TTC after miscarriage

lamby12 · 05/01/2021 13:39

Hi just wondered if anyone had any experience of continuing TTC after miscarriage. I had a loss at 5/6 weeks recently. The bleeding has now stopped (about 3 days clear) and I'm starting to feel back to normal physically. Emotionally I'm gutted as we have been trying for so long and a few close relatives who know have said we should wait a while to recover emotionally/physically.
Whilst I agree, I've also read that you're most fertile after a miscarriage and it's taken 18months of inconsistent ovulation/low hormones for me to get pregnant. I don't want to miss what could be an increased chance when my odds are low ordinarily.
The hospital said I should wait until a normal period for dating reasons only, they said nothing about risk of infection or complications getting pregnant straight away. I have no idea when I would ovulate (if) now.
Any experience out there?

Hi @CookieMonster3001 I have everything crossed for you, I really hope it happens for you.

I think AF is here for me. Just a little bit of pink discharge but it's the start because I have that familiar dragging feeling and I have felt crazy angry today. Mostly about the fact that is hasn't happened this month. I did FRER this morning before the pink and it was a BFN and no AF is here so I'm out.

I think I am going to come off the chat for a bit - I've been so down the last few days knowing it's over and reliving the miscarriage, obsessive about testing and googling everything I feel like it's eating me up a bit. My screen time on my phone has been through the roof and I feel really sluggish and lazy as I haven't been doing much else.

I've just been furloughed as of this week so I'm going to really try and use the next few weeks to get out of this rut, get out exercising, do lots of jobs round the house and do plenty of cooking. Otherwise I will spend my whole furlough on mumsnet and I'll feel rubbish personally if I do that!

I'm trying to train my brain that obsessing and wanting it more won't make a difference so I'm going to try and 'get on' as much as possible for the next month, that's the plan for now anyway!

I'll keep checking for any updates on here though so please keep me posted on any news. Good luck ladies Smile

5DPO here for me and nothing really to report. Temps are finally going up slightly, been a bit of a slow rise but tbh think the mc threw everything into a total meltdown. Similar symptoms to last cycle, stabby pains in boobs, creamy wet CM and cramping... but that is most likely hormones. Still got another 10 days to go before AF. My LP is usually 15 days long so its a longgg wait! TTC is literally the only time I wish days away!!

CookieMonster3001 · 19/01/2021 11:30

@lamby12 oh no hun im so sorry about your BFN. It could still be early days. When I fell pregnant, I got a BFN at 9DPO and then a BFP on 11DPO. 9DPO is usually the most common day to implant, so you never know until AF shows up!
I know how you feel though and its totally understandable how you are feeling. I think I would be the same. We pin a little hope into the fact that we might get pregnant straight after a mc, and it almost makes dealing with the mc a little easier, so I can empathise with you on mourning over your mc again. Please be easy and kind on your self, its a hard thing to go through.

Sending you lots of love.

lamby12 · 18/01/2021 15:36

Yes I sort of wanted to keep them but I knew I'd just keep looking at them and obsessing over how I feel like it's been stolen!

I ended up doing the other test this aft and still a BFN, no hint of a line. I'm so down today, I feel like I'm mourning the miscarriage all over again because I hadn't 100% accepted things with the hope that it would happen straight after. I feel like I've had concrete poured into me in terms of sluggishness and laziness which is usually a sign AF is coming for me.

I would normally be due any time now as short cycle, this time last month I'd had my BFP on this day. Sad

CookieMonster3001 · 18/01/2021 10:40

@lamby12 oh I was the opposite! I cried when I saw my negative, but I also couldn't bring myself to throw away my positive tests so I still have them in my draw. Tried to convince myself it was so when I fall pregnant again I can compare them to something, but tbh I just cant let go of them!
I know how you feel, I am counting down the days until I can test, but at the same time I want to wait till AF. I am so torn. I mean I hated the TWW before I got pregnant, but I hate it more now because I am so scared to see a negative and scared to see a positive as well!!

Im 4DPO today and no real symptoms either (I know at this stage I wouldn't even be pregnant yet but cant help but want to feel something!) I have been having mild cramping since I ovulated but that's about it. My BBT temps also seem to be a bit lower than normal too and hoping that's not gonna be an issue. I kinda feel like I have written this month off already.

When are you due on?

lamby12 · 18/01/2021 08:48

Hi hope everyone is ok, I tried to have a breather from my phone over the weekend. So I caved and did a test this morning and it's a definite BFN. I started trying to look for a faint line and get more light etc then thought god what am I doing, back here again in the bathroom looking for lines when there clearly isn't any!

I know it's still very early to test, 9dpo at earliest because I'm not 100% on Ov day, but I feel like I just know now that I'm not. Last month I had lots of symptoms at this point and I knew before I tested. This month I had some twinges similar last week but nothing the last few days - AF must be on the way.

