Cheryl Cole just said at 39 she's too old to have another biological baby. What's your thoughts?
I'm genuinely curious as someone who's nearly 38 I'm still trying for my first baby.
Can a healthy pregnancy be possible?
At 39 apparently half your eggs would be deemed chromosomally abnormal.
What's your experience on getting pregnant at this age?

Not sure Cheryl Cole is at the forefront of reproductive science

She didn't say she was
If she feels too old at 39 that is totally her choice.

HellsCominWithMe · 24/01/2023 16:50

I had one at 22 with a chromosomal abnormality after 6 miscarriages. I’m almost 40 and as much as I want another one having a child with a disability has already been a very real and hard thing to do in my youth. I’d be mad to do it again.

Terven · 24/01/2023 16:50

I had a baby at 38 and 39 and then another one at 41. The problem in my opinion is that I feel too old and tired. Im now closer to 60 than 50 an am still doing the school run. I couldn’t have imagined how peri menopause would change my life when I was in my thirties.

Hankunamatata · 24/01/2023 16:50

She has one child perhaps she doesn't feel she could go though another prganancy, perhaps she physically can't, perhaps she just doesn't want to.

GoodChat · 24/01/2023 16:49

I would say 39 would be too old for me to have another biological child too. I don't think id function well at that age.

She's not saying she's too old to conceive but there's a lot more to having a baby than that.

cptartapp · 24/01/2023 16:49

My friend had her second set of twins at 47. Her first set were 17!

MyPurpleHeart · 24/01/2023 16:49

Each woman is different. Im currently 6 months pregnant with my first at 34.

I spoke to my doctor beforehand and her advice was, come off birth control and see what happens. Don't lose heart, it will take some time.

3 weeks dear reader, it took me 3 weeks. I didn't even miss the period and I was trying not to throw up my cornflakes.

WhatNoRaisins · 24/01/2023 16:49

People are allowed to have preferences about their own lives and bodies. I don't get the point of making things like this all about you.

notangelinajolie · 24/01/2023 16:49

My periods just stopped one day. I was 37 and that was that. Perhaps Cheryl is the same.
I know the average age for menopause is higher but average age means there will always be people younger (and older)

Roselilly36 · 24/01/2023 16:49

Her choice, she already has a child though, if she didn’t she may hold a different view.

Whenever these sorts of threads come up there are always lots of posts saying ‘I was 45 and all was fine’ but the stats are real and 39 will statistically be a harder age to conceive and have a healthy baby. Of course there are exceptions but at a population level the odds aren’t going to be in your favour the older you are. That often needs to be weighed up with financial and career advantages of waiting or people just not having met the right person. We can’t all live our lives by the statistics but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t true.

This is such a sensible comment.

The women with the success stories will all appear on these threads (they are rightfully delighted and proud), but those who didn't manage their miracle baby are the silent majority.

Fertility is utterly individual. I know several women just in my circle who've had babies over 40. I know more than a few who are devastated they left it too late. Pop onto the over 40 fertility boards on here and see what people are dealing with.

OP - at 39 I don't think you are too old at all and hopefully your ovaries agree! It's all in the genes. Good luck.

365names · 24/01/2023 16:47

I had one at 41 wish I had my children at 28/30 rather than 34 and 41. Fact 50 with a 9 year old is hard.

MK85 · 24/01/2023 16:46

@MotherOfHouseplants I can see why alot of poeple could come to that conclusion. The fact that she said "im a little bit older " and she's considering adoption rather than her own child. She's not ruling out more children. Shes ruling out having her own biological children. She said she was going to use a sperm doner 2 or 3 years ago . I think op just didn't present her statement well but I don't think she tried to misrepresent it intentionally. For whatever reason cheryl dosent want more biological children. Op was merely asking others opinion on her own circumstances if 39 is too old since she's 38 herself

StarGoddess · 24/01/2023 16:46

It really depends on the person. This tends to vary hugely person to person.

Bepis · 24/01/2023 16:45

I'm 39 and I would consider myself too old. My body would not be able to handle the pressure of pregnancy and just the thought of starting all over again (have 2 kids aged 19 and 16).

Dramaalpacas · 24/01/2023 16:44

It’s too old for me too…

Its all about making your own choices based on the risks which increase with age. At 40 you have a 1 in 100 chance of having a baby with Down syndrome and that’s only one of the various conditions that you are at much higher risk of. As someone who has worked with autistic children for years I can tell you that having older parents is very very common. If you’re ok with that then go ahead but I guess Cheryl didn’t want to take the risk. Her choice.

Yes, people with conditions such as autism and Down syndrome are amazing worthy people who bring much to the world and have great lives but also in many cases they are unable to live independently as adults and require care for their whole lives. Who would look after my child who can’t live independently when I’m old or gone?? Not a risk I’d like to take as I feel (rather selfishly) that I don’t want that for either me or my hypothetical children.

frogswimming · 24/01/2023 16:43

Well I had my youngest at 43. I was born when my mum was 43 too. All healthy!

knobheadinlaws · 24/01/2023 16:41

20 weeks pregnant with my second, 38 years old

Bunnycat101 · 24/01/2023 16:40

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 24/01/2023 16:40

I mean, yes, objectively it's pretty old to have a baby because our eggs are in much better nick when we're younger. It suits some people to have babies at that age, it doesn't suit Cheryl Cole.

Can't say I blame her, especially as I believe she had a rough first pregnancy.

amonsteronthehill · 24/01/2023 16:38

2nd at 39, 3rd at 41 ... both perfectly healthy children, not teens eating me out of the house.

She's ridicuous

Orrrrr she's a different person to you? Your experience (and hers) is not universal. The "ridiculous" one is you.

FourTeaFallOut · 24/01/2023 16:38

She may feel that she is too old. It doesn't just have to be about reproductive health. I've got a chronic illness that certainly doesn't get better with age and lack of sleep - it would be too old for me. And she doesn't owe you an explanation.

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2023 16:38

Well it is biologically old, even if it’s more commonplace now. And she says 38 is too old for her. That’s ok. That’s her right choice. That doesn’t mean don’t bother and that’s not what she’s saying really (I assume).
FWIW, I had DC2 on my 38th birthday 🎉and DC3 at 42. I also had 3 losses between 38 and 40, including a loss at 27 weeks… so, with age comes a bit of a steeper climb, for sure.

Elspethelf · 24/01/2023 16:38

There are so many factors, you may or may not have a hard time conceiving at any age.

For me, I had my first baby at 38, I conceived on the second cycle of trying. Second pregnancy at 39 on the fourth cycle of trying which ended in a miscarriage. 2 cycles later I was pregnant again at 40 and he is now almost 2 weeks old.

Best of luck to you

Some vile comments. We have no idea if her medical history, nor should we. She's merely saying in her case she feels too old.

Probably being sensible and self aware

Yes, came here to say this. Nobody's business but hers.
