Pregnancy success stories after 2 miscarriages

Hi

I have had 2 miscarriages this year trying to conceive my first child. I'm 32 and have no known illnesses or anything which may impact my fertility.

I had a miscarriage at 5 and half weeks which was probably more like a chemical and got pregnant straight after again. Unfortunately, I then had a mmc at 9 weeks and baby was only measuring 6 weeks (we saw the heartbeat at the first scan).

I had surgical management with the second one on early June and found out yesterday that my hcg is now now to 48 so hopefully my cycles are almost at a point of being reset.

Just wanting to hear some positive stories from people who have had 2 or more miscarriages and had a successful pregnancy just to keep my moral up until my cycle is back. Currently I feel like a failure and that something is wrong with me. I feel like I will never be able to have a child. Some days I'm more positive but I think hearing from other may help.

Thanks in advance ❤️

I had 6 miscarriages then have had two babies to term who are now at school! What made a difference was progesterone and low dose aspirin. I decided due to NHS waits to go private but had very limited funds. So my consultants suggest instead of tests just to try these as a first try regiment. It worked on the first attempt.

TheBirdintheCave · 14/01/2023 13:09

@MattieandmummyandIs I'm doing most of that already I think :( Except the low carbs, my life is miserable enough at the moment without cutting out carbs 😂

TheBirdintheCave · 14/01/2023 13:07

@Littlegoth Thank you. At the moment I can't even imagine getting pregnant again as it took so long last time. I'll be interested to see if my blood tests show anything up.

MattieandmummyandIs · 13/01/2023 15:31

@TheBirdintheCave I saw a nutritionist, she recommended a low carb diet, decaf, no alcohol and a load of supplements. Happy to pass on her details if you like x

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 14:43

@TheBirdintheCave I’ve definitely been at the point where I thought it wasn’t going to happen! I had three miscarriages 2018-19. The first I found out at 14 weeks, but it hadn’t developed past 4 weeks. The second was a blighted ovum. The third was always measuring behind, although we saw a heartbeat at 7 weeks I miscarried at 9 weeks.

APS causes tiny clots in the placenta which interfere with implantation. The egg doesn’t implant securely and so doesn’t develop, or develops slowly, but ultimately results in pregnancy loss. Each of my losses was different but still likely due to untreated APS.

My next pregnancy was right after diagnosis and went well with medication, so it was quite a shock to miscarry again in August - I thought with a diagnosis and treatment I had little to worry about. Another blighted ovum so progesterone was added. I’m over 40 so worth trying. This one is fine so far but I’m on aspirin, enoxaparin and progesterone.

I had food poisoning around when my 4th stopped developing but the clinic told me it was very unlikely to have caused my miscarriage. Got my fingers crossed that your next pregnancy goes smoothly x

TheBirdintheCave · 13/01/2023 13:20

@Littlegoth I guess I'm screwed then 😂 We already have a toddler born in 2020 so it was a big surprise for us to have two miscarriages in a row. They were different though, if that counts for anything. The first was a blighted ovum and the second we had a heartbeat at six weeks but then the baby died around 8 weeks. I was also ill around 3-4 weeks both times first with food poisoning and secondly with hand, foot and mouth virus.

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 12:25

@TheBirdintheCave sorry bird - got my stats a bit ahead. I’ll correct here. If you take every woman, 1% will have 3 or more miscarriages.

The more miscarriages you have, the more likely you are to have more - one miscarriage points to a chromosome or genetic issue, lightning striking. 2 or more is more shows a pattern and is likely to be underlying medical cause that needs treatment. After 1 your risk is similar to women who have had none, about 20%. After 2 it’s 25-30%. 3 or more it’s about 40%. This is looking at all women, but depending on the underlying cause you’ve got issues like mine that give me an 80% chance of miscarriage (although treated now I’ve got a 75% chance of success even though I’ve had several miscarriages).

That’s just the ones that are recorded too. Tommy’s are working so hard to change it but there’s still very little research into miscarriage.

I got the figures from my recurrent miscarriage clinics

TheBirdintheCave · 13/01/2023 10:14

@Littlegoth It's ok, it's been revived and is currently active. I must admit I didn't even notice that it was an old thread 😂

Interesting about your statistics. I do agree with you that there is always a medical cause and I'm currently having the thyroid and clotting tests done by a private fertility clinic.

