Anyone else TTC over the age of 40? I have a 19 month who was conceived first attempt. TTC #2 since June without success so far. Be good to hear from anyone in the same boat! I’m still bfeeding so wondering if that might be a factor. Plus my age obvs!

@birdbybird It's good to speak to others who are having similar experiences. Are you planning to completely wean?

@Mattieandmummy that's a great mindset to have, I do try and stay positive but as the months go by I sometimes find it hard. I am also trying to remind myself every day that I am blessed with my DS and what will be will be x

Sorry to hear that @birdbybird, it's so tough isn't it....

When my little girl was in intensive care, I remember a really kind nurse said to me that if you have positive thoughts then positive things will happen because you are more open to seeing the possibilities of things. It doesn't make it all ok but some days I find it helps x

birdbybird · 27/05/2021 20:01

Hi @Jem1979 and @Mattieandmummy I’m in a similar boat. I’ve been TTC since December when my son was 12 months and I had a chemical in cycle 1 and a mc in cycle 2, didn’t try properly again until cycle 5 and it was a bfn. We’re down to 1 morning feed and 1 late afternoon feed. Little boy is 17.5 months now.

Mattieandmummy · 27/05/2021 19:41

She's two and a half.... She still asks me if my boobs work at bedtime. 😔

If it helps, I started with not feeding to sleep at naps but it sounds like you're already part of the way there if you little boy is able to go to sleep at nursery by himself.

So funny this whole weaning thing - a really good friend of mine has a little girl the same age as mine and her little girl decided at 18 months that she was done with breastfeeding. Just pushed the boob away one day and that was that, my friend was devastated.

Jem1979 · 27/05/2021 19:32

@Mattieandmummy I've seen that article, it's really informative. Ha same here during the night. Easy option 🤪 What age is your wee one? I def have mixed emotions about stopping but do feel it's time!

OP posts:
Mattieandmummy · 27/05/2021 18:36

Hmm that should have said I've been shoving a boob in her face at the slightest sound overnight until the beginning of March this year.

Not sure what happened there 🤷

I found this article really interesting re: breastfeeding and fertility:

www.carolsmyth.co.uk/breastfeeding-resources/posts/2017/june/breastfeeding-fertility-and-subfertility-3/

Mattieandmummy · 27/05/2021 16:39

Oh yes this sounds so familiar, we gave up with a cot at 4.5 months and I've basically just shoved a boob in her face at the slightest sound 😂 since giving up at the beginning of March this year. I do miss the connection though.

Jem1979 · 27/05/2021 10:57

@Mattieandmummy Yes that is really helpful, thanks so much for the info and advice. I just need to bite the bullet but keep putting it off....esp as got a BFP so thought it was ok to continue feeding for a while longer. But really keen to conceive again asap given my age so now feeling determined about it! He goes mad at night if my hubby goes in to settle him or if I try without feeding him, and like you said it makes me question whether doing the right thing and so end up offering it. I just need to try and persevere for a few nights at least. Everyone I know who has stopped feeding has said sleep has improved so it seems like a no brainer!! But like most things with small children, it sounds easy in theory but much less so in practice! This is the side of bfeeding no-one tells you about! x

@Jem1979 I was down to one feed a day at 10.1, had stopped by the 11.9 result and then yes at 8 weeks after stopping got the 34.8 result. But I still don't think it was totally all back to normal that month as I had an early period that was 10 days long which is not normal for me. Am repeating the progesterone test again today so we shall see. Apparently it can take up 12 weeks for your body to sort itself out 🙄 but I do know people who got pregnant the month after they stopped so I think everyone is different.

I hope it's not too traumatic a process weaning, I had one night where my daughter got very upset and I did seriously question what we were doing. I also had severe panic attacks, depression, insomnia and general anxiety during weaning which apparently is totally normal. But I also know people who didn't get any of that at all so fingers crossed for you that your path will be a lot smoother than mine.

Obviously I'm just one case but my little girl does actually sleep better now we've stopped bf-ing.... I was really worried she wouldn't but she does. Only wakes once a night now and she just needs to know I'm there then straight back to sleep. But I really think it was just that she finally could do rather being connected to breastfeeding. Hope that helps x

I hope we all are successful and quickly too! Xx

Jem1979 · 27/05/2021 09:09

@Mattieandmummy Thanks that's helpful to know, did it go up to 34.8 once you had stopped feeding? I think I will give it a few months and if no luck then will try and get some tests done. And in the meantime going to try and wean my son. He is a poor sleeper too, always has been. Bfeeding is the quickest and easiest way to get him back to sleep! But am feeling ready to stop so want to really give it a try. That's great your daughter can get to sleep without it. My wee one goes to sleep at nursery so I know he can do it too!! Hopefully now your levels are good you will get your BFP! x

@gizmo167 Am not surprised how you are feeling with no appts scheduled yet, hope you get some through soon. The nausea is surely a good sign? x

Should have said I also had a terrible terrible sleeper and was feeding to sleep but she suddenly started dropping her nap and then one day got on my lap just before dinner and fell asleep by herself - actually I hadn't even noticed she'd dropped off. So we had a chat about it and agreed we'd see if she could go to sleep at bedtime with me just holding her which worked and we went from there. I think she was just ready to do it by herself.

I do still sleep with her though so it's not all roses!