Feels like a blow because it was like the first chance after the miscarriage and a chance to not 'go back there' into TTC hell!

Hope everyone else is ok and have more luck. X

@Mummyto1crazy1 I absolutely get that. I felt exactly the same. I was initially so pleased when I got my negative result and then immediately felt so guilty for feeling that way. It is absolutely heartbreaking - it's never easy. As @lamby12 said, I also went through deleting photos etc - I still have a video from my early scan which shows the heartbeat which I don't think I'll ever be able to get rid of, but I'm okay with that. I don't want to ever totally forget my first pregnancy and what I've learned from it. Ultimately I know that my future rainbow baby wouldn't be able to exist without this experience and that's what I'm holding on to x

lamby12 · 15/01/2021 21:34

@Mummyto1crazy1 I totally get that I cried after I got the negative and then threw away the 6 positive tests I still had in the cupboard! Ended up looking at them again, lines still there, seeing them getting darker and remembering how I felt! Had to also delete the photos off my phone that I sent to OH as I keep glancing them in my camera roll. The negative test is like a definitive moment, I hated even buying the tests so much I ordered them on Amazon. I had hoped my days of buying pregnancy tests were over so it was a really awful bit doing the test. I get it!
But all that binning the tests, seeing the negative etc did bring a finality to it and I feel like I've moved on now. Not happy of course but I'm not clinging onto it any more.
X

@RBCoxie thanks for all the info and ur ovulation tests, it's good to use that as a base line, I've only just started testing, just got a negative on a pregnancy test, how awful is it that we have all been wanting a negative so we can try again, it really is heartbreaking how much I really wanted and needed that negative,

@CookieMonster3001 thanks for all the info too, I totally get ur theory and way of thinking, I would see it that way aswell. I thought it was counted from CD1 but just cause I have bleed for 15 days and my norm period is 4-5 days, I just didn't know how to predict ovulation, going to keep tracking and see how it goes,

@lamby12 thank u for all the advice, I was thinking of getting a CBD just to see the negative aswell, just to get the defendant answer, I've been wanting the bleeding to stop and get the negative so badly but didn't think getting it would hit me this hard. It's like a final goodbye to the baby that could have been, it's made me really sad. But also happy that I should be able to try again soon, it really is horrible the emotions isn't it?

lamby12 · 15/01/2021 18:18

@RBCoxie yes I'd take it!

@Mummyto1crazy1 sorry I can't help on this one as I didn't do any opks or pregnancy tests during the bleeding, I just did a pregnancy test when the bleeding stopped and it was negative. I did a CBD which I know has a high threshold but as I'd previously got a positive CBD I preferred just seeing it for sure in words. I suppose if I'd done a FRER it might have been a faint line, but I just took the CBD as my negative. I think you count the first day of bleeding as CD1.

@CookieMonster3001 woo good luck for the TWW, hope you can manage to distract yourself. I think I'm 6dpo today so maybe Monday/Tuesday I could test if no AF. I'm not sure if I will early test yet - I said I wouldn't this month as it could be left over HGC and get my hopes up but since I had a negative test last week I don't think that can happen. I've got these symptoms same as last month so I might do a test so that, if I'm not, I don't get too carried away and end up disappointed. If that makes any sense?!

Afternoon ladies!

So I think I should be 1DPO today. Managed to DTD again last night which is good. Temp hasnt increased much today, but I will probably have a slow rise. The TWW begins! I am gonna try my hardest not to think about it!!

@lamby12 95% success rate? wow.. I am going to pretend I never read that!

@mia2201 welcome! I am so sorry about your loss. I think when it comes to dating, they initially use the first day of your miscarraige/bleeding as cycle day one, and then I have read a lot of people end up having to have early scans which will then date the pregnancy for you. If you dont know when you ovulated, it might also be a bit difficult for you to pinpoint, but from what I have read, the majority of people have only been a couple of days out when they used the first day of bleeding as CD1.

@mummyto1crazy1 I think you should really count first day of bleeding as CD1, but I have a theory, that your cycles would be based on when you first get a negative pregnancy test. When I look back at my cycle, I have ovulated 12 days after getting my first negative test, and I would on a normal cycle, ovulate on CD12. This could be a complete coincidence, so please dont go off what I say, its just what I have found. Having said that, when logging, I still counted day one of bleeding as CD1. Also if you still have pregnancy hormone in your body, you will get a positive OPK as the structure of HCG and LH are almost identical. I would carry on testing until you get a negative and when you do, you should then start testing OPKS.From the looks of your LH chart, it seems as though your LH levels have dropped so keep testing and when it goes back to positive you should be ovulating!

