Advice for Women That Have Come off the Pill - Share your Experience :)

Hi all,

I came off the pill two months ago, and after having a completely haywire 2nd post-pill cycle, I've been doing a lot of research to try and understand what's going on.

I thought it would be nice to share my research and what I believe is happening to me, in hope it might help others. I also thought you might like to share your experience and how you found/are finding coming off the pill, as being able to read that other people experience similar can be really comforting. So here's me...

I'm 31 and TTC DC1.
I came off the pill early April, had my withdrawal bleed a few days later, then first natural AF came 30 days later, so a 30 day cycle. First AF was very light and started and finished with brown spotting. Only lasted 4 days.

I'm now in cycle2 currently on CD37. I didn't ovulate until CD33! The day after ovulation, my boobs and nipples were agony. I'm now 3DPO and the pain is worse.

I recalled this pain the last cycle too, which I wasn't tracking. I assumed it was a sign AF was coming, as it arrived 5 days later. But from this cycle I now know it's actually a sign I've ovulated, so this would mean an extremely short luteal phase on that first cycle.

My research has included reading 'Taking Charge of your Fertility'.
I also found this article extremely helpful in understanding what goes on in your body when you stop the pill, as well as learning things you can do to take charge of your cycle again: avivaromm.com/post-pill-reset/

My sore boobs and possible short luteal phase points to an oestrogen dominance, which causes low progesterone.

This sums up why this happens:

'While not a symptom in itself, nutritional deficiencies can cause a host of symptoms – including hormonal imbalances. They are also a problem for women who come off the pill hoping to get pregnant right away because low nutrient status has been associated with fertility problems, and low nutrients in mom can also mean low nutrients in baby. The pill has been associated with robbing a number of nutrients including B vitamins and magnesium.

Hormonal birth control pills can deplete the body’s stores of certain nutrients, including vitamins B2, B6, and B12; vitamins C and E; magnesium, selenium, zinc, and folate. Vitamin D levels may also drop after coming off the pill.'

Understanding what is going on with my body right now has made me feel so much better. If I were to have a normal luteal phase this cycle, I'd be on track to have a 48 day cycle! The sore boobs tell me I'm probably going to have a short luteal phase though.

I've also learnt how hormones control the whole cycle. With oestrogen being the important hormone during the first half. It builds up and when it reaches a certain threshold it triggers the LH surge. Once you've ovulated, then progesterone kicks in. This cycle I had three LH surges in total spaced 12 days apart until I finally ovulated. Oestrogen and Progesterone have to be perfectly balanced, and so I think the three LH surges could indicate that my oestrogen kept building up over and over until my body finally managed to ovulate, causing an oestrogen dominance. I finally confirmed ovulation after three high temps.

As of a few days ago, I'm following some of the steps in the article I linked, by taking a prenatal multivitamin to replace depleted nutrients. I already take probiotics, vitamin D and folic acid, so will continue with those and will add in vitamin C too. I've cut out low fat dairy instead choosing full fat, and am trying to focus on eating at least 2 pieces of fruit a day and extra veg with my lunch and dinner. I may also look into including a b6 supplement for my luteal phase next cycle if it does turn out to be short again this cycle, as this helps with progesterone and during the luteal phase progesterone spikes to dry up cervical fluid, change the cervix position, stop anymore eggs from being released and build up the lining, so is really crucial.

Hopefully this will help someone :) would love to hear how others are finding coming off the pill x

Sorry to hear about the temp drop and hopefully AF arrives soon so you can start a new cycle and then that’s another cycle down where your body is adjusting. It’s still very early days for you since coming off the pill 😊

Ooh that’s a tricky one, it could just be a bad sleep and where you’re thinking about the different reactions it’s keeping you awake. I’m not a great sleeper at the best of times so I would find that really hard to know whether it was a reaction or just me having a bad sleep. Do you usually sleep ok? If you think it’s a reaction, leave today and see how you go tonight and then at least you know.

I’m good thank you, I had quite a bad headache yesterday evening which went with painkillers but I’m wondering is that a side effect of coming of the pill?

@TheDaydreamBelievers I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling a little deflated. It’s totally understandable and I love your list of things to refocus on and looking at the positive steps you can take.
Your holiday sounds lovely, hiking is a lovely way to spend your time off. We usually go to Wales with a group of friends over the August BH and do walking/site seeing, it’s so beautiful and an amazing way to relax. xx

TheDaydreamBelievers · 22/07/2020 12:35

I'm really glad you have your wedding arranged @MintGreenLife - where are you honeymooning? Our holiday is north west highlands, nice and wild and remote!

