I don't know if there are any threads already started but I've just officially found out I've got PCOS this morning - I've always known deep down. Please tell me it's not all bad I'm feeling very sorry for myself.
We've been TTC for 6 months - only 3 cycles. I supposedly ovulated on CD36 (now CD43) this cycle. Gynae reckons not preg cos uterus lining would've thickened. (Had a scan this morning)

Any hints/tips on treatment/TTC?
How to deal with symptoms?

How did Posh spice and Jools Oliver manage to fall preg?

Hi - this thread is a little out of date. We've got some more information on PCOS here. MNHQ

Dungangirl

I would retest but I have a suspicion that your DH saw an evaporation line on that test.

I sincerely hope I am wrong here. Why don't you do a clearblue digital test, that will say for definate.

DungunGirl · 12/03/2008 10:27

Hi Dozymare and Sarah
Hmmm shaving pubes....not sure I am that sold on that idea...the idea of being stubbly down there doesn't fill me with joy!

Sarah - wow...you have been through a lot babes. I know what you mean about the losing weight though, my BMI is 36 and the hospital told me i needed to get it down to under 35 before they would treat.

fruitloop
I tested again last night...couldn't help myself
I am really confused..nothing showed up after 2 minutes so I walked off and assumed it was obviously a BFN.

However, my DH went back to the stick about 15 minutes later and was shouting from the bathroom ' Did you wait the full 10 minutes foer the result????'.

Thought to myself...'crazy man'...lugged myself upstairs to find a grinning husband.

I am now unsure....

There was a very faint line in the positive window....and I still haven't got my AF yet.....but...was the test left too long? Is it a fake positive?

I am not going to get happy yet.

I will 3 more days before testing again.

OHhhhhh fingers crossed! If it is BFP then the fertility nurse can keep her 35 BMI!!! Hahahah!

My temps are still high today - a little lower than yesterday but still 36.7 c.

ANyway, catch you laters!

fruitloop79 · 12/03/2008 09:55

Hi dozymare and sarah
dozy ummmm, did I read that right? shave your pubes? lol is that a superstitious thing?

sarah I'm so pleased you find temping beneficial, I've been warned against it but I thought I'd give it a try for a couple of cycles. If my temps are correct then I Ov'ed on day 71 which would make sense as my last cycle was 88 days so I would've ov'ed at about the same time. I'm so pleased your seem to have found Mr Right! As for the hair, how do you cope with it psychologically? It's always really got me down, I feel like a freak. I get so incredibly jealous of my smooth, delicate, feminine skinned friends .
Also what's Saw Palmetto? I've just googled it and found a load of sites about men's hair loss and prostrate trouble. I've got Agnus Castus but it's supposedly not wise to take it if you havnt been prescibed it and I cant afford to go to a herbalist so it's still sitting in my meds box unopened. Also Cinnamon and Chronium?

dungun how's your temp this morning?
TC oh I hope AF comes on her own, It's great you can have another go at Clomid and metformin!

Very new here, haven't read entire thread, but thought my PCOS story might be of interest to some. . .

My doc back in the U.S. suspected PCOS when I was 25 and put me on Dianette. It was great for the acne and body hair. I married a British guy and moved here in 2002 at 26. I stopped the pill in August 2005 and have been charting ever since on Fertility Friend. Can't really say I was TTC as hubby is virtually asexual (which in part lead to our separation).

Now at 31 1/2, I am nearly divorced (Decree Absolute on 3rd April!!), with a fabulous partner who wants to (in no particular order) marry me/ make babies /buy property/ adopt rescue dogs.

My cycles were averaging 50 days for a while, and temping allowed me to confirm that I do in fact ovulate. My first GP here did some blood test and said I didn't have PCOS. My next GP (two years later) sent me for a scan as she thought I might have a fibroid. The scan showed enlarged ovaries and the polycystic appearance. I was also fat, spotty, and hairy. So I was diagnosed. GP started me on Metformin (still taking).

Since coming off Dianette I am one hairy beast. Fortunately not so much on my face, but I frankly have the ass-crack of a man (which I didn't have before!). Also have had acne trouble (the nasty cystic kind) since my teens, which has gotten worse off the Dianette.

And my weight....my BMI is over 40. Hubby and I were referred to fertility clinic, who said to lose weight before Clomid. We separated so I quit going.

DP and I quit using contraception about 7 months ago. Since being with him (and having a hell of a lot more sex), I've ovulated more often (confirmed by temping) and my cycles have become shorter (under 40 days vs 50 to 116 at worst). However, this coincides with my reading Collette Harris's PCOS Diet book and starting myself on Saw Palmetto, Agnus Castus, Omega 3-6-9, and Chromium (I was also taking Cinnamon for a while). So not sure what's made the difference--Sex or Supplements?