However, I did the Tommy's miscarriage calculator thing and it put my chance of a successful pregnancy next time at 79% (which is basically normal).

Where did you get the 40% chance of another miscarriage from? Everywhere I look it says that the chance of three in a row is 1%.

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 09:16

Missed the zombie thread!

NRTFT (and maybe there’s an update in it!) but hope OP got a happy ending and for anyone still in this awful cycle my advice above remains the same x

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 09:14

I’m so sorry for your losses.

I had 4 miscarriages. After the first 3 I was referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic (although some are accepting patients after 2 so ask your GP for a referral now). They found I had a blood clotting condition, and without medication my chances of a successful pregnancy are less than 1 in 5. I was prescribed aspirin and enoxaparin in my next pregnancy and he arrived exactly a year after my first clinic appointment. I had another miscarriage in August, and progesterone was added for my next pregnancy. I’m now 12 weeks.

It’s important to understand that there is ALWAYS a medical reason for miscarriage. It’s not bad luck. It’s not chance. It’s not just one of those things. Sometimes it’s a problem with the egg, or chromosomes. Sometimes it’s a medical condition like thyroid, blood clotting, even vitamin deficiency, or something else that can be treated with medication to increase your chances of a successful pregnancy next time.

I hope you don’t think I’m being unkind here as it’s not my aim. After my second miscarriage the doctors were still saying - the odds of you having a successful pregnancy next time are good. What they should have been saying, rather than giving false hope and kind but unhelpful encouragement to keep trying, was that after 2 miscarriages the chances of a 3rd in a row is about 40%. This is why most countries outside the U.K. offer testing after 2. The U.K. doesn’t because it’s expensive and there are waiting lists. If your GP won’t refer you for investigation yet, and you can afford it, I recommend that as a minimum you look at private blood testing for clotting and thyroid to rule out any issues. I think it was about £300 at my local hospital but I’ve seen it lower shopping around.

Wishing you all the luck in your next pregnancy xxx

chasingtherainbow1 · 13/01/2023 09:08

@TheBirdintheCave thank you. I literally threw everything at it:

  • all the vitamins from It Starts With an Egg
  • doxycycline for endometritis even though we didn't have to test to see if I had it
  • went gluten free and limited carbs
  • took myo inositol for very mild pcos
-progesterone from 3dpo

Not sure what it was but something in there worked. I'm 33 so I think my egg quality was declining a bit and I think the vits helped

TheBirdintheCave · 13/01/2023 08:56

@chasingtherainbow1 Congrats on your sticky bean :D Did you do anything differently when you got pregnant this time round?

I unfortunately have to try regardless of whether I'm ready or not as I'm quite old now and it takes us forever to get pregnant :(

chasingtherainbow1 · 13/01/2023 08:43

@LAURAPAX @TheBirdintheCave I'm sorry to hear both your stories! It's such an awful time and I hope your surgeries went well.

Just wanted to say that I know the feeling all too well of feeling like you will never have a baby. It's the worst feeling in the world. Although I'm currently 28 weeks after 3 early losses, i still feel like I'm waiting for it to go wrong somewhere down the line. However, this is closer than I've ever got before and has made me realise that every pregnancy is different and I believe that I will have a child one day. The hardest part is picking yourself up and trying again. Just don't ever give up. Take your time to heal mentally and physically and when you're ready, try again. Sending love ❤️

TheBirdintheCave · 12/01/2023 22:15

@LAURAPAX I'm so sorry that happened :( Hopefully your recovery is much smoother now. I know what you mean about the emotions. Physically I've recovered well but emotionally I'm up and down like a yoyo.

Just take it one day at a time and try and go with however you feel. I've been doing small things that make me feel better, like planning a holiday or making nice lunches but if all I felt like doing was lying on the sofa and being sad then I let myself do that too.

LAURAPAX · 12/01/2023 21:59

Hope you are recovering well @TheBirdintheCave sorry I haven’t been in touch I ended up staying in hospital until late as I had quite a lot of bleeding in surgery and low blood pressure until about 9pm even though I went down at 8.30am. Physically I’ve been recovering ok but this evening having sharp pains so hoping that calms down soon. Emotionally I am a mess. I just don’t know how I am going to move forward again. I keep having nightmares that I am never going to have a successful live birth 💔 hopefully just need some more time to come to terms with everything. Take care x

TheBirdintheCave · 07/01/2023 13:57

@LAURAPAX I hope everything goes well on Monday :)

LAURAPAX · 07/01/2023 13:23

@TheBirdintheCave so pleased to hear all went well yesterday and glad you are recovering well. I’m back at the EPU having my bloods done ahead of Monday.

