I don't know if there are any threads already started but I've just officially found out I've got PCOS this morning - I've always known deep down. Please tell me it's not all bad I'm feeling very sorry for myself.
We've been TTC for 6 months - only 3 cycles. I supposedly ovulated on CD36 (now CD43) this cycle. Gynae reckons not preg cos uterus lining would've thickened. (Had a scan this morning)

Any hints/tips on treatment/TTC?
How to deal with symptoms?

How did Posh spice and Jools Oliver manage to fall preg?

---------------------

Hi - this thread is a little out of date. We've got some more information on PCOS here. MNHQ

Hello Its so interesting reading everyones storys. Especially the ones who are getting help from their GP's. I am the very lucky mother of 2 (9 and 3). First not planned or expected!!! then it took us 6 years to conceive our other little angel! I have PCOS and OH has crap sperm!! We were lucky enough to go to BWH conception unit to be diagnosed but hated every second of it!! Had just signed up for IVF and was waiting for results of my smear test to ensure all ok when found out i was pregnant!!!! Now my overies are jingle jangling once again but know i will need some help as nearly 37 and can't afford to wait another 6 years. I am overweight (of course i blame PCOS and not the 6 packets of walkers i can eat!!)so have joined slimming world and even the gym ! So finally i get to the point of my story (hurrah, i hear you cry!) - can GP's give out clomid?? I have never even been offered metformin so would it be worth asking for that???

Moonlit · 25/02/2008 21:01

hattyyellow - I am glad the pant tricks are working for you.

Welcome bambilocket - I hope this is a lucky thread for all of us

fruitloop79 · 25/02/2008 15:15

I've also heard about skin tags. Someone on here mentioned it. I had two removed from my neck and I have a couple under my armpits. My GP had no idea it was related to PCOS

I found out I've got PCOS a couple of weeks ago, I'm 28 but very impatient! I've always had the hairyness [feel like a freak] and a few stubborn spots, luckily I'm not overweight but I still try to stick to GI as much as poss just to keep the weight down and it also makes me feel better/healthier. 12 years is such a long time I really admire you! DS was a surprise but I wasnt really using anything for 3 yrs before i fell pg. I'm hoping it wont take that long again this time around. The girls on here are so helpful. Attila is very knowledgable about PCOS if you need any help although after 12 years you probably know more than anyone!

Hi Fruitloop, yes, we've ttc naturally since having dd but without success, hardly surprising given that it took 12 years and ivf to have her although I do think i was briefly pregnant last summer, didn't work out. I do know lots of people with PCOS who get pregnant without going to IVF but for some of us that is what it takes. Losing weight definately helps but I find it really difficult especially trying to find that enthusiasm after living with the condition for so long. I've not got the hairyness or the acne thankfully but I do have skin tags on my face which are apparantly related to PCOS too. I don't know how old you are but I really need to go for IVF again as I am now 40 and so time is of the essence.

hattyyellow · 25/02/2008 14:40

ps my best diet tip has always been measuring the inches not using the scales...my weight fluctuates so much with the time of the month that i find seeing the inches come off much more tangible...

Moonlit tried the Dora the Explorer potty training trick with my twins - thank you! One got it and really went with it (we used charlie and lola pants - they love lola) the other had no worries weeing on poor lola's head..."don't worry mummee, justabita wee wee"

hattyyellow · 25/02/2008 14:36

Hi all

Wanted some reassurance...

Can anyone enlighten me as to the "official" advice on low GI and ttcing and PCOS? Or diet generally and PCOS..

My doctor didn't really go into details and my DH has said he can't see what difference low GI makes but I've read various stuff online about PCOS making your body break down sugar quicker and the insulin causing problems...or something...

Is it actually accepted by "medical science" that you can help counteract PCOS and improve chances of conception by diet and blood sugar even if you're not eligible for drugs/ovarian drilling etc yet?

What do other peoples doctors and specialists say?

Hi bambilocket have you TTC naturally since having your daughter? or did you decide to just go straight for IVF? I hadnt realised PCOS could be that bad!

bambilocket · 25/02/2008 14:13

Hi, can I join this thread? I've got PCOS, I was diagnosed about 12 years ago after unsuccessful 1st year ttc. Now have lovely daughter after IVF and am about to start IVF again to try for double bubble! I need to loose about 3 stone and would really appreciate the opportunity to share the pain! I've got the Fatbuster GI diet by Patrick Holford, I believe it's a bit old-fashioned now but it's worked for me in the past, if I actually stick to it I will loose weight! Good luck to us all.