I know some say you shouldn't bother to temp with PCOS, but for me it's always shown pretty clearly when I ovulate/don't ovulate. Because of temping, I've also figured out that I have a short luteal phase, so I'm researching progesterone cream for that. Anyone tried it? Where did you get it?

Whew! Is anyone still awake?

dozymare · 11/03/2008 21:12

Christ, my spelling is dreadful - apologies I am knackered!

dozymare · 11/03/2008 21:11

Hi Girls,

Apologies not read whole thread but wanted to offwe some words of hope - I was diagnoised with severe PCOS and Underactive Thyroid 5 years ago and told that chances of concieving were slim - have had 2 healthy boys and am pregnant with 3rd despite falling into the obese category. I am on 1500 mg metformin (500 3 times a day) and 150mg of thyroxine. I used persona as well a temp to chart my ovulating (only had 5 periods though last year) and if any of you want if FFp please contact me as I would love to help someone else. My other tip - shave your pubs - worked all 3 times for me! Any wuestions, please ask I hope I canhelp.

Tigerschick · 11/03/2008 16:07

Hi all
Finally heard back from my specialist. They want me to do another cycle of Metfomin + Clomid 150mg. I've got to wait until Monday to see if I have a natural period. Otherwise I'll be taking progesterone from next week.
If that cycle doesn't work it'll be injections - but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'm signing off for a few days as we have my parents staying. Hope you all have a good week.

DungunGirl · 11/03/2008 16:01

Hey fruitloop

Yeah...I guess my body could have decided to ovulate after all...My scan was on day 18 of my cycle as my usual cycles are 32 days, longest 35.

I got my temp spike on day 29 ! I am on day 40 today!
I don;t use FF, I just do it the ole fashion way on a paper BBT graph I printed off the internet.

I don;t know if you work in celcius or farenheit - I work in celcius and my temps have been going up and up and up since day 29. This morning was the highest yet!

36.84 celcius this morning! Or 98.3 farenheit! On day 40!

I am being the time old pessimist and assuming it is PCOS mucking me about...however I am secretly being a little careful as you never know!!!

tootiredtothink · 11/03/2008 14:51

Cheers fruitloop, have bid on e-bay so should be getting it soon (also going for the sticks!) xxx

fruitloop79 · 11/03/2008 13:25

hey dungun well I'm not sure how much info those sonographers can get from a scan cos mine thought I might have ov'd when I had my scan which was on the 4th Feb so clearly wrong as I'm still waiting for AF! lol!
I think either PCOS is messing you around (and I sincerely hope it's not or it's got me to deal with!!!) or you're well and truly up the duff!
Are you on FF? do your temps show you have ov'd? - sorry if you've already said, i'm really ill with flu

OP posts:
DungunGirl · 11/03/2008 11:32

Hi ladies

Still no sign of AF....

I keep feeling like it is going to come but it doesn't...ohhh i am sooooo coonfusedddd

fruitloop79 · 11/03/2008 08:34

hey tootired try this It's a great online chart which does everything for you. You just add in your temps every morning. Also you can get a BBT (basal body thermometer) from here

It's really fascinating to see all the changes. Not everyone with PCOS can temp as PCOS can affect it but why not give it a go for 1 or 2 cycles to see if you get some sort of pattern?

OP posts:
tootiredtothink · 10/03/2008 20:48

Hi fruitloop and dungungirl - I'm here!!! As i still haven't got an appointment with doc i want to see i have just been on to see how you guys are doing - and i am intrigued how to work out these charts you do? Strangely I have gone as far as going for IVF but have never done the temp charts etc. As its quiet any chance of getting me started? Are there books i need or sites i should go on?

DungunGirl · 10/03/2008 20:34

Hi fruitloop

It has gone awfully quite on here! Just you and me today!

I have tested twice and both BFN

However, I will wait and see if there is still nothing in 3 days time because that would take me to 42 days, which would be 14 days from my temperature shift.

If still no sign of AF, then I will be very confused! [hmmm]

fruitloop79 · 10/03/2008 18:12

Hey everyone, how are you all today? any testers in our midst? dungun?

Well, my temps are still through the roof due to being ill , I'm coughing so much I'm gonna have abs of steel soon! I wish I'd bloody get better so I can make some sort of sense of these (possible) post ovulation temps . Paracetamol not doing much to help but too scared to take anything stronger

OP posts:
fruitloop79 · 10/03/2008 09:15

Hey dungungirl I would test if I were you!
My temps are through the roof at the moment, I think I should be clinically dead! haha I do feel like poo though I'm refusing to say on FF that I have a fever cos I like looking at the temps - looks impressive! he he
mumblemum I'm not superstitious either but Wow! What a coincidence .

OP posts:
DungunGirl · 10/03/2008 08:58

Hi guys!

Hope you all had a great weekend.

