianna2006 · 15/03/2023 21:38

@LuckyMoonstone @Happinessandrainbows @bunnykins123 I deff think it varies. Where are you all based?

I am like East Anglia but England based. And mine didn’t check heartbeat. I knew she wouldn’t though as I knew from other friends that they hadn’t as policy had changed in England I believe since my DD was born. MOST midwife’s will still check it…just because there kind. Particularly if you’re slim. Or they did for most of my friends. But they cannot refer you for a scan if they can’t find it as the nice guidance had changed and it would just be rejected as they shouldn’t be doing the heartbeat. Is what is current practise in our area.

In my maternity pack. On the notes section of what checks they give. It actually does state all the others where they check heartbeat and 16 w it doesn’t list it as they removed it.

again I think most will. But if you’re in England I think you’ll find they can’t actually refer for a scan or it would be refused after the referall. But they perhaps might in exceptional circumstances for you@LuckyMoonstone. But either way. No one’s gonna go not hear a heartbeat and then not get a private scan and wait 4 weeks. Cos they’d be bonkers.

I didn’t get to hear heartbeat but I was prepared for them to say that. So we booked a gender scan obv after anyway.

I was told they took it out because larger ladies it can be harder to find the heartbeat because the babies are still so small. And it was a waste of resources to send so many people for scans when they couldn’t find it and caused unnecessary worry. When the scans obv vast majority were totally fine. It was just to early to hear it.

Again Scotland or Ireland will have diff rules on that again. So does depend where you are and if your midwife sticks to rules or not. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Very annoying though as it’s a bit of a unknown until you go in..

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 21:22

@calimc83 I love talking about baby names, let us know if you need help!

LuckyMoonstone · 15/03/2023 21:21

@Happinessandrainbows @bunnykins123 oh so you were told different things at your appointments, so I guess it does differ all over! I will tell her why I’m worried about it and hopefully her policy is to request a scan if a heartbeat isn’t heard. Or maybe she will understand why it would be so hard for me emotionally and make an exception. She isn’t the midwife I had with the baby I lost but she was my midwife for DS so I like her and feel comfortable talking to her about how I feel, I wouldn’t be worried about getting upset in front of her. It’s in just over 2 weeks time so I’ll actually be 16 and a half weeks.

@bunnykins123 I have considered getting a Doppler to use at home but it might cause more trouble than good

calimc83 · 15/03/2023 21:20

Hey just about caught up with this thread now 😅 all ok over here.
