TTC with Adenomyosis

Hi, I'm very new to all of these forums and Mumsnet in general!

We've been TTC for 8 months and recently paid for private fertility tests for peace of mind. Everything looks good, no real cause for concern, but the one thing they diagnosed me with is Adenomyosis.

I've never heard of this before, as I don't suffer any symptoms. I don't have painful periods, just the usual cramps like any of us get, no bleeding/spotting outside of my period, I have regular periods, they're not extremely heavy etc. The only symptom I do notice from time to time is that I get mild cramping occasionally (or pinching which may be a better description) throughout my cycle - not just during the two-week-wait or during my period.

All the doctor said was: it's associated with painful periods and if you don't experience that, then I'm sure you're fine. I've not found that very reassuring due to lack of information given to me and Google searches pretty much make out your best shot is IVF when you have adenomyosis, and even then it can be difficult - but there's no clarity of whether there are different levels/extremes of this condition - it's so overwhelming!

I'd love to hear from others who are either TTC or have successfully conceived and also have adenomyosis of any severity. How long did it take you to conceive? And were there any specific supplements you were advised to take, diets to follow etc. to help with implantation? Smile

Hi ladies,

I can see you both managed to get pregnant with adenomyosis. Congrats!

Just a quick background about me. I have a 3 year old and then got pregnant again when he was 15 months old with our second but her lost her at 18 weeks. So no issues getting pregnant naturally.

we have been TTC since and no luck. Had various tests, a hyterscopy etc and been on the waiting list for a lap. Since July 2021 so 5 months after the miscarriage I started getting brown spotting for a whole week before every single period.

Now I’ve started IVF and it’s been picked up twice of adenomyosis. I’ve had egg collection and 1 fresh transfer which I believe has failed.

I don’t know if to go for the lap next month as I’ve finally got to the top of the waiting list or whether to ask for a down regulation for a frozen embryo transfer.

I just feel devastated and I saw the area really clear on the scan and it was very close to my lining and looked like focal adenomyosis although I don’t really know much about it apart from it can affect IVF outcomes.

I can’t stay off google :( I have a phone call with my Dr next week at my fertility clinic but I just feel so lost.

And yes, that's really reassuring that even the professionals dont really know about its, so hopefully its not a big deal.

I've actually just found out I'm pregnant again. Absolutely terrified, but hoping the outcome is different this time xx

I actually have very positive news - I'm 10 weeks pregnant!

I had brown spotting in the very early weeks which was worrying me as this is my first pregnancy so no idea what was normal or not. I had a scan at 7 weeks for reassurance but also because I'm a fraternal twin and my younger siblings are too, so there was a risk I'd be carrying multiples. Everything was good at that scan: measuring as expected, saw the heart beating and even saw the part of my uterus where the embryo would've implanted and they said that's why I'd have had the spotting. We have our 12 week scan on 6th July so I have everything crossed things are still fine then.

My last post showed a very faint bfp, but turns out they were faulty thanks to Sainsbury's own-branded tests being notorious for that (wish I'd known before buying them).

I ended up having a HyCoSy at the very end of April as it was the last test I needed to check everything was okay and that the mild adenomyosis diagnosis was the only thing that could be potentially affecting us. Just before the test they checked my ovaries and uterus again and said my uterine lining was now showing perfectly normal at 8.2mm and my right ovary had a dominant follicle at 17mm which meant I'd ovulate 2 days later.

Whereas the last time I had a transvaginal scan when I was first diagnosed with mild adenomyosis, I was around 1 week away from ovulating as my dominant follicle was only 11mm, but my uterine lining was a lot thicker at 12.3mm and likely to get much thicker to prepare for ovulation - hence the diagnosis. So two very different scenarios. They said I still had spots of mild adenomyosis, but barely noticeable compared to my last scan which was bizarre.

I don't know if this is reassuring, as I'm the same as you where I feel like everyone was telling me the adenomyosis won't affect anything, but at my first midwife appointment last week they asked if I suffered with endometriosis and I said no but I was diagnosed with mild adenomyosis in November - they had to ask me to spell it as it wasn't even on their system as an option to select and neither the midwife or student midwife had heard of it before. I was relieved in a way where I figured, well it's obviously not that big of a deal if it's not even on the system, but at the same time I thought, well what if adenomyosis causes complications and they don't know? Definitely worth getting a few opinions I think!