RBCoxie · 15/01/2021 12:44

@Mummyto1crazy1 not sure if this is helpful but these are my ovulation tests that I used. The first one is the first day of my miscarriage - as you can see - very dark! They then got lighter across the next few days as my HCG levels dropped and my last one was when I got a negative pregnancy test. They've since got even lighter and I'm back to my baseline level of LH so now I'm using them to see when I'll get my peak!

TTC after miscarriage
RBCoxie · 15/01/2021 12:28

@lamby12 exactly! I'd much rather take a pregnancy that's not able to be dated for a while. But totally get that everyone is different!

@Mummyto1crazy1 so pleased to hear your bleeding has slowed down! It made me feel so much better when it happened to me! I have counted my first day of bleeding as CD1. One thing to note is that Ovulation tests can also pick up the pregnancy hormone HCG (it is a very similar hormone to the ovulation hormone LH) and therefore your ovulation test may be darker because of the remaining HCG you have left. In fact, I used my ovulation tests at the beginning of my miscarriage to monitor my HCG levels - it was incredibly dark to begin with but got lighter as my HCG levels dropped - when I got down to a lighter ovulation test that's when I did my pregnancy test and got a negative. My suggestion would be to carry on doing your ovulation tests - I'm no doctor but I would imagine they will get lighter over the next few days as your HCG levels drop. Hope this helps you!

Mummyto1crazy1 · 15/01/2021 10:37

I have a question in hoping someone can clear up for me, so I am finally near the end of the bleeding, literally the tiniest bit but only when I wipe, I couldn't resist but do a pregnancy test and an ovulation test, so pregnancy test had a faint line but ovulation had a darker line, so my question is, do u count ur first day of miscarriage as CD1 or the day u stop bleeding as CD1, although my bleeding now is very light it's now been 15days of bleeding, and if on a normal cycle I ovulate day 14, is it possible to ovulate when there is still some blood, I am so confused, I know I just need to wait it out and see how I go, but I'm going nuts here and cant figure it out, xox

@lamby12 Ignore previous post, I'm in the wrong thread!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

eloiseislost · 14/01/2021 19:48

So sorry for your loss @lamby12. I had a similar experience in December, MC at 6 weeks. I bled for about a week and after that, I waited a week and started TTC again. It was the only thing keeping me sane, to know that I'm trying again. I used OPKs and BBT to pinpoint ovulation and I ovulated 17 days after the start of the MC, which is only a couple days later than my usual. I can't tell you what is right to do for you, but in my experience, going back to TTC helped my mental health massively. Whatever you do, take care of yourself and best of luck! 🌈

lamby12 · 14/01/2021 18:47

@mia2201 welcome! I started the thread really to see if anyone else had any thoughts about conceiving immediately after miscarriage, as the information out there is so confusing. It's nice it has turned into such a supportive bunch of ladies!

Sorry for what you've just been through @mia2201. I'm glad you're feeling on the way to recovery.

In terms of dating I don't know exactly how they would date things, but same as you I'd happily wait til the 12 week scan to confirm. As far as I know you take the first day of miscarriage bleeding as day 1 of your cycle, but obviously that varies massively depending on how long you bled for or how long to ovulate, so I think you'd have to take some advice. It would be a nice problem to have though right!!?

And yes if you can afford a private scan that would be a good option. I think they are £60-£80 depending where you go and usually from 6 weeks.

@Mummyto1crazy1 I'm glad things are slowing down now, fingers crossed you're on the way out now. I use flo app so I don't know about the app you mentioned, and in terms of OPK I use CB and only do them on the few days I think I'm ovulating, they are smiley face or blank, so I've never tracked the lines getting darker etc. Sorry I can't help on that!
I've tried a few apps but prefer flo. X

@mia2201 welcome to the group, sorry to hear about ur miscarriage, but just know this group is a great bunch of ladies that know exactly how u feel and can offer advice and kind words, I would suggest asking EPU for an early detection scan, or if u can afford it, book a private one, u can maybe roughly estimate how far along u would be depending on the date u stopped bleeding and trying to work out ovulation, try not to worry they can always figure out dates, it's just a little harder but can be done, I really hope u get ur positive test soon :) xox

