Positive tests but no baby

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 04:30

I have now had 6 positive tests, however when I went for a scan they were unable to see anything from either an abdominal or internal scan. 2 of these tests were taken whilst I was there (and positive).

I do take promethazine which can cause false positives however would it cause this many?

I do not feel pregnant at all and witb the date of my last period I should be around 6 weeks.

I am absolutely petrified of potential ectopic pregnancy. I have an appointment on Friday for a scan and bloods, I’ve had no pain etc or bleeding.

any help would be appreciated!

@Lola230998 if you ever need anyone to talk to feel free to message me.

You don't sound heartless at all. You're being honest xxx

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 21:26

@dragonfly16 thank you, I honestly have no idea what to expect I just know I don’t want surgery :(

I had a pregnancy of unknown origin years ago. No symptoms, positive tests and slightly increasing HCG levels. They offered me surgery or methotrexate injections. Had the injections and was absolutely fine, went in to have a normal pregnancy afterwards.

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 21:16

@Blanketwars I will definitely have a look thank you. I really appreciate the support and hope it’s resolved soon 🫶🏼

@Proamble yes im on the waiting list for an IUD, I take Noriday religiously but I feel it maybe failed for some unknown reason.

I’m hoping I get answers and treatment on Friday.

Thank you 💕

@cakeislife1234 i can cope with this, as I say I was initially having a termination so in some ways I don’t have the loss of a wanted baby which helps (I’m sorry if this sounds heartless).

It’s reassuring to hear you can have an ectopic with no symptoms and it’s easily treated, injections are totally fine I just hate blood tests! But that’s something I’m going to have to be brave for.

Thank you so much x

I’m a bit crap at techie stuff and can’t link, but there is a charity called the ectopic pregnancy trust that I’ve just found on Google. They appear to have a helpline and other sources of support. Maybe give them a look?

You’re doing really well OP, it must be really scary. Don’t suffer by yourself ask someone to come and stay with you tonight xx

Proamble · 08/11/2022 21:09

Yes, also had no ectopic symptoms either. It was honestly fine, I was also scared, but the injections were ok, and all worked out. Have you thought about the IUD going forward? My friends swear by it!!

cakeislife1234 · 08/11/2022 21:06

I had no symptoms either really. I had a positive test, then big bleed 2 weeks later so assumed it was a third chemical pregnancy, took a test 2 weeks later as directed by GP before a referral to the recurrent miscarriage clinic and it was positive.

But no pain or any usual ectopic symptoms at all. The fact they can't see anything on a scan is reassuring that there's hopefully nothing in your tube to rupture.

I have my fingers crossed for you that your HcG levels are going down naturally so you don't need any intervention. The methotrexate wasn't bad, I felt tired and nauseous for about 5 days after but then was fine xxx

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 21:03

@cakeislife1234 this is what I’m praying for really, it’s just the weirdest situation I have absolutely no pregnancy symptoms other than a missed period.

thank you x

@Blanketwars i have my friends and the father is being incredible, but nobody can be at the appointment with me on Friday as its a very early time. I also don’t want to drive anyone mad with the thousands of questions I have. I am going to question if there is any support available as I’m absolutely beside myself, this wait is horrific. I slept an hour last night, I’m running on propranolol and adrenaline I think.

I live alone so have a fear I’ll just collapse and no one will know lol. Im never ever like this and usually very level headed so it’s scary. MSI is who referred me and they haven’t been particularly helpful.

Just so glad I have no pregnancy symptoms and don’t feel unwell.

i really appreciate your support thank you x

OP who do you have supporting you? Is there anyone around to be with you?

You’re obviously very very stressed and sound like you’re wound up tighter than a tick. Have you any family or a support worker you can call?

cakeislife1234 · 08/11/2022 20:56

I had a pregnancy of unknown location in April/May. I was getting positive pregnancy tests and had HCG levels floating around 300 for a week or so. Because they couldn't see anything on the scan I had methotrexate injections, that stopped the pregnancy from growing (wherever it was) and after 3 months I was back to normal

If they can't see anything on a scan it's highly unlikely they would decide to operate as they wouldn't know where to look.

Please try not to worry, I know it's easy to say, but if the doctors were that worried about you then you'd be being seen sooner and more urgently xxx

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:53

my periods aren’t regular however this is definitely longer than usual x

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:52

Thank you I’m hoping this is all it is. I also have a fear of blood tests just to top all this off!

Never been so stressed in my life x

I wouldn't worry too much.

You are taking a medication that can cause false positives.

A scan has found no evidence of pregnancy.

You have no symptoms.

You have reliably been taking contraception.

The most likely conclusion is that it's a false positive caused by the medication. A quick Google shows that it is indeed a thing with that medication. Hopefully you'll get some clarity after the blood tests Flowers

OP has not had a period for 8 weeks .. I think that's a symptom

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:51

My only other option is a chemical pregnancy as I had some very minimal bleeding when I went to the toilet a couple of times on the 12th October.

However, would I still be having positive pregnancy tests?

My scan appointments were for a termination (please no judgment I have extremely
valid reasons) - so this is just terrifying as I want the situation to stop.

I know obviously these are all questions to ask on Friday. But my mind is running away with me. I’m terrified

I really don’t know, I’m clutching at straws, the idea of a potential ectopic and surgery terrifies me

Yes I can understand that - I was the same quite terrified.
You don't know for sure as yet so don't panic about that now, wait to see what the experts and bloods say and they will do more internal scan at epu.
I would call the epu and ask for the appointment to be brought forward.

In regards to the op I was also very scared but I was told if I didn't go for surgery within a few hours I would be dead so all the worry of that goes away when it comes to it, your life is more important, and it's all very safe and quick.
But like I said don't worry about that now as only the experts at the epu can diagnose you we can only offer our support and experiences x

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:33

No, I’ve had an abdominal and internal scan and they said they couldn’t see anything so have referred me on to the early pregnancy unit x

Lola230998 · 08/11/2022 20:32

I’ll be honest this wasn’t a planned pregnancy I am on contraception which I take religiously, the idea of being pregnant alone terrifies me - let alone with complications.

Do you mind me asking did you have pregnancy symptoms? I’ve had nothing x

OP posts:
Lillybobs86 · 08/11/2022 20:32

I don't think it's the promethezine I think your pregnant.

My ectopic was discovered at 6 weeks, until then they couldn't see anything suspicious, only just about could see a tiny small shadow of something slightly abnormal the day I turned 6 weeks.

Yes I agree with above the only way is blood test comparisons, although that won't tell the location of the pregnancy just the rate it's developing, it's a waiting game unfortunately for something to show up on the scan.

Did they do bloods after the scan?

I feel for you I went through all of this in the summer and the wait and the unknown was horrendous.. I hope you get some answers and that they look into this thoroughly.

SouperNoodle · 08/11/2022 20:30

I'm sorry you're going through this! I really hope you get some answers and good news xx

It’s so unlikely you’ll need surgery honestly! And even if you do it only reduces chances of conception by such a small amount!! It’s amazing how our bodies work, the tube can just float to the other ovary. Honestly I don’t think I really knew how amazing our bodies are until I went through this and read up. I was petrified too, I had an ectopic and had the injection and it was fine as they caught it early. No side effects, everything back to normal, still have all my tubes and ovaries. Please don’t worry!!
