Feeling a bit down in the dumps after AF turned up at the end of cycle 4. I know it's not a long time to try for, I know. Apparently up to a year is perfectly normal. But it's just so hard getting your hopes up to then get a big AF-shaped slap in the face.

How long did it take you to get your BFP when trying for your first baby?

Dd 1 - total surprise was taking the pill and found out at 3 months gone by fluke, dd was heartbreakingly stillborn.

Dd 2 - 3rd cycle of trying, text book pregnancy.

Now trying ttc again with a different partner and in tww of cycle 8 or 9, I've forgotten which and kind of given up! I would love it to happen, but I can't do anymore then I am and I've mentally let it go. What will be will be. I guess because of my first experience of pregnancy and dd stillbirth, I recognise the complete lack of control I really have over any part of the process.

firstimemamma · 22/05/2021 21:20

@pizzaobsessed oh god! My ds has been asking for a sibling regularly since October last year bless him. He's not even 3 yet so totally clueless about the process - the other day he told me to get a baby in my tummy by "going out there and finding one!" wedding day early June then bye bye pill! I hope you get your bfp soon op.

Four months at 40. Second four months at 42. Didn't do anything other than had sex a few times a week.

BabyFartsDoStink · 22/05/2021 21:06

6 years with not so much as a false positive
1 husband, then someone else
1 round IVF

1 perfect 6m DS

JellyTumble · 22/05/2021 20:40

Three weeks. We were lucky.

pizzaobsessed · 22/05/2021 20:38

@beckyCarlos @firstimemamma tissues at the ready girls! I've actually just watched a YouTube video that suggested doing the upside down bike to help spermies on their way 😂

@beckyCarlos hahaha! We are planning on trying for our second starting from next month and all the weird dilemmas have come flooding back to me!

pizzaobsessed · 22/05/2021 20:36

@Chanel05 that's a very good point, thank you
@beckyCarlos I know, the cup thing is so weird! I just bloody lay flat for a bit afterwards!
Im always torn between moving and staying still and hoping for the best...noone likes a wet patch 🤣

Aniseeeds · 22/05/2021 20:04
@Asthenia I'm hoping I'm going to be in the same boat as you then! I agree, you tend to hear stories of those who got pregnant in 2 weeks and those who took years with very few being in the middle. It's so weird going from seeing my period as a good thing each month to never wanting to see it again!
The one thing I learnt when ttc (and actually after as friends have fallen pregnant!) is that people love to tell you when it was a one hit wonder, one cycle only, couldn't believe how quick it was, all whilst gushing. You'll see from the replies here that many months on the later side of coming up to a year and several years is extremely common. Of course, people don't brag about this or like to talk about it because it can be hugely painful.

Mimsytove · 22/05/2021 19:31

1st : two months.
2nd: 7 years.

LondonladyTTC · 22/05/2021 19:24

Hi @Juno231 , sorry, just seen this. I have kicked off investigations privately. I had a short luteal phase which is now being treated with ovitrelle and progesterone. DH has also found out that he has low sperm concentration and morphology so think it has been a combination of both of these things. We have decided to try for another three cycles before we start talking about ivf or anything. What about you?

beckyCarlos · 22/05/2021 18:46

@firsttimemama @pizzaobsessed omg the cup 🤣 I'll stick to putting my feet up against the wall x

TheMotherlode · 22/05/2021 18:36

DC1 - first attempt!
DC2 - 9 months

I get his frustrating it is OP, even though you know that up to a year is normal, it’s still massively frustrating every time AF arrives. Hang in there, try not to stress about it too much, hope you get your BFP soon!

pheasantsinlove · 22/05/2021 18:19

9 years... then we gave up and got a dog! GrinGrin
Just because 4 months isn't long op doesn't minimise the disappointment each month. I hope it happens for you soon. My only advice is don't put you life on hold because you're constantly thinking that you can't plan that far ahead in case you get pregnant.... that's my only regret. I let my career and travel plans stall because of 'just in case.'

Carry on doing everything you want to do. Allow yourself to be sad but don't wallow.

@firstimemamma thank you for sharing, that was really useful. Not sure I fancy the cup idea though! Confused

@Asthenia really helpful to read your story. Thank you. I’m in month 9 now of TTC. I do have a child but it doesn’t make it less worrying each month that I don’t get pregnant

Asthenia · 22/05/2021 17:00

9 months aged 30. Currently 9 weeks pregnant. 9 months isn’t long in the scheme of things but I think even 3 months even feels like a long time when it’s something you want so much and have no control over!
I think the thing I found hardest is I never seemed to see any ‘in between’ stories. As a PP said, I felt like I either read about people who took a month to conceive or people who took years and needed treatment. I wish it wasn’t such a stressful thing, I feel for everyone trying as I was in such a rubbish headspace a few months ago.

choccrumpet · 22/05/2021 15:56

Yep @beckyCarlos I've also been enjoying my acupuncture sessions! For lots of different reasons I feel a lot "lighter" about this cycle, feel like a weight has been lifted off me and acupuncture is definitely contributing to that. Would also recommend as something to try for anyone looking for something to help them mentally and potentially physically as well

beckyCarlos · 22/05/2021 15:44
@beckyCarlos humour definitely helps! I've considered acupuncture - how have you found it helps you?
I've only been for one session so the jury is out, but my video call beforehand was lovely, with advice about diet and generally talking about me, my cycle, and emotional state. I felt like a person rather than a number (/nuisance) like with the gp/nurse.

For the session itself, I was sceptical but open, and its really hard to describe but I felt this overwhelming sense of peace and like everything was going to be ok. No idea how 7 needles and a heat lamp did that but I figure it cant hurt 🤣 the chill positive feeling has lasted two days so far, and next appointment is a week on Tues which should be just before ovulation.

Hopefully now the UK is starting to 'get back to 'normal'' a bit we'll all have a bit more to distract and relax us x