Mattieandmummy · 26/05/2021 17:34

Hi @Jem1979, no my GP told me as I already had one child the NHS couldn't help me. I had my progesterone checked and did a monitored cycle at the Lister clinic. My progesterone was 10.9 then 11.1 the following month then 34.8 the third month. They said they like to see it between 30 and 40 on day 21. With levels at 10/11 they told me that although I was likely ovulating, no mature eggs were being produced and therefore no mature corpus luteum and so not enough progesterone to carry a pregnancy even if I did by miracle manage to conceive with an immature egg.

Jem1979 · 26/05/2021 16:47

@41FerrisWheels Bali sounds amazing and a totally different way of life could be just what you need. Enjoy x

@Mattieandmummy Hello yes of course more than welcome! Sorry to hear you e had a rough time. It's hard going this baby making! I'm interested in what you said about the hormones, as I'm still feeding my 2 year old. Took me 9 months to conceive again and then had a MC last month. Have always wondered if the feeding was a factor. Did you get your levels checked by your GP? I'm hoping to stop feeding but my wee one feeds to sleep and when he wakes in the night so it's not going to be easy!

gizmo167 · 26/05/2021 16:20

@41FerrisWheels wishing you and oh all the very best on your exciting move, hope all goes great for you both xx

I'm currently 9+1 & still an absolute nervous wreck, anxious as can be that something will be wrong, it'll either be a mmc or molar or something else extreme! Still really nauseous, hits worse in evenings & have been sick few times, still waiting on midwife appointment & scan date, wishing the time past!

Mattieandmummy · 26/05/2021 14:18

Hello,

can I join the thread? I am now 40 😔 and trying to TTC our second after a partial molar MC and then a super traumatic birth which luckily two years down the line had a happy outcome.

We've been trying since Jan this year and since then I've had a MC and I'm pretty sure a chemical last month. I've had to stop bfing my little girl as my hormone levels were just far too low to carry a pregnancy. They're all back to normal and this is the first month TTC after being given the all clear hormones wise but after 4 months of bad news I'm definitely finding it difficult to be positive and not stress.

41FerrisWheels · 26/05/2021 14:15

Thanks @Jem1979 I will be glad of a change of scenery, although will miss home and family a lot too..the job is in Bali, so my suitcase will be mainly getting packed with mosquito spray as the little b*ggers love me! But it will be an adventure and hopefully I will fit in and make some friends...time will tell! I won't be ttc whilst there though as they have zika virus so not worth the risk, but I have a feeling I will be back on here this time next year when hopefully all of you will be pregnant or have had a baby!!!! Good luck everyone! xxxxx

Jem1979 · 26/05/2021 12:20

@41FerrisWheels Ah that's nice news! Thanks to you too for all your messages of support, best of luck on your new adventure. I hope you are going somewhere nice and warm? xx

Hello everyone! Just wanted to wish you all the best of luck in your ttc journey's and a special thank you to @Jem1979 for starting this thread, it has been a great source of comfort, reassurance and support to me over the last few months. My DH has been offered a job overseas for a year so we're going to go for it, and after 3 years of ttc and mc's I am ready for a total break - but no doubt I will be back when I return to the UK! Never say never! Grin Best of luck to you all and thanks again for all your wise words and humour - a real tonic! xxx

Jem1979 · 25/05/2021 07:12

@Lastyearttc Yes same take CoQ10 then just folic and vitamin D. I know, the more you read, the more you think 'this might be the one that finally works' lol

OP posts:
Lastyearttc · 24/05/2021 22:54

@Jem1979 well 120 tablets of Coq10 which I need to up to twice a day so that would last me 2 months. That's £30. then EPO and pregacare... are you taking any vitamins or supplements at all? I wrote a list of about 20 others take, its a bloody mindful!!!

Jem1979 · 24/05/2021 22:03

@Lastyearttc It was just under £100 including 20 ovulation tests and 4 preg tests. So not the cheapest! £50 per cycle is a lot... what are you taking? Sorry to hear AF arrived, I recently read somewhere that instead of seeing it as a negative thing, you should think of it as the first day of AF could be the first day of your next pregnancy (when they date it back). I thought that was a good way of looking at it!

OP posts:
Lastyearttc · 24/05/2021 17:57

Well AF arrived as expected, so just spent c£50 on more supplements for this cycle!

@Jem1979 good luck bd this week. Out of interest, how much is a cb fertility monitor? Just use ics so thinking of upping the game lol

Jem1979 · 24/05/2021 08:32

@Lastyearttc hello there sorry I meant to reply sooner but was my wee boys 2nd birthday on Thursday so had a busy few days! It's hard trying to DTD to schedule some months isn't it?! I'm CD14 and got a peak today on my monitor so planning to DTD next few days. Not getting my hopes up but just pleased things seem to be back to normal fairly quickly after my loss. Hope everyone else doing ok! How are you feeling @gizmo167 has the sickness died down any? xx

OP posts:
Lastyearttc · 19/05/2021 23:04

Hi all, how's everyone doing? 8dpo here are trying not to think about it! Only dtd 3 days before ovulation this month so just want time to pass so I can try on my next cycle!

Jem1979 · 13/05/2021 08:36

@Jigglykween funny I was just thinking of you too. Frustrating it's a BFN and no AF. @41FerrisWheels you never know it isn't over for the cycle til AF shows up. Hope you have a great time away.

Speaking of AF mine has arrived, first after my MC so feeling much more positive as I climb back on this crazy TTC rollercoaster! I also bought a clearblue fertility monitor which is probably a waste of money but after the MC helped me to feel like I was being proactive. Plus I'm a sucker for a gadget! Smile