Fruitloop - you positive attitude is wonderful. I really need some of that right now. I think I freaked out my sister yesterday by getting of tearful when I was telling her about my fear of trying so hard to lose weight to be told on the 19th to go away and lose more before they will treat me!

Anyway, I am having a weird cycle this month. This is the first time my cycle has gone beyond 35 days EVER! Today is day 39. My usual cycles are 32 days. SO going by that I am 7 days late and going by 35 days I am 4 days late.

My temperatures are remaining high as well....

BUT this is the big BUT....my scan on the 18th day of my cycle showed that my biggest follicle was only 9mm and they were pretty sure I wouldn't ovulate this month...

So what is up?

I keep thinking maybe...then I slap myself and think...no wait..maybe the PCOS is just starting to really muck things up and I am heading for a 40 dat cycle.

who knows....

mumblemum · 09/03/2008 22:01

Hi, I'm coming in to this late & haven't read the whole thread, but thought I'd just add my experience.

I have PCOS & had been on & off dianette for a few years before TTC. In the off times (stops working for me after about 6 months & my normal horrific periods reassert themselves), I did natural family planning, which is kind of a rational scientific version of the rhythm method, charting temps but also mucus & cervical position. I realised I was only ovulating every other month, plus my cycle got really erratic, particularly when I was stressed.

Anyway, 18 months or so ago, dianette stopped working again and dp & I figured we'd try nothing & see what happened for a couple of years, by which time we'd have lots of charts showing my mayhem cycle & could go through worst case IVF etc but still not be totally ancient. 3 months later, I was up the duff, and now have beautiful 7 month old.

There was one thing that did seem to change my cycle & make it more regular, it's weird, and I'm totally not superstitious, but it was leaving my curtains open to let the full moon in just at full moon, or sleeping with a nightlight on if it was cloudy. Whenever I remembered, my cycle was a neat 28 days, and the month I got pregnant our bedroom curtain rod collapsed & we couldn't be arsed to put it back up!

I read something about it, a book called 'The Wise Wound', a bit old-school periods are great (not mine!) stuff, but had an interesting bit about research into sea birds and how the base brain that controls basic functions like reproduction is the really old bit of brains that even birds have, and kind of works like an eye and responds to direct light on it. There was something about an experiment painting black dots on cormorants' heads, that made them forget to mate, or migrate or something. Anyway, worth a go, but mostly relax and enjoy the sex , once you've got a bub it'll become a distant memory!

fruitloop79 · 08/03/2008 11:00

Thanks moonlit I like a bit of encouragement! I'm not giving up! I will never admit defeat! hahaha, like I said, how can I give up when we are going to have a big family!

OP posts:
Moonlit · 08/03/2008 09:55

Morning ladies.

Welcome to the newbies on this 'hot' thread . I would love to try acupuncture to, but I agree with Fruitloop it's a bit expensive.

I think JayneF is right, we let TTC take over our lives, so much so that it becomes an obsession. My PCOS and TTC obsession is starting to take its toll too. I think I to need to relax, and let nature take it's course. But then again I have PCOS.......and it's obvious I need to help to get pregnant this time around. It's so frustrating. Anyway enough of the PCOS self pity.

Hey Tigerschick - really no IVF or IUI??? I definitely want to try IUI and if that doesn't work then have ago at IVF. Only thing is I am petrified of needles . That might be a toughie! Definitely let us know what the specialist says. Good luck xxx

Fruitloop - you still hanging in there? Hey listen you know your cycle better than anyone. If you got pregnant on a long cycle before, then you can get pregnant on another long cycle. Don't give up hun. xx

Tigerschick · 08/03/2008 09:08

Hi all

Wow! I've never been on one of the 'hot threads' before! Well, not one as exclusive as this

Hope everyone is OK today. DH and I had a chat last night about what we want to do in the long term. We have ruled out IUI and IVF so if it gets to the stage where one of those is offered then we are going to stop and go bach to ttc naturally. I've just got a long wait until Monday when my specialist is ringing to let me know the results of her meeting with the consultant ... We'll see.

fruitloop79 · 08/03/2008 08:48

oh yeah, do you all realise we made the front page on MN?

OP posts:
fruitloop79 · 08/03/2008 08:47

Wow, JayneF what an inspiring story!

How's everyone today?

OP posts:
JayneF · 07/03/2008 20:04

I was treated for PCOS for twenty years. When I wanted to start a family I was "old" anyway but started on the usual fertility tests and examinations etc.

Whilst waiting for an appointment for an investigative op, we decided not to bother trying as such and just got on with life until the date for the op came through. THat was a big help as previously I was wishing my life away in cycles.

We conceived naturally, within twelve months and never had to ghave operation. Second child was concieved to our amazement eight months after the bith of the first and is currently three days overdue.

Tip to retain sanity:...stay positive and relax, avoid duty sex (if you know what I mean) and know that there are loads and loads of girls out there who have been right there, exactly where you are now.

Good luck.