I'm with you on the no alcohol - havent had any since March, with the exception of a glass of wine with my MIL last Saturday (part of the 'screw this'll mood). Luckily I was never a big drinker so it doesnt really impact me. I'm also trying to have sugary things only a couple of times a week Cake.

Just used my last OPK and stick pregnancy test and they are both proper stark white, haha. Have to laugh or I'd cry! Grin

MintGreenLife · 22/07/2020 12:25

@TheDaydreamBelievers I can completely understand why you'd end up feeling that way, so don't beat yourself up about it. Sometimes we need a bit of time to mope to enable us to reflect and manage to look at difficult things in a more positive way.

That sounds like a great plan! At the mo I'm trying to do similar in that I'm eating well and have cut out sugar, alcohol and caffeine, and am trying to do some sort out workout every week day, and DTD every 2-3 days. I've been doing this pretty consistently for 6 weeks now though and do feel like 'what's the point' sometimes. Will all be worth it in the long run though as everything we can do to move things along will surely help!

Oh lovely :) I think the only thing keeping me sane is that we are officially getting married (with just 10 guests) early September and have a honeymoon to Scotland booked. Think it's important to have things to look forward to x

TheDaydreamBelievers · 22/07/2020 12:20

Yeah @MintGreenLife, I do feel frustrated and a bit fed up which has daftly led me to be a bit like 'screw it all' - eating more junk and BD less. I got really down about it a couple of weeks ago and stopped using OPKs. Also havent done the BD that much the last few weeks through feeling this way and also work knackeredness.

I think I need to refocus and focus on positive steps I can take:
Reducing my BMI through healthy eating (currently 28).
Keep exercising (running and weights).
Do some mindfulness.
Have more sex with my lovely husband.
Keep temping.
Order some more OPKs and use them when I feel ready to again.

We have a wee holiday in a few weeks which will be lots of hiking and other outdoor pursuits so hopefully that helps.

MintGreenLife · 22/07/2020 12:12

@TheDaydreamBelievers that's so frustrating! So sorry, we spoke about your test results before but for some reason I thought you were having some followup tests. I'm now CD36 and I know I haven't ovulated yet, I've come to the conclusion I'm not ovulating since coming off the pill, which makes TTC fairly pointless but you never know. I'm frustrated after just 36 days of not much happening, so I can't imagine how you must be feeling. Really hope you get seen with gynaecology and that they don't fob you off x

OP posts:
TheDaydreamBelievers · 22/07/2020 12:08

Hey all! Thanks for checking in on me

@francis05 - on one hand I must admit it's really nice to hear that someone has had similar experiences. But I'm sorry for all that had happened to you, and I feel the same that I am so concerned there is something underlying that no one is looking at.

@MintGreenLife - CD126 and nadda! They've done bloods for hormones and androgens and say they are normal, although Google tells me that may not be 100% true (testosterone on borderline of high and prolactin is high). Theyve referred to gynaecology but that'll take a while and I may well be rejected as it hasn't been 6mo.

MintGreenLife · 22/07/2020 12:02

@TheDaydreamBelievers How are you getting on? Have you had any more rest results back x

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 22/07/2020 09:13

@Flowerkm yeah you're totally right. Maybe I'll just keep the five I have left and won't order any more, then I can use the ones I have left when I see EWCM.

I don't tell my OH when I think I'm ovulating as I think it freaks him out as he feels like he has to 'perform' rather than just doing it for the fun of it ha. Yeah I'm the same - I mostly don't talk to him about TTC stuff, apart from occasionally when I'm feeling frustrated that my body isn't doing what it's meant to be doing!

No temp rise for me today like I hoped, in fact it dropped down lower than the previous 7 days of temps. I'm fairly certain I'm not going to ovulate this cycle, so kind of just want AF to come now!

I had a pretty bad nights sleep, and one of the possible 'reactions' to the detox is disrupted sleep. It's hard to know though whether I just had a bad night...or if it was the detox. Like I said before, you're meant to stop for a day or two when you have a reaction and then start from the beginning again, so not sure whether to leave it today, see how I sleep tonight, and if OK start again tomorrow. Slightly concerned I'm reacting already and that it may take ages if I keep having to stop-start, but for all I know that was nothing to do with why I slept badly.

How are you today? xx

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 22/07/2020 08:15

@MintGreenLife Don't get stressed over them, go by your body as it's so easy to miss high surges/peaks.
My OH said the same about the pressure, he told me that if I just say 'I'm ready' he'll understand, he said he feels pressure as he knows that's the chance to fall pregnant. I never thought of it from his view before but i understand. He's happy to listen but I just don't think he want's me mentioning it as we're getting ready to DTD because of the pressure of it all.

