Trying to conceive baby No 1 over 40

October1979 · 13/10/2020 16:07

I am 40 nearly 41 and ttc baby no1. I fell pregnant for the first time in December but suffered a missed miscarriage at 8 1/2 weeks in February. I've been trying ever since with no luck. I use Clearblue advanced fertility monitor. Take vitamin B, C and Co Q10 as well as pre conception tablets daily. Until lockdown I did weekly acupuncture. I guess I'm feeling low as af turned up today and I turn 41 very soon.

I am usually positive and hopeful. Trying to think what's for me won't go past me...

Looking for some buddies in the same boat or some over 40s who conceived naturally to give me hope and share their secret to success.

I’m sorry to hear that @sabtom I’ve heard great things about acupuncture though so fingers crossed it works.

All ok here thanks. I’m cd7 and got everything crossed I ovulate a bit earlier this time. I’ve just started Bud Fertility supplement which has Maca in. I’m hoping this might help regulate my cycles. Feeling a bit shell shocked as I had a really bad reaction to the Astra Zeneca Vaccine. I was ill for a few days. Hoping this hasn’t affected my cycle in any way.

Really hoping we get done bfps on this thread soon! Xx

Hi all! Just checking in to see how everyone's doing? It's 12/13dpo for me today, took a frer earlier- BFN ah well Sad Gunna try some fertility acupuncture in a couple of weeks. Acupuncturist suggested trying a session once a week to see how it goes, at the moment I think I'm willing to try anything now! Lol Hopefully we're gunna have enough saved up to go for IVF in the summer if nothing's happening between now and then Smile

Marvellouslymadmum · 22/03/2021 09:58

@soontobeamama good plan! I believe they'll only prescribe progesterone once you are pregnant to try and help it stick as your levels need to be high to maintain the pregnancy, so what they would prob do it get you in for blood tests ASAP once you have a bfp and then prescribe if it's low

soontobeamama · 22/03/2021 08:12

Morning!

Well, I've decided I need to be a bit more proactive as what I've been doing isn't working and time is of the essence!

I bought pomegranate juice as well as 2 pineapples yesterday following your suggestion @marvellouslymadmum! I've also ordered vitamin E and ubiquinol to add to the cocktail of supplements I'm already taking. I'm going to ring the doctor today to ask about progesterone as a few people have suggested their GP has prescribed it to them - I'm at the stage now where I'm willing to try anything that may help.

Marvellouslymadmum · 19/03/2021 21:54

@soontobeamama thank you! Hopefully it'll work for you too!

soontobeamama · 19/03/2021 21:04

@marvellouslymadmum - thanks so much for all the suggestions, some great tips that I've not heard of so will give them a go! I will definitely ask about progesterone as well. Wishing you lots of luck that it works for you too xx

Marvellouslymadmum · 19/03/2021 19:55

@soontobeamama I would definitely get your day 21 test if they haven't done it already to see what your progesterone levels are as they could definitely give you progesterone if needed to stay pregnant. Unexplained infertility is a nightmare! You could also try vitamin e, maca root and ubiquinol which are all good for fertility and egg health. Drink pomegranate juice up to ovulation time and eat fresh pineapple including the core through the fw. All things I'm also doing, I'm 42 in a week so not much different age wise and have had two mc and two cp. I would say if it's keeping the pregnancies going there are definitely other investigations they could do and progesterone is a definite option so try and talk to a gp again, maybe a different one at your surgery?

soontobeamama · 19/03/2021 18:31

@Marvellouslymadmum

Thank you x

They have said that we just need to keep trying. Due to my age, they took bloods etc after my second miscarriage. They indicated that IVF won't work as we don't have an issue getting pregnant, just staying pregnant. I don't know if there is anything more they can do for me (I would be too old for IVF on the NHS anyway and would need to go private).

I have noticed that a few ladies have said that asking GP's for progesterone might help, so I don't know if I should try that? I have been taking trying to conceive vitamins (and my husband has also been taking the ones for men) as well as magnesium, Vitamins C, D, B6, B12, etc, cut down on caffeine and alcohol, improved diet, upped exercise and try to relax more.