@MattieandmummyandIs thank you for sharing your journey I am so pleased everything worked out for you despite going through awful miscarriages. It really is the worst. I really hope it will be third time lucky for me when we can try again. Not sure how / if I could cope with another lose and no baby 😢 x

MattieandmummyandIs · 06/01/2023 20:30

@LAURAPAX sadly yes, once before my first daughter and twice before my second daughter. It's tough, I had aspirin and progesterone from ovulation until 16 weeks for the second pregnancy - I don't know if I needed it or if it helped. I do also have adenomyosis so all those pregnancies were even less likely.

TheBirdintheCave · 06/01/2023 16:52

@LAURAPAX All went well. I was extremely impressed with the hospital. The staff were so kind and efficient, it was spotlessly clean and the operation was very quick. I'm now at home with no pain, only light bleeding and some slight dizziness.

Looking forward to getting back to trying again.

LAURAPAX · 06/01/2023 16:33

Hope all went well today @TheBirdintheCave 💕
thats really good to hear @MattieandmummyandIs i need as much positivity as I can get. Did you also experience miscarriage? Xx

MattieandmummyandIs · 06/01/2023 10:04

Just wanted to say don't give up hope, I also felt like I had left it too late and I am sitting here with two children. I was 36 when I conceived my first child. Best of luck x

TheBirdintheCave · 05/01/2023 21:08

@LAURAPAX The important thing is that you're being proactive now :) We can't change the past, we can only work with what we have in front of us.

We were meant to have our initial tests in early November but both caught Covid for the first time so had to move the appointment to early December. Then I found out I was pregnant so we cancelled the whole thing.

Our fertility MOT thing is on the 30th of Jan and the consultation is on the 2nd of Feb.

LAURAPAX · 05/01/2023 20:30

@TheBirdintheCave will be thinking of you tomorrow - I hope the surgery goes well and at least we will both be able to think about moving forward once this is done.

Ah that’s a small world you are also with Kings - were you about the start IVF when you fell pregnant or going to have initial consultation? When is your rebooked appointment? When I re contacted them last week they said we needed a follow up phone consultation first which is what we have booked for next Thursday. We had the MOT fertility testing in Oct after the first MC so yes I imagine it will be more in depth blood testing first off but to be honest im so scared now about my age and my egg quality im keen to just get going ASAP / catch my eggs as soon as possible before they get any worse : ( im turning 37 in May and so stressed out, especially as we don’t have any living children. I honestly just didn’t factor this in and so many people I know at my age fall pregnant no issues. I’m so upset and angry at myself that we didn’t start trying sooner. It’s going to haunt me forever 💔

TheBirdintheCave · 05/01/2023 17:51

@LAURAPAX My surgery is tomorrow (a week after we found out), fingers crossed it goes ok and that yours does too.

Funnily enough our IVF appointments are also with Kings! We rebooked them yesterday (cancelled when we found out we were pregnant in November) for the end of January.

I've read about so many different things that could cause multiple miscarriages that it's making my head spin. I think blood tests to rule out anything obvious (thyroid, clotting conditions etc) will be our first steps.

How about you?

LAURAPAX · 05/01/2023 16:32

Hi @TheBirdintheCave sorry to hear about your losses too. It is absolutely devastating. I am having to wait two weeks for the surgical management as they are so busy it is on Monday and I was kind of hoping I might miscarry naturally before then but nothing over the last few weeks which I’ve found so hard. I had a follow up scan with the EPU today hoping they would have made a mistake as still not bled etc but sadly not. At least I feel like I have closure now and need to stay strong / sit tight until Monday. I just pray the surgery goes well and no complications. I am also looking at IVF with testing - I have a follow up appointment with Kings next week to discuss additional testing, but I genuinely believe my issue is age / egg related. I am fit healthy / doing all the right things but believe consecutive miscarriages with no live births at my age is egg related, which is a really hard thing to take to be honest.

what are your next steps? Have you decided what fertility clinic you are going to? Did you have surgical management? Hope you are keeping as well as you can be xx