I think I would be the same, the thought of not doing them would make me wonder more? Maybe you could give them a miss for a week or two and let the detox settle into your system, see how you feel and then maybe start doing them but take them with a pinch of salt and go by what your body is doing as well. I guess if you think your body is producing the LH hormone you could always take one to back up what you're seeing as well. Do what makes you feel most happy, you don't want to be consumed over what a stick says when you can see/feel your body doing other things :) xx

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 21:08

@Flowerkm I guess if you start finding them stressful then there's probably not much point is there! Think the only way they are helpful is if you plan to DTD every night in the run up to ovulation - I tried that around when I was getting positive OPKs last cycle, which was more than once, and it was too much for my OH 😂 Think he felt the pressure! So we are probably better going for every other day anyway. I was planning on ordering more OPKs, but maybe I'll give it a miss for a bit and see how I feel. I guess the only reason why I would continue with them is to try and see if my LH levels appear more normal while/after doing this detox. Now I'm typing this I'm thinking maybe I'm not ready to stop them 😂

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 21/07/2020 21:02

@MintGreenLife Oooh I see, that makes sense. Fingers crossed you don’t get many side affects and can get through them all quickly.
Ive just seen your other post and i totally agree with your comment on the OPKs, i found myself getting all worked up over my peak and when the egg was likely to be released or if it really was released but then I thought it actually doesn’t matter, as long as you’re DTD regularly, every other day or whatnot then thats all that matters and as long as you know your signs ☺️

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 20:04

@francis05 I'm starting to think I should give up on OPKs too: I've used almost 30 this cycle so far, and it's so hard not to feel disappointed every time you get a faint line instead of a dark line 😔 I'm temping too, so maybe at some point I'll just focus on that and my own physical signs like cervix position and CM etc. When you know what you're looking for and you're DTD everyother day anyway then I guess OPKs aren't even that helpful x

OP posts:
MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 20:02

@Flowerkm tomorrow's temp will be telling! Totally going to be disappointed if it doesn't go up 🙈 I'm not holding my breath.

They didn't taste of anything to be honest. They are honestly the teeniest pills and I disolved it in half a glass of water. The way it works is if you get a reaction (headache or PMS symptoms) you stop for a few days and then start again. No reaction to the first one so that's good. Every 7 days you move into the next potency which is stronger, fingers crossed I don't get many reactions and then I won't have to stop start, and then will get through it in a month, rather than it taking linger x

Thank for the lovely welcome!!

@MinGreenLife definitely sounds like sore nipples could be one of your ovulation symptoms. I'm at the stage where I'm just happy to ges any kind of symptom/cramp etc as it hopefully means something is trying to work. I had really sore boobs last Monday and was convinced something was happening. I've given up on OPKs though, found that they were consuming my life and were never getting any darker, also think I was making myself dehydrated so my wee was more diluted... Just started taking temping more serious under my reflexologists orders, huge temp drop this morning!

Flowerkm · 21/07/2020 19:29

@MintGreenLife You really may have missed it. It will be interesting to see when your AF arrives but thats like what happened to me, within 12 hours mine had gotten fainter. I wouldnt rule it out for you :)
Ooh exiting. Glad you started. How do they taste?

Welcome @francis05 Smile sorry to hear about your miscarriage ThanksI really hope things settle down soon for you, it does sound like a rough journey so far. Please keep updated, its really nice to have people to talk to about this xx

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 18:49

@francis05 lovely to have you here. Sorry to hear about your experience since coming off the pill, it certainly sounds like you've had it pretty rocky! Hope you manage to get back on track soon and that it doesn't take you too long to catch again. That's interesting you say about sore nipples, as I've been worried I'm not ovulating - my last cycle I didn't get a positive OPK until CD33, and then my temp only went just above the coverline for 3/4 days before dropping and AF came, but in my first cycle and second cycle off the pill I had super sensitive/sore nipples about 5 days before AF came, so maybe I have been ovulating and then just having a crazy short luteal phase. I'm on CD35 now and had my darkest OPK so far this cycle today plus the most EWCM I've had since coming off, but tested again this afternoon and line on OPK was fainter again. Will be interesting to see if my temp goes up/if I get sore nipples again in the next few days x

Hi Ladies, just found this thread and it's so refreshing to read about others going through the same as me!!
@TheDaydreambeliever we seem to quite similar... I came off Ridgevidon in Sept 19 (after 7 years) and had an over 100 day cycle, I then luckily fell Pregnant around New Year, only tested as I was doing so every 2 weeks since Nov however looking back I did have sore nipples from Ovulation.
Unfortunately that ended in a missed miscarriage picked up at 9 weeks, I then had to have medical management & surgery to remove the pregnancy as my body didn't do this naturally. I'm now on CD120 since I had surgery and nothing!
Had blood tests a few weeks ago but came back normal, my doctor has not been very helpful and has just said your body is taking it's time getting back to normal as it's been through a lot... Which I understand but doesn't stop me worrying that there is an underlying issue.

