Im not 'desperate' for a girl, but I know I dont want anymore after 3, so a girl would be nice.

Im going to TTC after christmas.

Im on the pill - should I stop it now??

But bearing in mind Im getting married in December and DEFINATLY do not want to be PG then!!

Oooooh excited !!!

And meant to say - start taking your folic acid now definitely. And any vitamin supps if you're into that kind of thing. Good to have a run-up to it!

Rubineski · 12/10/2007 22:35

Hey, I'm looking to try from end of January, and was thinking of going for a girl this time - so I'll race you!!!

My neighbour had two boys and then did 'the book' and swears by it - and now has a little girl.

I've got a four year old boy. When I was pregnant we were convinced I was going to have a girl. Everyone who saw the shape of me agreed. And, every now and then, we'd joke and say: 'You know what, we'll end up with a red haired boy!'

and we did!

so make a wish too, just for luck.

Yes, apparently all those stored-up eggs come pinging out like one of those machines that throw tennis balls out for practice.

emkana · 12/10/2007 21:58

Can't help on the boy/girl thing, but I was told by a gynecologist that you should not stop the pill a few months before you conceive, in fact you are most likely to conceive immediately after stopping the pill. And I do know several women for whom this is true.

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 12/10/2007 21:56

According to the timing theories all my boys should have been girls.

LoveMyGirls · 12/10/2007 21:45

The sex of the baby is due to the man so don't think anything you do will make much if any difference.

Good Luck anyway and have fun trying!

Heated · 12/10/2007 21:35

Not taking the theories seriously I tried timing when/how often we had sex, and slightly altering diet just to see if it would have any effect on the outcome. I thought it might be nice to have a boy first and then a girl which is exactly what happened but do I really believe it had anything to do with the outcome?

Most popular methods

TIMING OF SEX

What's the theory?
Male sperm are lighter in weight and swim faster than female ones so are more likely to reach the egg. Having sex on the day of ovulation should increase the chances of conceiving a boy.
Female sperm are heavier and live longer so having sex a few days before ovulation and then abstaining (while the male sperm die) should increase the chances of conceiving a girl.

Dr Landrum Shettles developed this theory in the US in the 1960s. It's complemented by the Billings' Method, which is about timing sex around the consistency of vaginal mucus (when it's thin and clear for boys, thicker and sticker for girls). Couples using this method tend to have boys more than girls.

What's the success rate?
Advocates claim 75% but there's only a tiny amount of medical evidence in the UK to support it.
Confusingly, another theory exists based on observations that couples that didn't live together before conceiving had more girls. They were thought to be less likely to have sex at the time of ovulation, backing up the idea that conceiving four or five days before ovulation was more likely to produce a boy.

SEXUAL POSITION

What's the theory?
Male sperm are more vulnerable and the vagina becomes less acidic closer to the cervix. So if penetration is deep (woman-on-top or man-behind positions), the male sperm will enter a more alkaline environment and are more likely to survive the short journey.
Shallow penetration should favour your chances of conceiving a girl: the slower female sperm are hardy enough to withstand the acidic conditions at the entrance to the vagina so could make it through to the egg after the male sperm have died off.

What's the success rate?
Not high, since the theory fails to take into account that the difference in lifespan between male and female sperm is a matter of days, not minutes.
Medical sceptics say that force of ejaculation and physics of sexual position don't play a part in getting the sperm to their destination more quickly ? that's determined by the chemistry of cervical mucus.

MALE SEXUAL ABSTINENCE

What's the theory?
Abstaining for a few days before making love increases your chances of conceiving a boy. The greater the volume of sperm, the more male sperm should be present, so theoretically there's a greater chance that a male sperm survives and fertilises the egg before a female sperm can reach it.

What's the success rate?
Not high. Sceptics say that with more sperm, the chances of you getting pregnant may be higher, but there's no gender factor.