Tigerschick · 25/02/2008 13:52

Hi all

Well, I bought the only GI diet book that they had in Asda this morning (yes I know that Asda isn't a recognised book shop but it's where I was and I'm tired of waiting to start this diet.) It's Rosmary Conley's Ultimate GI Jeans Diet. I've only scanned the recipes so far but they all seem workable and, in many cases, a lot more than I normally eat!

DH's best friend went thru a phase of drinking Slim Fast shakes - but he drank them as milkshakes, along with all his normal food

Hope everyone is well and coping OK.
No sign on my period yet ...

fruitloop79 · 25/02/2008 12:49

Hiya!

I'm sooooo tired today, I could barely open my eyes this morning. Probably al the crp food I ate over the weekend And moonlit* I didnt even have my fish n chips! Lovely sticky toffee pud though
Back the the old GI this morning though, I love my Sunday treats but my goodness I really feel the difference.

Tigerschick I also get (TMI) very white CM. Is that a PCOS thing? It's never really egg whitey.

DGG NO SLIM FAST LADY! I was addicted to those many years ago, I loved the strawberry ready made cans but I drank far too many! They're no good for reducing your sugar intake as they are laden with it. Fast fix diets are only good for losing weight for a particular day, not for ever! I used to do something called a Chemical Breakdown diet which was great for slimming for an occasion but my god I was STARVING!

Moonlit · 25/02/2008 09:22

I totally agree Atilla (long time no see, hope you are well?). Unfortunately I am speaking from experience . And you are right, the weight I lost was all back within a week. Also, I used to get very low sugar levels and would feel faint. I would hate another person to go through that.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 25/02/2008 07:13

I will say a big no also to the slim fast plan; it will just make you feel hungry!!. This is just temporary and the likelihood is once you stop these drinks the weight will return.

If you want to try an eating plan you're better off with low GI/GL rather than slimfast. You have done very well to date.

Moonlit · 24/02/2008 22:41

Dungungirl....pleeeeeeeeeease don't do the slim fast diet. It's bloody awful, and it won't shift enough weight to make a difference, especially if you have PCOS. The slim fast products are not for us hun.

You are doing so well with your exercise regimen. And I know your consultant will be impressed also. Please avoid the slim fast aisle on your shopping trip .

I know, I can't believe I didn't have a brownie.

Ok this might motivate you. My sister also has PCOS, She was a size 16 and is now a size 8/10. She lost her weight through shear sweat, blood and tears, the same way you are. She ate healthy food, exercised and stayed positive. At first the weight didn't shift to easily, then it just started falling off. Once you reach tat plateau it's harder, but I know your weight will come off.

No SLIM FAST OK!!!!!!!

X

DungunGirl · 24/02/2008 21:47

Hi everyone!

Dropped out of the loop a bit!
I do't tend to come on the web on the weekends but I am glad I did!!!

How was everyones weekend? Mine was rather crazy....jogging on saturday morning, then painted the kitchen with my DS in the afternoon! He was painting himself most the time!

Today we went on a 2 hour cycle ( uphill most of the way!) arrghhh!!! and then had a 3 year old birthday party to go to afterwards. So a full day!

Goodness Moonlit well done for resisting those chocolate brownies! Good on the willpower!

I am planning to start some of that slim fast stuff for a couple of weeks I think to try and make a drastic weight shift. I need to get this weight and the clock is ticking ticking ticking....tick tick tick....

How about everyone else?

Moonlit · 24/02/2008 20:51

Hi Tigerschick - I think we are twins . I bought my daughters knickers from Asda to, the Dora Explorer ones (because she loves Dora). I explained to her Dora mustn't get wet, so to keep Dora dry we pee pee in the potty. She totally understood. There have been a couple of accidents here and there but she is getting better. Now I have to get rid of her pacifer and make her sleep in her own bed. I want her more independent before her sibling turns up.

I am a housewife to, it happened by accident, but I love it!

My DD had the Baby Bjorn potty and the Baby Bjorn toilet seat, they are both brilliant and I highly recommend them.

I was having a moan on another thread, because my husband is getting bored of BDing. Can you believe it, a man complaining about SEX. My goodness what is the world coming to! . So I am off to Ann Summers tomorrow and will be ready for Cycle 16, as I think I have missed this round. Last BDing was on Monday and I ovulated yesterday.

