I hear a lot of people saying they don't want September babies or August babies because the either start late or are the youngest in the class. Do people really care or would you just be happy with a baby?

@StampOnTheGround

I was also an August baby and in the top set for everything at school and absolutely loved having my birthday in the summer holidays. The only annoyance was the year I was waiting to turn 18 but it didn't really matter too much.
Yes, 2 of my best friends are July & August and were always in the top set for everything. I am September and there was never a difference between us at all, except they had to wait to drive!
SevenAndEightt · 28/01/2022 11:23

I had an august baby and this time I avoided ttc as wanted to avoid it again simply because I suffered horrendously with the heat but also on the postnatal ward as it was boiling and I was severely dehydrated and all my iv lines kept coming out as I was drenched in sweat and the tape wouldn’t hold etc it was hell

I didn’t give it any thought with my two children but having one winter (Dec) and one late spring (April) I much preferred the winter baby for breastfeeding/all the carrying... breastfeeding and winding DS when it was a very hot and sunny May/June was HORRIFIC and I spent most of my time in just my knickers in front of a fan whilst trying to get him to nap Grin

StampOnTheGround · 28/01/2022 11:16

Avoided December at all costs, anybody I know with a birthday round then absolutely hates it.

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/01/2022 11:15

I’m pretty regular so worked out my next due dates (if fall pregnant) are basically big family birthday, just before Christmas, crappy point in Jan. Not ideal!

Marmarind · 28/01/2022 11:14

Don't want November - February.

Too many things going on at that time without adding another birthday

BiscuitLover3678 · 28/01/2022 11:14

It’s taking us long this time. We do have a preference and I’m not sure what I’ll do in a few months as really don’t want an early Jan baby. But I doubt I’ll keep waiting considering it hasn’t happened yet!

Exhausteddog · 28/01/2022 11:10

Being pregnant in a uk heatwave (30 degrees for most of the last month of pregnancy) was not ideal but on the plus side I had about 4 outfits on rotation that dried about 10 minutes after hanging them on the line.

Decaffe · 28/01/2022 11:09

When we started out on this journey I was thinking I’d avoid a July/August birthdate.

Now that conception is proving much more elusive than we thought, we just want a child and wouldn’t care when their birthday was.

Exhausteddog · 28/01/2022 11:05

I gave it no thought with DC 1. Then going to my ante natal class a lot of people were hoping their babies were late. I was a bit Confused about that until they said it was because they wanted them to be September babies and thus oldest in the school year. I had never even thought of this. (Most didn't get their wish so we all have August babies)
Having a summer birthday is great in some respects - outdoor parties, no school etc it often means DD can't celebrate with friends because people are away on holiday.
DS had autumn birthday and I think he would have really struggled starting school at the same age DD was, but obviously all children are different. DD hasn't had any problems at school, but I'm aware as she gets older she'll be last to learn to drive, legally go to pubs/clubs etc.

SSMH · 28/01/2022 10:32

We have discussed this and will try for a baby that is born Q4 of the year due to academic reasons (hope it will be an advantage!) but we fully appreciate that a baby at any time is a blessing Smile

Nemorth · 21/01/2022 14:11

I suppose for school dates it depends where you live. In Scotland the year group runs from 1st March to 28/29 Feb. So 1st March babies are the oldest and Feb babies are the youngest.

Dec/Jan/Feb can automatically defer entry to P1 and keep their nursery place. Sep/Oct/Nov babies have to apply to defer and may lose their nursery place.

I didn't mind the month, just went with the flow.

Glitterygreen · 21/01/2022 14:00

My DH is a Christmas Day baby and loves it, has always done, but I guess others may feel differently. I wouldn't be against a December baby but it's a bloody expensive month as it is so wouldn't be my first choice!

December is actually quite a nice time to have a birthday as everyone is feeling festive and up for a celebration...far better than January in that respect!

But both my SCs have birthdays within 2 weeks of Christmas and it is just so, so hard to afford alongside their Christmas presents and everybody else's. Also means they get a load of gifts within a couple of weeks and then nothing for the rest of the year, which is a bit rubbish.

oneconcernedmama · 21/01/2022 13:58

It took us 9 months to conceive our September baby, you can't plan it so why worry about it.

Ruibies · 21/01/2022 13:50

I wanted to avoid July/August, but due to medical issues I had to put off TTC for over a year, and then when finally cleared to do so I only had about 3 or 4 cycles before I would be hitting July/August conception months. At that point, I didn't want to take any months off as I was just desperate to have a baby, but we caught on cycle 2 and DC1 is due in May.

I am an early September baby and always found school easy compared to my August brother, so that's influenced my thinking too.

If we go for number 2, I'd like to be able to start trying earlier than July, so we have a few more cycles before we'd hit a July/August baby to see if it works. If it doesn't, I guess we'd make a call then as to whether to pause for a couple of months.

RevolvingPivot · 21/01/2022 13:00

My august baby is now 11. She started secondary school in September. Most of her friends in her year are already 12!!

MeatyRvita · 21/01/2022 12:58

The only month I wanted to avoid was august - didn’t want to have the youngest in the year through preference as they seem so little when they start reception!
Although after trying for 3 years with zero success we didn’t actively stop trying or either actively try that month but I’m now pregnant with a baby due in august and couldn’t be happier to just be pregnant. I really don’t care! Lol
but if I knew I was the type of person who would fall pregnant very easily I would just avoid July/august and around Christmas.

RevolvingPivot · 21/01/2022 12:55

Aimed for summer babies.

Didn't give it a second thought about school!!

I had a May and August baby. Wish I hadn't 😬

SpringRainbow · 21/01/2022 12:49

I didn’t really want a December baby, Christmas is stressful enough without worrying about a birthday as well.

Phrenologistsfinger · 21/01/2022 12:47

I have had a BFP in almost every month of the year now. None of the pregnancies survived so I would just be grateful for a living child tbh!

PattyPan · 21/01/2022 12:33

DP's birthday is in July, he didn't like it when he was younger as it was in the school holidays and difficult to arrange a birthday party as people were away, no opportunity to give invitations at school. I suppose easier now with the advent of WhatsApp though.

Glitterygreen · 21/01/2022 12:19

I think summer born is great! Apart from being young when you start school, which will hopefully be only a short term issue for the first year or so, it's fab.

Nice weather to be on maternity with a newborn, nice weather for the child's birthday, halfway through the year so easier to afford and choose gifts as not on top of Christmas, and just a generally great birthday to have for the rest of your life as you can do nicer things like bbqs etc.

My thoughts would be it's only a few short years where it's not ideal, but once you hit 13+ it's ace.

RavenclawsRoar · 20/01/2022 20:04

Dc1 is a summer baby and dc2 is autumn. I preferred having a baby in the summer (those sleepless nights really don't feel so bad with the lighter evenings) so we tried for that with dc3 and originally were due in spring but then I miscarried. Decided I didn't care after that so dc3's birthday is now around the exact same time as dc2! If I were to go for a fourth (absolutely not happening but this is hypothetical), I'd go for a spring / summer baby again for sure.

redandwhite1 · 20/01/2022 18:56

My son is July which although he's one of the younger ones he was totally ready for school and is not behind in the slightest (he's 7) so we've got lucky there

Second one is due next month so very different months so will be interesting to see the difference

Summer baby was hard work in the Heat being pregnant but god maternity coats are expensive 😂