Just scrolling through as I'm in a similar situation and wondered where you're up to.

I've had three early miscariages and I've had all tests which have come back normal. I also paid privately for a scan to check everything was ok and I was told (and shown) this is what happens as we get older (I'm 36) and that I had 'mild adenomyosis, with no other symptoms so doesnt warrant further investigation'.

I'm worried the Adeno is causing my MC's. So I'm wondering if you had any updates and how you're getting on xx

It’s been a while, but I wanted to come back and update you all/get your thoughts. We’ve had our first fertility consultation and should have our follow-up in the next 1-2 weeks. I had to have my blood tests repeated as my GP booked them all on the wrong days of my cycle (typical), so that’s what my follow-up is for - to discuss the results as they were 4 weeks ago.

Today I’m 13dpo with AF due today. I’ve had cramping for a solid week which is unlike me before AF - I normally get it just on the day.

I took a cheap early test yesterday afternoon with my 4th wee of the day. Then got the top result within a minute.

This morning I did another early test with FMU and got the bottom result. The lines are there for both tests, but are very different also. I’m going to test again this afternoon as I’ve heard FMU isn’t always the best for everyone, but what do you think?

@KayC19 I’m sorry. It’s a horrible feeling when you want something so much and get thwarted every month. At least you can look forward to a nice mulled wine over Christmas and enjoy trying again for 2022. May it bring the good news we all are hoping for!

Sadly, AF arrived today 😔 been an emotional wreck all morning - each day she arrived I wouldn’t normally get emotional, but the last 2 cycles I have as it’s just hitting me harder each month now. Trying to remain positive and I’m still thankful I don’t have painful symptoms or anything like that, just feels like it’ll never happen!

Fingers crossed we hear a bfp from someone else!! 🤞🤞🤞

Thanks @hopeful777 and so sorry you suffer with this! I feel very fortunate that I have very minimal symptoms.

My temp has been on the downtrend for the last 4 days and today hit my coverline, so I think AF is on her way 😔 I’ve been trying since March this year, so after this cycle I’m definitely calling my doctors for further tests and want my tubes checking, these cysts checking, and I also want a blood test to show vitamin levels as I worry I’m not taking enough of something too.

I hope you get your bfp soon 🤞

Hi! I had an ultrasound scan earlier this year for heavy periods (worse than normal after my Covid vaccine) and the sonographer mentioned the posterior uttering wall was thicker than she expected suggesting adenonyosis. I spoke to a gynaecologist about this and she did an internal exam and a speculum - she said the womb ‘felt fuller’ and it was mildly tender. I’ve always had heavy, painful periods and thought this was the norm! She said mainstay of treatment was contraceptives to regulate hormones but as I am trying to conceive, I should just get on with it and refer myself for fertility tests early should I be unsuccessful (been trying since July for first baby).

This won’t be of much help but I just wanted to say unless you do a hysteroscopy and have a tissue sample, it’s difficult to diagnose. It’s a condition where cells from the womb grow into the muscles and has a higher risk of miscarriage but lots of women will have it and have a normal pregnancy too. So try not to let the scan results worry you, keep trying and I hope you get your BFP soon! 🤞🏾

I finally got my results! So confirmed it was “mild adenomyosis” they found, but one thing they didn’t tell me in the call that’s on the written report is that I also have some tiny cysts in my uterus. As they haven’t put any emphasis on it or advised treatment, I hope that means they’re nothing to worry about. But if AF does arrive this weekend (I’m 10dpo today and usually have a 12 day luteal phase) then I’m calling doctors next week to share the report with them.

They’ve advised to keep trying a couple more month and if no luck, have an endocrine assessment (ever heard of it before) and a HyCoSy test to check my tubes.

Thank you, that’s really kind. I’ve just called the clinic as I’m impatient and the doctor has gone home so can’t chase until 10am tomorrow 🙄 so hopefully tomorrow I get them and then I’ll call my normal doctor to share the notes with and take from there

So they found a cyst while doing the scan that suggests that I have adenomyosis. I have been fighting for four years to get it looked at. The gynaecology back home where helpful but since I moved to come back down to uni they have been useless and have just left me in an awful lot of pain.
The pregnancy thing is completely out of the blue. I had to stop taking the pill as it made me unwell. So me and my partner decided to go careful and keep on eye on things. Due to never having consistent AFs because of my issues I never know what it going on.
I hope you get answers you need soon and here to chat if you need anybody