You had fish and chips. I think Fruitloop was having fish and chips today. I had a persian meal for lunch and have not been able to eat anything since. I am stuffed like a chicken .

Wow...bit of a long post.

xx

Tigerschick · 24/02/2008 11:55

Hi ladies

Welcome, hattyyellow. Twins always sound like so much fun but I can imagine that it is really hard work. A friend who I met in ante-natal had twins the day before my dd was born. She says that she always wanted 2 dc and just got them in one go so isn't planning on having any more. I have another friend who has twin boys who are 4 1/2 and another boy who is 15mo. She isn't sure that she's ready to stop yet either - I guess it's a matter of what suits each family.

Can't believe how chatty you all were on Friday night! We moved the puta then. It was in the same room as the tv, which is upstairs, but we've moved it into the kitchen now so that dd can have a larger area for her toys. It seems weird to be MNing without the tv on in the background.

Moonlit - we cound be twins! It's my 30th at the end of April! DD is now, suddenly, showing a lot more interest in potty training. She had 2 wees on the potty this morning. I'm going to Asda tomorrow so will pick up a few knickers for her and one of those toilet seat thingies. I think that it might be better to get her thoroughly trained before dc#2 shows any sign of showing up. I have a friend who started training her ds1 when she was 7 months pg. He was doing really well but had a major relapse when her ds2 was born - and understandably so.

Fruitloop and Dungungirl, hope you are both well today.

Well, I gave up trying to predict what my body is doing many moons ago... that said ... I have on and off achey boobs; dull period pain type aches, but only very slight; on and off ache in the small of my back and loads of very white CM (sorry - TMI) Goodness only knows what it all means but I keep expecting my period to start. Ah well, we shall see.

Oh - last night I had fish and chips and a can of Stella
Well, England did beat France so I felt I deserved a treat

fruitloop79 · 23/02/2008 08:04

Hey hatty I think Atkins makes your breath smell because of the ketones your body produces through not getting enough nutrients - or something like that. You know when someone hasn't eaten anything they get that horrible ketoney smell? I'm sure someone will know better than me but I'm sure it's something along those lines.....

OP posts:
Moonlit · 23/02/2008 01:04

Fruitloop it's ok offer them naughty foods so that they pregnant and fat .....we are so evil.

Just came back from my SIL. When I offered her a brownie, she was like 'no I won't have any' and gave them to the kids, her hubby and my hubby instead. Then I went in the kitchen and caught her stuffing her face. She was saying 'they are so nice thanks', whilst crumbs were hanging out of the side of her mouth. She then said 'aren't you going to have any?' I was like 'no, i had some at home (big fat lie)'. Anyway, I swear her arse grew right in front of my eyes . I think this low GI diet is making me evil .

Hey hattyyellow, don't worry we will all encourage you. Attila is great, and Fruitloop is hilarious and there is Dungungirl and Tigerchick, basically they are all very nice.

By the way, I have sleep issues, hence the late post

hattyyellow · 22/02/2008 21:25

Cheers girls for the welcome

Why does Atkins make your breath smell, I've never figured the science out behind that...?

Moonlit seriously impressed with you making chocolate brownies and ...not eating ANY of them?? Wow!

But that's encouraging that you both concieved on low carb diets..helps me keep on going with mine! I do actually like brown rice though..I think it takes you so long to chew you feel like you must be full by now!

fruitloop79 · 22/02/2008 20:33

Oh yeah, I forgot, all my mates are pg so they're gonna get fat anyway hahahaha

OP posts:
fruitloop79 · 22/02/2008 20:32

Ooh, that's made me think of a crafty plan (he he). Make everyone else around us fat, that way we look better next to them, ah ha ha ha ha (evil laughy way)

OP posts:
Moonlit · 22/02/2008 20:26

Ps I just made chocolate brownies! I am not going to eat them, I am going to drop them around my SIL, so she becomes a fat cow instead of me. I always do that when I am on a diet, I bake and bake and give it away .

Moonlit · 22/02/2008 20:22

Fruitloop you are hilarious! My DD thinks I have gone mad, because I am laughing so much. Actually, I looked fab when I was on the Atkins and I went through 10 bottles of mouth wash. So my DH was ok! Otherwise we would not have been able to conceive my beautiful DD .

fruitloop79 · 22/02/2008 20:09

Actually Atkins makes the perfect contraceptive, Makes you're breath and skin so bad no right minded male would go near. Unless he was desperate of course
