Does anyone know how long you should wait to try again after a miscarriage? I recently suffered a miscarriage- early at 6 weeks. Really want another baby but feel a bit scared now as fell so easily with dd.

sambrads · 16/11/2007 09:04

withchandchips my friend was told she would never have kids even ivf would never work and guess what did get pregnant!
unfortunatly she had a mc but now she knows she has hope .

wishing yes it is frustrating (and the rest). Am just coming to terms with the idea that at best i only have a 1 in 2 chance of getting pregnant. Debating IVF/IUI at the mo. one of my issues is that the more we go down the intervention route the harder it will be to accept that we are not going to get another one.

wishing1 · 15/11/2007 00:12

witchandchips!!
I am 39 and ttc for 17 months now, it's frustrating isn't it? DH has low count but not extremely and I'm fine, don't know...guess it will just take more time, co worker had same prob and 3 years they tried and finally it just happened. I just keep praying and I've already had a couple children that are grown...dh doesn't want to go for any help right now, thinks I'm freaking out about being infertile...men...he's a huge procrastinator. good luck!!

Kewcumber · 14/11/2007 21:20

have you tried ovulation tester kits? I know they;re expensive but if you do them for a couple of months - it will predict when the right time to have sex is and if you're not ovulating then it gives you something concrete to go to your GP with.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 20:22

ok thanks again or all your advise .
i am currently on medication for my thyroid and as far as my gp is concerned everything is ok with it now.
hopefully it will happen soon enough.
i am having sex when im ment to and loads more but i think i have problems ovulating

Sambrands - the reason that you can't get a referral before at least 2 years as there is generally nothing wrong prior to that (given age and proven fertility with DC1) - it would be wasting resource on people with nothing wrong with them! Getting a consultation with a fertility specialist wouldn't help you get pregnant becasue they would just tell you to go away and have sex during your fertile period and come back in 2 years if not pregnant by then...

Agree you should get yout thyroid treated properly though.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 14:55

Sambrads I am very sorry for your loss.

I do fear however that your fil has unwittingly put a lot of pressure on you because it is his dying wish for you to have another child. If you want to have more children, then it should be because you want to have more children, not because it was the dying wish of someone else.

It is commonly known that stress can cause problems in conceiving, it can delay ovulation and consequently delay periods, so if you are feeling under pressure to fulfil the dying wish of your fil it is entirely possible that this is preventing you from actually conceiving.

I would forget about the wishes of others, put them out of your mind completely, relax and let nature take its course. Whenever you conceive another baby you will have fulfilled your fil?s dying wish, be it today or in 10 years time.

I also wouldn?t be so quick to run to a private clinic just because you have been trying for 6 months. Six months really is no time at all, and it is entirely possible you will conceive in the next six months. Someone used to post a statistic on here about what percentage of people conceive in what time, and it is astounding how many still have not conceived within 12 months. Honestly, although it is very frustrating it is also very normal to take up to 12 months to conceive.

I would however get your thyroid dealt with asap, as this is something that can prevent conception. So if you ar not on any medication already then I would see your gp to see what can be done about it. I would also make sure you speak to him re ttc while on high doses of thyroid medication as it is entirely possible you will be advised to stop ttc until your thyroid levels are normal.

Kewcumber · 14/11/2007 13:51

you maximise your chances by having sex around the time you ovulate. If you don't know when that is I suggest you search the internet and do some reading pretty fast!

If you have a regular cycle most women ovulate 14 days before their period is due - if you are regular you can work backwards to get a rough idea, if you arent; regular try iovulation predictor kits from Boots if you can afford it.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 13:44

WITCHANDCHIPS DONT BE IN DENIAL ITS OK FROM PEOPLE I HAVE SPOKE TO ITS NOT EASY GETTING PREGNANT EVEN IF YOUR 100% OK

witchandchips · 14/11/2007 13:10

I'm 39 and have been ttc for dc2 for just under 2 years. Just begun to seek help as I think we were a bit in denial about it

dooley1 · 14/11/2007 13:05

I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL
I think at your age your gp might want to investigate a bit more as 6 months does sound long for someone of 22
It took me 4 months to conceive no 2 and every time my period came I felt terrible
I know it's not a lng time for lots of people but when you want something so badly all the waiting and hoping takes it's toll no matter how short a time you've been trying for
Good luck

worzsel · 14/11/2007 12:58

if you can afford 'not to waste' 2 years trying then go private.

mummypig · 14/11/2007 12:36

here's a quote from a site I found (www.ivf.com/ch12mbpg2.html)

Hypothyroidism
When your thyroid hormone production drops below normal, an intriguing chemical process leads to excess prolactin. Your hypothalamus also controls thyroid hormone levels by producing TRH (thyroid-releasing hormone) which tells your pituitary to make TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). When your thyroid gland cannot respond to these chemical signals, your hypothalamus senses that there isn't enough thyroid hormone around, so it produces more TRH, saying, "Get to work. We need more thyroid hormone."

Due to a unique chemical association, TRH also tells your pituitary to release more prolactin. The excess prolactin not only interferes with pituitary function but also exerts a direct inhibitory effect on the ovary itself. Taking a thyroid supplement to quiet your hypothalamus will usually correct this chemical imbalance and restore ovulation.

hope that helps

mummypig · 14/11/2007 12:32

hi sambrads I think your doctor was dismissing the thyroid probs out of hand. They can affect ovulation, and therefore affect your chances of getting pg. I know my neighbour had an underactive thyroid while trying to get pg with number two and they found out her periods were 'anovulatory' i.e. she was bleeding but hadn't actually ovulated. This might explain why your periods are 'all over the place'. Try doing a google search on 'anovulatory' and 'thyroid' or something like that - and maybe find another doctor who's less dismissive of your questions.

I'm not sure what treatment my neighbour had but she did manage to conceive dc2 in the end - and she was only just under 40. So don't give up hope. I'm sure you will get your second child in the end.

sambrads · 14/11/2007 12:22

i no you might think i am being un reasonable and letting things annoy me but i have my reasons . i was not going to put this in cause i dont want sympathy but my father in law just past away after a brave battle with cancer and his dying wish was to have another baby so my son is not an only child like my husband so maybe you now realise why i am so determined!!

OP posts:
wannaBe · 14/11/2007 11:19

I know how frustrating it can be but you seriously need to relax.

It can take a normally, healthy fertile couple up to a year to conceive, and your gp would not consider sending you for any tests until you have been ttc for at least a year, and even any reputable private clinic would send you away to try for longer if you've not been ttc for at least a year. Six months is not "having problems conceiving".

If you're only 22 you really do have time on your side. Relax, enjoy your baby, and when it is meant to happen it will happen.
