I hear a lot of people saying they don't want September babies or August babies because the either start late or are the youngest in the class. Do people really care or would you just be happy with a baby?

I’m an August baby and love my summer birthday (and was mostly top of the class - anecdote rather than data). I never felt impacted or otherwise being one of the youngest, it just was. I assumed I would have summer babies, DH also August. No planning involved though. They are Jan, Feb and March.

@DuesToTheDirt

We gave it no thought to conception dates whatsoever and nearly got a Christmas day baby Shock.
I wasn't bothered either and had one Christmas Eve. Luckily she likes her Christmassy birthday!
PattyPan · 20/01/2022 18:48

I'd rather not give birth or be at the peak of a pregnancy in July or August because of the heat. But conceiving at all is obviously more important than the month.

connal · 20/01/2022 18:42

Can't believe people think that much about it and not just think of the fact they are lucky to get a healthy baby no matter what month it is due. I've been TTC for years and don't care if it's a December baby or not as long as it's healthy that's all that matters to me.

cptartapp · 20/01/2022 18:31

Yes. I aimed for a winter baby with the first and an early spring baby with the second (to avoid hyperemesis on holiday!). Caught very quickly both times so bang on.
I'm afraid I didn't want a summer born for all the tales you hear about academic achievement etc.
A dreadful reason really. But coincidentally or not, both DC summer born friends seemed to struggle, and hated being the 'last' to do anything, eg, driving, drinking etc.

MrsJ6921 · 20/01/2022 18:25

At this rate just to actually get pregnant would be nice and to have a healthy baby

oncemoreunto · 20/01/2022 18:23

I was due for a September birth, felt smug.
Dc turned out to be twins, so they arrived in August.
Best laid plans!

wingingit33 · 20/01/2022 16:35

My kids are April and May and dc3 due next month. The May baby doesn't like being a "young" one which she isn't but statistically more of her year group friends will be older. They both get nice spring days for birthdays to break up from Xmas. This February baby will an experience!

becca3210 · 20/01/2022 16:21

Wanted an Autumn/Winter baby as worked better for teaching ended up with an April delight! Don't care for baby 2 would be happy for whenever.

MrsHGWells · 20/01/2022 16:21

Sept-December babies born babies get a massive head start at school. Boys keep pace with early maturing girls. Our class had a noticeable spilt between Sept/ Jan born & those summer born June-August.

Genetics and parenting play a part, but often August babes often are typically smaller and just nearly a whole year behind their class mates. Sadly this does impact the child’s confidence. Our baby is Feb and managed to keep within top set.

If you have no fertility issues, and you want to plan - absolutely I would again.. I would plan with schooling and general family birthday clusters in mind.

if you want a happy, healthy baby no matter when.. go for it, whenever the mood strikes.

thislittlebird · 20/01/2022 16:05

Basically what @JulesRimetStillGleaming said. I certainly thought about preferences in the past, but no longer have that luxury.

cloudyrain · 20/01/2022 16:03

I didn't think about when I wanted my DC birthday to be, for the first we decided at Christmas we would start TTC and so stopped using precautions DC1 was born early December the following year. For the next we decided during our summer holiday when DC was around 18 months, DC2 was born the following June. They are now both adults and apart from the few years when we were able to hold garden parties for DC2 t hasn't made a lot of difference. I think it helps that my birthday is near DC1 and DH has his within days of DC2 so it is all familiar.

As for schooling DC2 didn't start reception until Jan they turned 5. By then end of Year 1 they were doing as well as DC1 and were in the top quarter of the year.

The only children I know that have had issues are the premature babies born in the summer July/August who were due October/November.

polavary · 20/01/2022 15:54

Imagine having the chance to choose

Namenic · 20/01/2022 15:52

Tried to avoid late summer (June, July, aug) - as would be young in the school year. Dd was born early Dec. Despite our family getting covid, she has been fine this winter so far

JanuaryPinks · 20/01/2022 15:48

@Glitterspy

We gave it no thoughts at all and have had 2 winter babies. Apart from having indoor parties (which are always fine btw) there’s no issue at all, one is very close to Christmas and that doesn’t bother them or us.

I have a very “organised” (narcissistic) family member who purposefully planned her firstborn to be as close to the start of the school year as possible in order to cream the supposed “advantages” of being the biggest and oldest in the year. The child is loud, obnoxious and a real prig, and not noticeably cleverer or more advanced than her younger peers. Whether that’s down to birth timing or the arrogance of knowing she has such “advantages” I don’t know.

Sounds like you don’t like your family member or her child, but either way birth date is completely irrelevant. Being older doesn’t make you a dick.

It’s a fact though that, statistically speaking, being older in the school year confers an advantage which persists throughout the school years. There’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting that advantage for your child if it’s something you can control. And no better or worse than choosing to avoid Christmas or a month when lots of people in the family have birthdays.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 20/01/2022 15:33

I've been trying to conceive for years now so whilst I did think about it initially, now just having a baby at any time would be amazing and no longer expected/ taken for granted.

Katela18 · 20/01/2022 15:31

I planned for a spring baby as my brother has a christmas birthday and always hated it.

I was due early March, baby arrived Dec 28th. Unfortunately you can't always plan even if you think you have!

SquigglePigs · 20/01/2022 15:13

I didn't want an August baby but we'd been trying for long enough that when it came to the point where we'd have had to stop trying for a month or so to avoid it I decided I didn't care so much after all. As it is I have a December baby. I was also aware that even if you plan, baby can have other ideas (friends with babies 1-3 months early) so it's not always up to you anyway.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 20/01/2022 15:10

Couldn't give a hoot what month I conceived in. I'd just be happy to fall Pregnant and stay Pregnant

EgSk · 20/01/2022 15:01

Before trying to conceive I cared . I had plans to avoid having a December baby. However after a miscarriage I was so heartbroken that I didn’t care when baby was born and kept trying every month regardless.

miltonj · 20/01/2022 15:01

I have a September born and my next is due in august. I can't imagine it mattering much in the grand scheme of things.

rhowton · 20/01/2022 15:01

I purposely waited for my December period to finish before I tried to conceive and I have a September baby. With my second, I tried in August thinking a June baby would be nice and DD came a few days early so ended up being a May baby. I actively didn't want a July/August/Nov/Dec/Jan baby and I was luckily enough to fall pregnant first time with each.

I fully understand that for some women it doesn't happen this way.

roarfeckingroarr · 20/01/2022 14:56

Yup, wanted an autumn baby and DS arrived mid October. My best friend did similar and has a September baby. We want them to be one of the older kids in the class, hoping it might give a bit of an advantage, that will then increase their confidence and give them the best start that way. There's obviously no guarantees and I wouldn't put off ttc to wait for an ideal month.

Didn't think about it for DC1.

After TTC DC2 for 2 years, one MC and no luck, I'd take any month.