CHANGING YOUR DIET

What's the theory?
The minerals in your diet could affect your metabolism and the environment of your eggs.

  • To improve conditions for male sperm you need potassium (in meat, bananas, apricots and celery).
  • To improve conditions for female sperm you need more magnesium-rich food (in nuts, soya beans and leafy green vegetables).

What's the success rate?
There's no scientific data on humans to support the potassium or magnesium theories, although experts say diet does seem to play some part in gender selection.
Historical events have shown that famine can result in more boys being born but also that women weighing less than 54.5 kilos are more likely to have girls. This could mean that the type of food and nutrients available to those people played a part, or that calorie intake has an effect - but a low-calorie diet has a very different effect to malnutrition.

TIMING OF ORGASM

What's the theory?
If you reach orgasm before your partner, your vagina becomes more alkaline, which creates a better environment for male sperm. Female sperm survive better in the naturally acidic environment of your vagina, so climaxing first would favour the conception of boys.

What's the success rate?
Little. Prolonged foreplay has the same effect of increasing vaginal secretions, which could be just as effective at reducing its acidity ? but no one has suggested female foreplay as a method for conceiving boys.

DOUCHING

What's the theory?
Male sperm favour alkaline conditions, so douching (flooding the vagina via a syringe) with a dilute alkaline solution, such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) before intercourse increases the chances of conceiving a boy.

What's the success rate?
There's a very small amount of medical evidence that backs up this theory, but some experts warn women against putting sodium bicarbonate into their vagina because they may not know how diluted to make it, and in any case, the acid in the vagina is there for necessary protection against infections like thrush.

Hi

I read an article in the Daily Mail, cut it out and purchased the book below from Amazon and done a lot of what the lady advises ... set up a chart, take my temperature each day ... record all of the following on the chart, periods, ovulation, sex etc ...

The author says before ovulation for a girl and on or after for a boy, she also gives you a list of what to eat for a girl and boy ... you should purchase it and read it, it doesnt cost that much < £5.00

The Sex of Your Baby: The Natural Way by Hazel Phillips and Hazel Chesterman-Phillips (Paperback - 8 Jan 1998).

All of my friends x 5 including myself all bought the miriam stoppard pregnancy books and all counted the days that on average the medical people say we ovulate and every single one of us (all first time mothers came out with girls - me including!) two of my friends who got caught who werent trying got boys!

I have only learnt through purchasing this book that everyone ovulates at different times and everyones cycles are different and you can only check this by charting it and taking it from there.

Good luck! I am in month 3 of trying now so I hope I am pregnant soon and my hubby and I would very much like a boy.

Good Luck

kitsandbits · 04/10/2007 12:40

In the snow?? lol Brrr

I wasnt going to have another for a while - but Im figuring get it all out of the way now! Whats the point in waiting till everythings settled - kids being older and a bit independant to start right back at the beginning again??

Ohhh im really excited

Is it worth charting now - if I do stop the pill? To try and figure out my cycle before TTC?

OP posts:
lomondgal · 04/10/2007 12:33

I agree you should stop the pill to try and get back into a regular cycle, (obv use other contraceptive till dec!)

www.bbc.co.uk/health/ask_the_doctor/pregnancysexselection.shtml so according to this have sex in the snow early in your cycle lol.

try having a look at this and good luck! xx

Nbg · 04/10/2007 12:30

If you get that Contours pushchair I will be most grieved

Good luck!

Lulumama · 04/10/2007 12:29

ye gods ! imagine the pushchairs you can buy !

i thought you said you weren;t having any more >?!

try TTC around days 11/12 , as girl sperms are slower but stronger, than boy sperms which are faster but weaker. therefore more chance of boy sperms dying off before hte egg is released around day 14

that is the theory. i reckon it is not that foolproof

definitely stop the pill now though

goingfor3 · 04/10/2007 12:26

Stop taking your pill now to let your body get back to a normal cycle.
