Cheryl Cole just said at 39 she's too old to have another biological baby. What's your thoughts?
I'm genuinely curious as someone who's nearly 38 I'm still trying for my first baby.
Can a healthy pregnancy be possible?
At 39 apparently half your eggs would be deemed chromosomally abnormal.
What's your experience on getting pregnant at this age?

Fifties is too old for teenagers still at school

Whys that then? I have a 10 year old and I’m 52…. What’s going to happen that I can’t handle?

LlynTegid · 24/01/2023 16:13

It is a private matter in my opinion and whether it is good depends on the woman.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 16:12

I think it is too old. 39 is not too old for a baby. Fifties is too old for teenagers still at school.

So it is too old or it isn't?

Liz1tummypain · 24/01/2023 16:13

I'm surprised that a celeb would think that way. I think medically its harder to conceive but as long as she can conceive I can't see the issue. Personally I think it's going to be an uphill struggle at that age. And I wouldn't want to be one of the oldest mummies at the school gate. But if anyone had a burning desire to raise a kid so long as they think they've got enough energy I think they should go for it.

BreviloquentBastard · 24/01/2023 16:13

I'm 32 and I feel too old now for a baby. Everyone is different and it's not really anyone else's business if someone has decided to stop. Certainly shouldn't stop anyone who does want more in their 30's.

I don't know what doctors say atm

Mum had me at 38. Her sisters and mum's side had healthy babies up to mid 40s. Most women I know have had babies close to 40. All been fine.

isn't the abortion rate higher in over 40s because of women thinkimg they can't get pregnant then?

The doctors and midwives weren't bothered about my age in the least. I wasn't even considered a higher risk pregnancy.

I asked to be induced on my due date as I'd read about increased risk of still birth post dates in older mothers, and they were happy to go along with that, but at that time didn't have a policy of induction for age alone (he came a few days early as it turned out.)

I had a crazy quick delivery and the midwife told me that I need to get myself in to the hospital "next time" at the first twinge - I just laughed at her but she said they had loads of 40+ mothers having just one more so never say never... (I said never 😂)

And my comment was to you.

😂

For me I've always said 37 is the latest I would have a baby. For me 38+ is too old to be having a child. 10 years and I would be 50 couldn't imagine having a pre teen-teen in my 50s.

Intrepidescape · 24/01/2023 16:12

My grandmother had a child when she was 44. The child was fine.

I wonder if she comes from a community that have their children younger ? She may be surrounded by women who have older teenagers at 39 so to her it seems too late. I’m not from then group myself and had my child at 41 with no problems so to me 39 is not too old. I think the average age for the first time mum is creeping up though so obviously becoming more common to wait.

walnutmarzipan · 24/01/2023 16:11

@Princesspollyyy My comment was to the OP

Ottil · 24/01/2023 16:10

I had my first at 37 and my last DC at 43. No dramas and a happy experience all round. We've all got our own story.

It really is different for every woman. There should be no judgements whatsoever.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/01/2023 16:10

If I already had children before 39- which I do- then I wouldn’t opt to have a toddler in my 30s.
Its circumstance and preference.
Biologically it’s obviously towards the later end of most women’s chances, no matter what stories you hear.

jtaeapa · 24/01/2023 16:08

I went into menopause at 39.

ditalini · 24/01/2023 16:08

I conceived dc2 as I turned 40. It took a few years, but despite failing to get pregnant age 36-39, 40 was the charm.

Tbh, it had been my personal cut-off point so my 40th birthday felt pretty miserable but I knew for my own sanity I couldn't just keep on trying indefinitely. We didn't have any fertility investigations as we already had ds1 and wouldn't have been able to afford any private treatment so had made the decision that it either happened naturally or it didn't.

The pregnancy and birth were textbook (high risk Down Syndrome screening result as would be the case for many 40 year olds based on age alone). Ds2 was a very easy baby, nightmare toddler, average 10 year old now!

naturalchiller · 24/01/2023 16:07

Had my one and only at 39.

Dream pregnancy (birth a bit tricky but cord was round neck, nothing to do with my age), healthy baby boy.

PollyAmour · 24/01/2023 16:06

Is Cheryl Cole actually only 39 though or is her real age a few years older?

39 is not too old to have a biological baby.

lipstickwoman · 24/01/2023 15:38

Some vile comments. We have no idea if her medical history, nor should we. She's merely saying in her case she feels too old.

Probably being sensible and self aware

This.

I personally think it’s wise.

Tecksupport · 24/01/2023 16:05

I think it's different for everyone. Im in my late 30s and personally feel too old to have any more kids now. However I already have 2 and don't feel any urge for more so it's maybe a psychological thing.

I know a few people who have had their first in their late 30s/early 40s and are awesome mums, but most had difficulty conceiving.

Rowthe · 24/01/2023 16:01

I'm 39.

Im not trying any more.

I dont want to risk having a child with health issues, we will obviously find it very difficult. I dont want to take the chance.

BigPurpleArm · 24/01/2023 16:00

My mum had me her first dc at 34, she tried for another baby after but was then in early menopause
She always has told me this and advised I may or may not face the same problems but she wishes she had started having babies earlier but went into the menopause earlier than she anticipated

I had my first dc at 24 and my second DC at 29. Financially I think we are done having babies and I'm early 30's

If Cheryl has fertility problems or early menopause etc then yes 39 may be too old for HER, or perhaps that's just her opinion on her own body- I don't think she is saying it's too old for anyone else!

ArseInTheDogBowl · 24/01/2023 15:59

I had mine at 24 and 26, 39 would absolutely feel too old for me. I think that's what she's saying, for her personally, it's too old.