I've just started reflexology as read that that can balance hormones, have been told to stop running/any excessive exercise and eat wholefoods etc.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! X

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 16:28

@Flowerkm I tested again this afternoon around 3ish and line had gotten fainter again! It was a bit darker than usual yesterday morning, but I only tested once, so a whole 24 hours since my last test when I got the almost positive today, so maybe it was yesterday and I missed it. Will be interesting to see what my temp does tomorrow. I forgot to check my cervix yesterday too, so can't be sure of when it went back down again.

My remedies came so I'm just doing the first one now - you have to dissolve the tablets in water and sip slowly for an hour. Apparently you can see erratic temps from the remedy also, so part of me wondered if I should have left it until tomorrow to start, but then I just decided to crack on! I've been checking my cervix for a couple of months now, so think I can tell the difference between low and high etc, yet to feel it go soft though, which is what's meant to happen during fertile window. Who knows! Brilliant you caught your peak with OPKs this cycle, my readings have been all over the place so I'm not having much luck with OPKs so far x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 21/07/2020 16:21

@MintGreenLife ah thats amazing news! An almost positive is a really good sign, you might get your peak soon. Mine went high on Friday night, Saturday morning i had sooo much EWCM, i was shocked as not used to it 🙈 then i got my peak but by Saturday night it had gone down to high again so i almost missed it. It all happened very quick. Im still learning the whole cervix thing but I think Im getting there with that!
It might be, but its also a good sign that your body is knowing when AF is coming and also producing those hormones. I don't think you're far off tbh ☺️

@CharWils i use Femometer app and also have the strips from Amazon that go with it and can measure the % from the strip onto app. I think you can also buy a themonitor that goes with the app as well. Deffo have a look around, this is only my first month doing it so might even have a look at the Premom as haven't really played around with many apps. Xx

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 14:36

@CharWils I use Premom as it charts your LH levels and temp on the same chart. I also have Fertility Friend but not a fan of that one. Not sure about the other. Premom is my fav so far ☺️

OP posts:
CharWils · 21/07/2020 12:57

What app do you all use? Obviously I have no previous knowledge of cycle or length, dates etc to track currently so one that is good for this and allows tracking of temp and OPKs?

I have flo and fertility friend - are there better ones for this situation?

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 12:42

@Flowerkm it's good that many of us have been able to turn what's been an awful situation into a positive ☺️ Last I checked I think my BMI is between 21-22, so bang in the middle, like you I feel like I should do all I can to make sure I'm as healthy as possible, without making myself miserable of course!

Hope AF comes on time for you 🤞🏼 Sorry if TMI, but I had the most EWCM I've ever had this morning and an almost positive on an OPK. But then my cervix has been high for over a week and has come back down again, so that makes no sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ Will keep testing, but I think some women get a small LH surge and what resembles EWCM before AF so meh be that x

OP posts:
Flowerkm · 21/07/2020 12:05

@MintGreenLife Thats really nice to hear that Covid has made you take that leap, its funny when we’re put into these situations we just see a different view of it all. Well done on the lack of choccy, thats really motivated me to not reach for that choccy bar now! Im a healthy BMI but i think i do need to make sure Im eating everything needed to grow a healthy baba when it happens.
Yay! Hope they arrive today. Im excited for you, really hope this helps ☺️

Im good today thank you. Works a bit quiet but can’t complain. All my cramps have totally stopped which is good, just a count down to AF now. Think Im due on the 2nd or 3rd August. How are you? Xx

CharWils · 21/07/2020 11:03

Thanks so much @MintGreenLife

So happy I found this thread as good to know there's a group of us and that I'm not alone in initially feeling so uneducated about the affects of being on it!

MintGreenLife · 21/07/2020 10:02

Hi @CharWils and welcome :)

I've just requoted these stats I found above, but a study I found stated that 60% of women will go back to normal after stopping the pill and start ovulating within 2-4 weeks, and then 40% have cycle disturbances up to 9 months after stopping, so you never know, you could be one of those women that get straight back to normal :) unfortunately it's just a wait and see situation, but you could get straight back on track!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things :) I'm honestly a bit stumped as to why my body is having a hard time, but I don't think there's much reason behind it. When you think about it in my case I have stopped ovulation for 13/14 years, so of course it's going to take a little while to get back into the swing of things!

Like @Flowerkm said, of course no judgement here. We all have different backgrounds and it's just so nice that we can all find common ground in this, makes me feel much better knowing there are others going through the same thing! x