I really thought and prayed my last pregnancy was third time lucky, but it wasn't meant to be and I miscarried the day before I was scheduled to get my early scan x

Marvellouslymadmum · 19/03/2021 17:08

@soontobeamama hi, sorry for your losses. Have they said they won't do any more investigations or anything? It's so confusing when you don't know why isn't it! We are all in that geriatric catagory unfortunately lol

soontobeamama · 19/03/2021 16:22

Hi, I'm so sorry for your loss - I wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
I'm 43 and I am still hopeful that I will have a baby. Sadly I have had 3 miscarriages within the last 15 months - first at 9 1/2 weeks, followed by 7 1/2 and then at 8 weeks. I have had tests which indicate that my eggs are still viable and are actually better than expected for a woman of my age - "geriatric mother" and I was also told I do not have any genetic reason for the losses. I have been advised to keep trying but I am very conscious time is not on my side and I'm devastated each month it doesn't happen for us. Sending lots of luck to you that you fall pregnant soon and you have a healthy pregnancy x

Catconfusion · 19/03/2021 06:26

Thanks ladies, I have my appointment booked for this afternoon. I think I’ll just get the first dose and see what happens and speak to the midwife if I get pregnant before the second dose. I have no underlying issues so our local vaccine centre has done well to get to the general population of 40 year olds. Xx

Marvellouslymadmum · 18/03/2021 17:40

@sabtom that's exactly what they said to me as I have severe brittle Asthma.

sabtom · 18/03/2021 16:38

I've had my first dose, I did let them know I was trying but they said it was still fine to to take. I'm type 1 diabetic, so the risks of complications from Covid would've been worse for me.

Marvellouslymadmum · 18/03/2021 11:31

@Catconfusion I've had my first one, was thinking maybe I'd wait IF I was lucky enough though that's highly unlikely, but after looking at all the stats etc I think it's riskier to get Covid than the vaccine so if talk to midwives etc and go from there

Catconfusion · 18/03/2021 11:09

I was just wondering if anyone on here has had their Covid vaccine? I’ve been offered mine but not sure what to do if I fall pregnant after the first dose. Even though the stats are good I’m not sure Id feel comfortable with a history of miscarriage to have the second dose while pregnant, especially first trimester. Xx

Catconfusion · 18/03/2021 11:07

@sabtom fingers crossed for you! X

sabtom · 17/03/2021 18:32

Ohh if that's the case @Catconfusion I'm due a BFP Smile it took just over a year to get my first BFP and it's coming up to 2 years trying soon 🤞🏻

Catconfusion · 17/03/2021 11:35

@Geriatric1234 yes definitely my take. If there are no underlying issues and it’s just age that’s the concern, most couples will conceive in12 months. Age wasn’t seen as significant in this study. It didn’t seem to look at the pregnancy outcomes though so we don’t know if the pregnancies progressed normally. However it’s definitely reassuring. Xx

Geriatric1234 · 17/03/2021 11:03

@Catconfusion that’s such a great and positive study (quite a read!). If I’m reading correctly, it suggests most “truly fertile” couples of any age are likely to conceive a successful pregnancy within 12 months. Was that your interpretation too? (I had to skim a bit!)

Catconfusion · 14/03/2021 08:49

@October1979 someone just sent me this study. It’s really encouraging!

academic.oup.com/humrep/article/18/9/1959/708200

I hope you’re ok today! Xx

Catconfusion · 13/03/2021 13:16

This is it @October1979 I know someone a bit younger who got bad news due to extremely low AMH and they went on to conceive naturally. The test results definitely bode well.

Did they advise you about any supplements you could take? I’m going to try and new supplement and not sure what to go for. I might start coq10 again and maybe the Bud supplement.

October1979 · 13/03/2021 11:39

I hope so @Catconfusion the positives are that we both have no issues

Catconfusion · 13/03/2021 11:30

@October1979 exactly! 2 pregnancies out of 12 cycles. More like 20% conception rate. Also you had that horrendous mmc to recover from which may have impacted chances for a bit.

I was reading that 50% of couples ttc in their early to mid 40s are successful. I think your chances are far better than the doctor has said. Xx

October1979 · 13/03/2021 11:11

Thanks @Catconfusion I agree that the stats seem dire. Also I've had 2 pregnancies in a year. Even if they did end in miscarriage seems odd with the 1%