Mummyto1crazy1 · 14/01/2021 16:35

@RbCoxie That sounds horrendous having to wait that long, and esp it being such a personal matter, I was struggling to even walk In and out of a&e with the amount of blood, but I'm now glad I got to go home and pass it there, I'm sorry for what u went through, I am so happy to now say my bleeding has slowed down massively, although not completely, I'm just hoping I'm seeing the light at end of tunnel now, last 2 times i thought I was it ended in disaster so I really cant see how there could be anymore to come out, has anyone any advice on the femometer app? I tracked ovulation through them and got a percentage of my levels, I then seen HCG testing strips and the picture showed it displaying percentage, so I ordered them, done one a few days ago before the big bleed and it was a strong line and done one today with the line faint, but it didn't show a percentage?? Should I keep doing them until I get a negative and then start the ovulation ones again? Xox

mia2201 · 14/01/2021 16:07

hello ladies, I'd like to join this thread f that's ok? I have had a MMC a month ago and opted for surgical management that I found pretty straight forward (physically), albeit very sad and unexpected. I took test three weeks after the MVA as advised by a nurse at the hospital, it was all clear. Initially we planned to wait until first period but we didn't in the end and having regular unprotected sex since I stopped bleeding. I have not been tracking ovulation yet, maybe I will if AF arrives in the next couple of weeks which is what should happen if I didn't get pregnant.

I know everyone says it's JUST for dating purposes but how do they go about it? say I got pregnant now and haven't discovered the pregnancy for a couple of weeks. When will my 12 week scan be? And they always worry if the baby looks a fair few days behind or a couple of weeks? I can't get my head round it? I know I might sound like I contadict myself- on one side I sound worried on the other I worry about the dating issues this may cause. I guess my instincts are saying- just keep trying for the rainbow baby! sending baby dust to you all!

lamby12 · 14/01/2021 14:59

@Mummyto1crazy1 I'm glad my message helped in some small way, I really feel for you, I can't imagine how frustrating and tiring it is how long this is going on for you. I hope you're feeling a bit better today?

@RBCoxie yes! Same, if it's between no pregnancy and a pregnancy that they can't date exactly then I'd take the pregnancy any day. It's not like we'll be widely off because we know pretty much when we ovulated and in standard cycles you'd just add on 2 weeks.

@CookieMonster3001 same. I read a study about conception after miscarriage and there was a 95% success rate in the cycle straight after. Which is obviously amazing but just one small random statistic and doesn't mean it's a done deal! I need to try and remain level headed with my expectations.

The last couple of days I've had rib pain which is really specific. I had it in my first pregnancy and I had it last month so I'm trying not to get too hopeful. It could just be aches and pains or something with my cycle. Confused

OP posts:
CookieMonster3001 · 14/01/2021 11:30

@lamby12 I know what you mean about getting our hopes up! I find myself reading positive stories after miscarriage thread of all these people who have conceived straight after a miscarriage and I need to stop because I know its just going to end up leading to disappointment, so trying to get into my head that its probably not gonna happen this month because my cycle has been all over the place and just wait for AF to arrive.

I should be in my TWW as of tomorrow (hopefully my BBT will rise tomorrow to confirm) but I defo think I have ovulated this morning as I had such intense cramping last night and today it seems to have eased off. Me and hubby DTD last night, and might give it one more go today just incase, then I just want to forget about it for one month!

RBCoxie · 14/01/2021 08:39

@CookieMonster3001 @lamby12 both of your messages were really helpful and actually put my mind at rest about trying again - thank you so much. I totally agree, everything I've found is just about dating and tbh if I have to go the first 12 weeks of not knowing when my due date will be then so be it! They'll do a dating scan at 12 weeks anyway!

Great news on your peak too CookieMonster!! This is so exciting! Keeping everything crossed for you! I had my first morning of no blood today so I'm keeping everything crossed that this is it now and it's over 🤞🏼 Now it's about waiting for that peak!

@Hopefulmummie congratulations! It's so lovely to hear some positive news. I hope you're the first of many on this group to get their rainbow babies!

@Mummyto1crazy1 I am so, so sorry to hear what you are going through. It sounds like the most awful experience. I also experienced A&E during my miscarriage so know how awful it is during COVID - an ambulance took me there at 3am and I was in the 'queue' on a bed for 5 hours which is where I passed everything. I know it's easier said than done, but don't feel any pressure to think about trying again - you have been through a lot, physically and emotionally, and it's totally normal to need some time to get your head around it, recover physically and then the way forward may seem slightly clearer.

Mummyto1crazy1 · 13/01/2021 22:29

@lamby12 u couldn't have said it better and honestly reading ur message was comforting, thank u for that, it really has been an awful few weeks and am so looking forward for the bleeding to stop and my body get back to normal, I'm now petrified to start trying again, I couldn't go through this again, I keep just telling myself that every woman that goes through a loss is going through unbearable times no matter how long the process takes its extremely awful for us all, and it's in the times of covid that made my experience of a&e the way it was. I also have a great support network around me that have been amazing.. I totally feel the TWW is awful, u try to distract yourself but it's always on ur mind no matter what, it's hard to keep a level head and be optimistic when its something u want so bad. I really hope it happens for u this month but if not don't give up hope because the first few months after u are just as fertile, but I totally get how ur feeling, its torture xox
